Cascaded PI controller Tuning for Power Plant Superheated Steam Temperature based on Multi-Objective Optimization

To improve the superheated steam temperature (SST) control performance, this paper considers the conflicting objectives in SST control, multi-objective optimization (MOO) algorithm is employed in this paper. Firstly, the inner-loop PI controller is optimized by considering the objectives of set-point tracking and disturbance rejection, with and without constraints on robustness level. It is found that robustness constraint is essential in the optimization. Secondly, the regulation performance of the outer-loop PI controller is addressed by optimizing the disturbance rejection and robustness simultaneously. The parameter are determined based on the simulation comparison between the non-dominated solutions. The simulation results demonstrate a promising prospect of promoting the proposed strategy to more industrial practices. © 2017

This paper is concerned with developing a novel distributed Kalman filtering algorithm over wireless sensor networks based on randomized consensus strategy. Compared with centralized algorithm, distributed filtering techniques require less computation per sensor and lead to more robust estimation since they simply use the information from the neighboring nodes in the network. However, poor local sensor estimation caused by limited observability and network topology changes which interfere the global consensus are challenging issues. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel randomized gossip based distributed Kalman filtering algorithm. Information exchange and computation in the proposed algorithm can be carried out in an arbitrarily connected network of nodes. In addition, the computational burden can be distributed for a sensor which communicates with a stochastically selected neighbor at each clock step under schemes of gossip algorithm. In this case, the error covariance matrix changes stochastically at every clock step, thus the convergence is considered in a probabilistic sense. We provide the mean square convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm. Under a sufficient condition, we show that the proposed algorithm is quite appealing as it achieves better mean square error performance theoretically than the noncooperative decentralized Kalman filtering algorithm. Besides, considering the limited computation, communication and energy resources in the wireless sensor networks, we propose an optimization problem which minimizes the average expected state estimation error based on the proposed algorithm. To solve the proposed problem efficiently, we transform it into a convex optimization problem. And a sub-optimal solution is attained. Optimizing pinning control of complex dynamical networks based on spectral properties of grounded laplacian matrices

Pinning control of a complex network aims at forcing the states of all nodes to track an external signal by controlling a small number of nodes in the network. In this paper, an algebraic graph-theoretic condition is introduced to optimize pinning control. When individual node dynamics and coupling strength of the network are given, the effectiveness of pinning scheme can be measured by the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian matrix obtained by deleting the rows and columns corresponding to the pinned nodes from the Laplacian matrix of the network. The larger this smallest eigenvalue, the more effective the pinning scheme. Spectral properties of the smallest eigenvalue are analyzed using the network topology information, including the spectrum of the network Laplacian matrix, the minimal degree of uncontrolled nodes, the number of edges between the controlled node set and the uncontrolled node set, etc. The identified properties are shown effective for optimizing the pinning control strategy, as demonstrated by illustrative examples. Finally, for both scale-free and small-world networks, in order to maximize their corresponding smallest eigenvalues, it is better to pin the nodes with large degrees when the percentage of pinned nodes is relatively small, while it is better to pin nodes with small degrees when the percentage is relatively large. A switching adaptive controller with commutation delay compensation is proposed to control the torque output and to reduce commutation torque ripple in uncertain brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drives. After deriving the error dynamics, the conduction and commutation periods of the drive is taken into account separately, and two different controllers are designed for each operation region of the current loop of BLDCM drives. All the system constants in the mathematical model of the drive are considered uncertain, and adaptation rules are derived for these unknown parameters. The stability of the closed-loop system is shown by a common Lyapunov function, and the convergence of the current error to zero is proved as well. Finally, a commutation delay compensation scheme is introduced and added to the controller structure. Various numerical simulations are performed for different working conditions to test the viability of the proposed controller.

Fast signal recovery from saturated measurements by linear loss and nonconvex penalties

Sign information is the key to overcoming the inevitable saturation error in compressive sensing systems, which causes information loss and results in bias. For sparse signal recovery from saturation, we propose to use a linear loss to improve the effectiveness from existing methods that utilize hard constraints/hinge loss for sign consistency. Due to the use of linear loss, an analytical solution in the update progress is obtained, and some nonconvex penalties are applicable, e.g., the minimax concave penalty, the 0 norm, and the sorted 1 norm. Theoretical analysis reveals that the estimation error can still be bounded. Generally, with linear loss and nonconvex penalties, the recovery performance is significantly improved, and the computational time is largely saved, which is verified by the numerical experiments. Modelling and simulation of the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building is essential to test any proposed thermal comfort controller and strategy in the building. Like other plants, the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building can be developed based on the white box model, black box model, and grey box model. This research focuses on the usage of autoregressive–moving-average (ARMA) model, a type of black box model to represent the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of Industrial Instrumentation Laboratory at Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), UniversitiTeknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur and uses the real recorded data from the laboratory and minimal knowledge regarding the physical characteristics of the humidity behaviour in the laboratory. The performance of the ARMA model developed in this research is compared with the real recorded data from the laboratory. Result obtained shows that the ARMA model is enough for modelling and simulating the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of the laboratory

Breast cancer is the most often detected cancer in women. At the same time, it is one of the most curable types of cancer if diagnosed early. With the development of the detection technology, a growing amount of clinical data and highdimensional features can be used for breast cancer diagnosis. The high-dimensional data contributes to advances in the diagnostic technology, but also incurs a large amount of computational redundancy. Thus, extracting important information and reducing the feature dimension is critical to effective prediction and an accurate treatment ***, the previous works for breast cancer diagnosis are mainly based on labeled data that is difficult to obtain. To address this issue, in this paper, we demonstrate a new scheme, which integrates a deep learning based unsupervised feature extraction algorithm, the stacked auto-encoders, with a support vector machine model（SAE-SVM）, for breast cancer diagnosis. The stacked auto-encoders with the greedy layerwise pre-training and an improved momentum update algorithm is applied to capture essential information and extract necessary features of the original data. Then, a support vector machine model is employed to classify the samples with new features into malignant or benign tumors. The proposed method was tested on the Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer data set. The performance is evaluated using various measures and compared with the previously published results. The comparison results show that the proposed SAE-SVM method improves the accuracy to 98.25% and outperforms the other methods. The deep learning based unsupervised feature extraction significantly improves the performance of classification and provides a promising approach to breast cancer diagnosis.

We analyze exclusion zones (EZs) for indoor environments in nuclear power plants and compare them with the EZ in free space. When an indoor environment is considered, the lower transmitted power is recommended since multiple reflections increases stronger scattered power. The EZ area is the widest when the transmitter is at the center of the I&C room.

This paper demonstrates the functionality and ease of use of a recently implemented robust exact differentiator block for numerical simulations performed within the Matlab/Simulink software environment. It is demonstrated that the differentiator block may be used for various applications and may be easily integrated within existing Simulink models. The underpinning discrete-time differentiation algorithm is briefly outlined and its parameters for differentiator orders up to 10 are presented. An extended version of the toolbox supports the so-called automatic code generation feature of Matlab/Simulink. This functionality allows compilable code to be produced for many available hardware platforms. Three applications are presented in the paper, two of which require the generation of executable code. The third simulation-based application presents a differentiator based edge detection algorithm for image processing purposes which directly utilises the Simulink block. The three applications employ differentiators of order 4, 3 and 2, respectively. © 2017

This paper analyzes the effects of shadowing in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links caused by haul trucks in surface mines. The work focuses on mobile cell sites, known as cell on wheels (COWs), which are widely used by the mining industry. The study relies on extensive ray tracing simulations based on realistic 3D CAD models and detailed propagation effects. The results are presented in terms of excess path loss for multiple frequency bands, namely 795 MHz, 2.6 GHz, 5.9 GHz and 28 GHz. As expected, blockage is very severe for mmW transmissions, but our results show that even sub-1 GHz links may suffer shadowing losses exceeding 20 dB under unfavorable conditions, e.g. haul trucks lifting the dump bed. The results can also guide future measurement campaigns and provide useful insights for engineers planning and optimizing mission-critical wireless networks in mines.
