This paper proposes a general robust active noise control (RANC) framework for removing power line interference (PLI) from the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals when both reference and primary signals are contaminated by spike noise. It is obtained by exploiting the robust property of M-estimation function against impulses. According to this new framework, two commonly used methods, namely, least mean squares (LMS) and normalized least mean squares (NLMS), are extended in parallel to least mean M-estimate (LMM) and normalized least mean M-estimate (NLMM), respectively. Experimental results based on the benchmark MIT-BIH Polysomnographic Database show the sufficient capability of our methods for cancelling PLI in EEG signals with noisy observations and excellent performance for rejecting spikes existing in PLI and EEG signals.

In this paper, four elements fractal shape antenna with non-uniform annular ring Photonic Band Gap (PBG) etched in the ground is presented. The impact of the PBG structure in removing the undesired harmonic frequencies of the proposed antenna is demonstrated. The proposed antenna is designed, fabricated and tested. The results show that the designed antenna is capable of resonating at three different frequencies of 915 MHz, 1.8 GHz and 2.45 GHz with high-efficiency performance in terms of return loss, gain and radiation pattern characteristics with compact size. Good agreement between the measured and the simulated results is observed.

The purpose of this paper is to assess the economic impact following as a result of the conversion of conventional stations to cogeneration plants connected to a system for distributing heat and refrigeration. The analysis will be carried out through a financial evaluation in order to assess yearly variations of the whole scheme expenditure. In particular, yearly capital and operating costs of supplying cold and heat to urban areas that represent weather conditions in northern, central, and southern Europe were studied. In the base case scenario, today conditions are represented; they will be compared with alternative scenarios in which existing conventional thermal power stations will be converted into cogeneration plants. This research work contributes to the pool of existing knowledge by giving a (so far not addressed) weather centered system perspective. From the conducted evaluation, it was found that, in the case of deciding to convert the studied conventional thermal plants into cogeneration plants, investing in the necessary infrastructure associated means that yearly expenses for the power plants located in Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven, Bristol, and Cartagena would decrease by 215, 89, and 192 million euros respectively, making this technology a highly attractive option from economic, energetic, and environmental perspectives.

Nowadays wind turbine rotors are usually employed with pitch control mechanisms to avoid deep stall conditions. Despite that, wind turbines often operate under pitch fault situation causing massive flow separation to occur. Pure Blade Element Momentum (BEM) approaches are not designed for this situation and inaccurate load predictions are already expected. In the present studies, BEM predictions are improved through the inclusion of a stall delay model for a wind turbine rotor operating under pitch fault situation of -2.3° towards stall. The accuracy of the stall delay model is assessed by comparing the results with available Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations data.
