This paper considers the boundary control of a star-shaped open-channel network modeled by the Saint-Venant equations. We present the boundary feedback stabilization of the Saint-Venant equations by means of a Riemann invariants method. The estimation of the parameters satisfying the stability condition is deduced. The boundary feedback control is developed to guarantee that the solution of the controlsystem decays exponentially, only by taking the water levels at the gate boundaries as the feedback.

The control and management problem for large-scale complex urban traffic network is not yet successfully addressed. There are still many difficulties in controlling such large systems, e.g. complexity, high dimension, multiple control objectives, and uncertainties. In the paper, a multi-level MPC hierarchy is proposed to address these difficulties for the control of large-scale urban traffic networks. Under the control hierarchy, a multi-level MPC algorithm is proposed, which includes three levels, the demand balance MPC, the subnetwork MPC, and the intersection controller from top to bottom. A case study is carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the multi-level controller.

Maintaining foodstuff within predefined temperature thresholds is important due to legislative requirements and to sustain high foodstuff quality. This is achieved using a refrigeration system. However, these systems might not be dimensioned for hot summer days or possible component performance degradation. A learning based algorithm is proposed in this paper, which precools the foodstuff in an anticipatory manner based on the saturation level in the system on recent days. The method is evaluated using a simulation model of a supermarket refrigeration system and simulations show that thermal energy can be stored in foodstuff to cope with saturation in refrigeration equipment. Additional hardware or a system model is not required, making it easy to implement the method in existing systems.

It is well-known that there are fundamental performance limitations in the design of linear feedback controlsystems for single-input-single-output (SISO) linear-time-invariant (LTI) plants. These performance limitations sometimes include overshoot and rise time. This paper shows that for some examples of SISO LTI systems, it is possible to find suitable reset controllers that can overcome such performance limitations, though there are still some robust and implementable issues that need to be solved. This naturally leads to the formulation of several open research problems that we specify.

In order to improve effluent water quality prediction precision of wastewater treatment system, the main factors which have influence on the effluent quality are analyzed. Wastewater treatment system is a multi-input multi-output system. But the traditional support vector regression machine (SVRM) algorithms are only used for single-output systems. If several SVRM models are constructed for multi-input multi-output systems, it will increase the complexity of the algorithm and the precision is poor for the correlation of output variables. In order to solve prediction problem of multi-output system, a method of multi-output least squares support vector regression machine (LS-SVRM) based on immune optimization is proposed in this study. The multi-output LS-SVRM is used to predict effluent quality, using the immune algorithm to optimize the parameters of the multi-output LS-SVRM. Simulation shows that the proposed method has a better prediction precision for wastewater treatment system.

A stabilized Distributed MPC for large scale system is proposed and its designation is given in this paper for improving the global performance of closed-loop system. To make the performance of closed-loop system more close to that using centralized MPC, each subsystem-based MPC added the cost of the entire system into its optimization cost function. In addition, a consistency constraint and dual mode strategy are designed and adopted. Provided an initially feasible solution can be found, subsequent feasibility of the algorithm is guaranteed at every update, and the asymptotic stabilization is established.

The definitions of regularity, impulse-free and admissibility are given first, then a sufficient and necessary condition of admissibility for fractional-order singular system is established. A numerical example is included to illustrate the proposed condition.
