Abstract The activated sludge process is the main process in most urban wastewater treatment systems. It is considered complex in nature, and building its mathematical model in practice becomes difficult. A simple and easy way to build the simulation models for the system is needed. In this paper, a LabVIEW based simulator for the system is presented. LabVIEW offers a highly efficient, simple and flexible platform for simulation and control. Building applications in LabVIEW require less coding, and debugging is easy and fast. The proposed simulator utilizes the Benchmark Simulation Model no.1 (BSM 1) for the biochemical reactor and clarification processes. The operation of the simulator is via a graphical user interface (GUI) built in the LabVIEW environment. The simulation results can be displayed in digital and graphical forms. Simulation results obtained were compared with the results from other software simulation packages in which the COST/IWA Simulation Benchmark has been implemented. The developed simulator is very useful due to its efficiency and accuracy in simulating the wastewater process model. The simulator can serve as a training tool for plant operators/students to provide them with better knowledge and understanding of the process.

This paper presents a challenging industrial benchmark for implementation of control strategies under realistic working conditions. The developed control strategies should perform in a plug & play manner, i.e. adapt to varying working conditions, optimize their performance, and provide fault tolerance. A fault tolerant strategy is needed to deal with a faulty sensor measurement of the evaporation pressure. The design and algorithmic challenges in the control of an evaporator include: unknown model parameters, large parameter variations, varying loads, and external discrete phenomena such as compressor switch on/off or abrupt change in compressor speed.

For a freeway traffic system with strict repeatable pattern, iterative learning control (ILC) has been successfully applied to local ramp metering for a macroscopic freeway environment by formulating the original ramp metering problem as an output tracking, disturbance rejection, and error compensation problem. In this paper, we address the freeway traffic ramp-metering system under a nonstrict repeatable pattern. ILC-based ramp metering and ILC add-on to ALINEA strategies are modified to deal with the presence of iteration-dependent parameters, iteration-dependent desired trajectory, and input constraints. Theoretical analysis and extensive simulations are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

This paper discusses period properties of some linear maps which are employed in various applications such as image encryption, public key cryptography and watermarking. Conditions for the bijectiveness of such maps and the existence of a period are presented. Period structure is also given. Then, the recurrence equation theory is adopted to address the period distribution problem. Finally, a framework to solve the problem is proposed with a demonstration of its effectiveness and efficiency into some applications.

The single-phase induction motor (SPIM) is one of the electrical machines more used in the World, and can be found in several fractional and sub-fractional horsepower applications in houses, offices, shoppings, farms, and industries. The introduction of more sophisticated applications has required the use of variable speed drives for SPIM, where the adoption of sensorless techniques is the more reasonable option for speed control due to the low cost of this electrical machine. A proposal for sensorless variable speed SPIM drive based on direct rotor field orientation techniques is presented in this paper. None transformation is used in order to eliminate the asymmetry of the stator windings of the SPIM. The rotor speed is estimated from an flux observer, which is based on two independent linear feedback controlsystems. The speed and flux estimatives are used in two control loop based on PID regulators, which determine the voltages to be applied to the SPIM windings by a three-legs VSI inverter. Using computer simulations, two situations are considered in order to demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the proposed sensorless speed control for SPIM drives: variations on rotor speed reference and the application of mechanical load.

In this paper a performance analysis is carried out, in order to evaluate the possibility to employ power line communication (PLC) between secondary substations of a medium voltage (MV) distribution networks in a smart grid. The study is focused on the analysis of PLC technologies and the evaluation of the influence quantities on the communication performance in the most common case of by-pass connection at MV bus-bars of secondary substations. Different quantities have been analyzed as modulation techniques, requested bandwidth and bitrate, coupling device and system attenuation versus frequency in order to find the best solution for a reliable communication system. A complete model of a real case study, the distribution network of Ustica Island, have been carried out. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

In this paper we present a new method for detecting moving object in infrared image sequences which contain nuisance objects and noise. The moving target detection approach is based on wavelet transform with GPU implementation. According to the features of the modulus maxima images after wavelet transform, the background clutter and noise are eliminated. The effectiveness of this new method is demonstrated by applying the resulting algorithm to infrared images containing moving targets.

A problem of optimised robust placement of the hard quality sensors in Drinking Water Distribution systems under several water demand scenarios for robust quality monitoring is formulated. Numerical algorithms to solve the problem are derived. The optimality is meant as achieving at the same time a desired trade off between the sensor capital and maintenance costs and resulting robust estimation accuracy of the monitoring algorithm for several water demand scenarios insuring robustness with respect to the demand uncertainty. The robust estimation algorithm recently developed by the authors is applied as a soft quality in design of the sensor placement algorithms. The method and algorithm are validated by application to Chojnice DWDS case study.

For a class of uncertain multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) discrete-time nonlinear systems with strong coupling and unstable zero-dynamics, an adaptive generalized predictive decoupling switching control method based on unmodeled dynamic compensation is proposed. It is only required that the higher order nonlinear terms of the system to satisfy a linear growth condition, rather than the global boundedness condition widely used. The analysis of stability and convergence of the adaptive control method are performed. Moreover, in designing the nonlinear generalized predictive decoupling controller, we combine the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) training with the "one-toone mapping" technique to adaptively estimate the unmodeled dynamics, so that the universal approximation property of ANFIS can be guaranteed. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method and validate the theoretical analysis.
