Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common disease of central nervous system among the elderly, and its complex symptoms bring up some difficulties for the clinical diagnosis. And Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment method for patients with Parkinson's disease. In this study, a method based on polar coordination system with varied origin was proposed to quantitatively evaluate the availability of DBS operation for patients with Parkinson's disease. Totally, seven patients with Parkinson's disease were participated in the spiral drawing experiment and their scores under Unified Parkinson's disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) were also recorded. According to the characteristics of hand movement in spiral drawing, a set of parameters were defined and calculated before and after DBS operation. Compared with the UPDRS scores, experimental results showed that this method of evaluation was consistent with the clinical diagnosis. The proposed method based on polar coordinate system with varied origin is effective in clinical diagnosis, and it provides a basis for quantitative evaluating the effectiveness of surgery and treatment.

In this paper, a method for voltage harmonic compensation in a microgrid operating in islanded and grid-connected modes is presented. Harmonic compensation is done through proper control of distributed generators (DGs) interface converters. In order to achieve proper sharing of the compensation effort among the DGs, a power named Harmonic Distortion Power (HDP) is defined. In the proposed method, the active and reactive power control loops are considered to control the powers injected by the DGs. Also, a virtual impedance loop and voltage and current proportional-resonant controllers are included. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method for compensation of voltage harmonics to an acceptable level. © 2011 AmirKabir Univ of Tech.

Chinese high speed rail network has been given more and more attentions recent years, and it is adopted to improve the whole developments of society. Medium-short term planning of Chinese high speed rail network is given and the topological structure of Chinese high-speed rail network is discussed to investigate the reliability of network based on complex network theory and graph theory. Several parameters are presented to assess the topological characteristics of Chinese high speed rail network, and the reliability and robustness of the network subject to attacks can be evaluated. The parameter called unit degree betwweenness is firstly proposed to assess the transportation capacity of lines connecting with the nodes. Two attack protocols, the largest degree node-based attacks and the highest betweenness node-based attacks, are involved into Chinese high speed rail network to assess the topological reliability and robustness, and the results show that the highest betweenness node-based attacks can cause more damages to the network than the largest degree node-based attacks. Structural interventions are adopted to improve the global connectivity and enhance the reliability and robustness of Chinese high speed rail network, and they are proved to be effective by simulations. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

This paper describes a research project regarding internationalization and development of intercultural competencies at three different universities and university colleges of engineering in Denmark. Based on experiences from the past ten years with international study programs combined with knowledge from research about behavior of culturally diverse teams a setup for researching the impact on engineering students' intercultural competencies when solving problems together in multicultural teams is made. The setup for the research project was developed during spring 2010 and the actual investigation was carried out during the autumn 2010 and early spring 2011. This paper explains the background and the setup of the project and presents some preliminary results and recommendations from the research. Copyright © 2015 SEFI.

The Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) algorithm is useful for calculating spatial filters for detecting event-related desynchronization (ERD) for use in ERD-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, basic CSP is a supervised algorithm suited only to two-class discrimination;it is unable to solve multiclass discrimination problems. This paper proposes a new method named the binary common spatial patterns (BCSP) algorithm to extend the basic CSP method to multi-class recognition. Our method arranges the spatial filters and Fisher classifiers in the form of a binary tree whereby N - 1 spatial filters and N - 1 Fisher classifiers are calculated for N class recognition. This is fewer than must be calculated in other methods (e.g. one-versus-rest, OVR). This makes the overall classification procedure less redundant. Simulation results show that BCSP has better performance than the OVR scheme and outperforms the three best teams in the 2008 BCI-competition. © 2011 IEEE.

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, and its complex symptoms bring some difficulties for the clinical diagnosis. In this study, a method based on mathematical modeling of hand movement in spiral drawing was proposed to quantitatively evaluate the performance of patients with Parkinson's disease. Unlike the previous works, the hand movement data in spiral drawing were analyzed and modeled under the polar coordinate system with varied origin. Experimental results gained from the model showed that this method of evaluation was consistent with the clinical diagnosis before and after deep brain stimulation operation. The proposed method based on mathematical modeling in polar coordinate system with varied origin is effective in clinical diagnosis, and it provides a basis for quantitative evaluating the effectiveness of surgery and treatment.

The design of voltage regulators for mobile computing applications is complicated by several factors that lead to making tradeoffs between efficiency, voltage ripple and dynamic response. Careful choices must be made in selecting the passive and active components order to accommodate for the performance figures required to achieve compatibility for DVS ready processors. A suitable control scheme must be selected that can suffice the stability and dynamic response required. This paper describes the design of Buck converter that has a fuzzy controller implemented using Atmel Atmega189 RISC Based microcontroller with a choice of hardware components that will ensure better efficiency while delivering good stability and dynamic response. system simulation was carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results showed that the fuzzy controller has the capability of providing response characteristics that makes it comparable with PID controllers and more suitable for implementation using microcontrollers.

Resource management is a complicated problem in multiprocessor system. When tasks with real-time characteristic are scheduled on processor resource constraints such as CPU and memory have to be met, however, it is usually difficult for a system to ensure load balancing and resource constraints simultaneity. In order to handle this problem lots of algorithms have been brought forward. In this paper, a load balancing policy is proposed to manage and integrate processing resource of multiprocessor system which is used to send packets of packets flows on time. The policy dynamically predicts the wait time before a packet to be processed based on the load of the processor and the timestamp of the packet, and decides the migration of packet between processors to guarantee that the packets can be processed before deadline. This policy can not only increase the multiprocessor utilization but also enhance the capacity of the system against the jitter of load by packets migration between the processors as well. We use simulation experiment to show that the policy can reduce the possibility of packets delay and increase the concurrency of flows that the system can serve.1 © 2011 AICIT.

Adaptive control design is studied for a class of robotic turntable servo systems with friction dynamics. A newly developed continuously differentiable friction model is utilized, where the explicit model parameters are incorporated into the neural network weights adaptation. To further enhance the adaptation convergence and to reduce the tracking error, a velocity predictor is proposed to develop a composite adaptation law combining the tracking error and the predictor error. Stability analysis and bounds for both errors are guaranteed, and extensive experimental investigations are performed on a two-axis robotic turntable to assess the advantages and the achievable control performance of the proposed schemes. © 2011 IEEE.
