Drawing inspiration from the Lyapunov control technique for quantum systems, feedback-based quantum al-gorithms have been proposed for calculating the ground states of Hamiltonians. In this work, we consider extending these algorithms to tackle calculating excited states. Inspired by the weighted subspace-search variational quantum eigensolver al-gorithm, we propose a novel weighted feedback-based quantum algorithm for excited state calculation. We show that depending on how we design the weights and the feedback law, we can prepare the pth excited state or lowest energy states up to the pth excited state. Through an application in quantum chemistry, we show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, evaluating its efficacy via numerical simulations.

Ocean engineering demands systemic solutions for mission-critical demands and technological challenges. From an industrial control perspective, development engineers need to factor in both costs and established standards to ensure the efficient implementation of the control system development lifecycle within a reasonable budget. Customization and reusability play key roles in driving down costs, resources, and development time when creating new applications. In the paper, the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) [5], Model Based systems engineering (MBSE), combined with real time Unified Modeling Language/systems Modeling Language (UML/SysML) are merged and tailored to produce an object-oriented (OO) control model. This model is then extensively applied to develop a controller for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). To reach this objective, the dynamic model of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) are linked with specific specializations of UAF/MBSE. In this setup, the model of analysis is precisely outlined through the detailed description of a use case model, aimed at closely capturing the intricate control demands. The designed model is then specialized by using the real-time UML/SysML to retain key blocks, which are used to describe in detail structures for control and behaviors of AUV. Next, the designed model is transformed into the model of implementation via round-trip engineering, facilitating the quick realization of an AUV controller. Building upon this object-oriented model, a controller for course-tracking applied to a miniature AUV was designed. The results from the simulation demonstrate the good feasibility of the proposed model.

Recently, feedback-based quantum algorithms have been introduced to calculate the ground states of Hamiltonians, inspired by quantum Lyapunov control theory. This paper aims to generalize these algorithms to the problem of calculating an eigenstate of a given Hamiltonian, assuming that the lower energy eigenstates are known. To this aim, we propose a new design methodology that combines the layer-wise construction of the quantum circuit in feedback-based quantum algorithms with a new feedback law based on a new Lyapunov function to assign the quantum circuit parameters. We present two approaches for evaluating the circuit parameters: one based on the expectation and overlap estimation of the terms in the feedback law and another based on the gradient of the Lyapunov function. We demonstrate the algorithm through an illustrative example and through an application in quantum chemistry. To assess its performance, we conduct numerical simulations and execution on IBM’s superconducting quantum computer. © 2024, CC BY.

Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithm for Constrained Optimization Problems

The feedback-based algorithm for quantum optimization (FALQON) has recently been proposed to find ground states of Hamiltonians and solve quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems. This paper efficiently generalizes FALQON to tackle quadratic constrained binary optimization (QCBO) problems. For this purpose, we introduce a new operator that encodes the problem's solution as its ground state. Using control theory, we design a quantum control system such that the state converges to the ground state of this operator. When applied to the QCBO problem, we show that our proposed algorithm saves computational resources by reducing the depth of the quantum circuit and can perform better than FALQON. The effectiveness of our proposed algorithm is further illustrated through numerical simulations. © 2024, CC BY.

The two control objectives of voltage regulation and precise current sharing are conflicting in multi-bus DC microgrids. In this paper, a distributed control strategy is proposed, and it can achieve accurate current sharing and regulate the voltage of a critical node to the rated value. However, such a distributed control system is susceptible to potential cyber attacks that could deteriorate microgrids performances by corrupting communication links or actuators. To overcome these difficulties, we design the interconnected communication networks to establish a resilient cooperative system of multiple microgrids against unknown bounded injection attacks. The proposed resilient control strategy can achieve the control objectives of maintaining voltage regulation and current sharing within each microgrids under different operating conditions, and the interconnected system consisting of multiple microgrids cooperates to mitigate the adverse effect of cyber attacks. The dynamics and stability of the overall close-loop system of the DC microgrids are analyzed, in the present or absent of cyber attacks. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in two 4-bus DC microgrids. © 2023 IEEE.

The complex permeability of magnetic cores acts as a vital factor in electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering choke design and optimization. Many efforts have been reported for toroid cores, but fewer target those with other shapes, such as EE, EI, UU, and UI cores. Owing to their commonly used in planar EMI filters, determining the complex permeability of them is of significance. Targeting EE cores, this paper presents a flexible printed circuit board (PCB)-based fixture adapter tailored designed for performing the measurement, while the corresponding core permeability can be calculated through magnetic flux path length analysis. The experiments validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed methods, spanning a wide frequency range up to 120 MHz. ©2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new variational Gaussian filtering approach for estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamic system. We first assume that the predictive distribution of the state is Gaussian and derive an iterative method for updating the state posterior in the natural parameter space through KullbackLeibler divergence minimization. The obtained update rule is the same as that of the conjugate-computation variational inference technique in Bayesian learning. The derivation here is simpler and more insightful. We then impose a Wishart prior on the inverse of the state prediction covariance to take into account the impact of approximating the state predictive distribution using a Gaussian density on the state posterior estimation. The prediction covariance is identified jointly with the state using variational inference and the established state posterior update rule to achieve the desired Gaussian filtering. Simulation study examines the performance of the proposed filtering framework in target tracking based on bearing and range measurements. © 2024 ISIF.

This paper is concerned with bearing-based cooperative target entrapping control of multiple uncertain agents with arbitrary maneuvers including shape deformation, rotations, scalings, etc. A leader-follower structure is used, where the leaders move with the predesigned trajectories, and the followers are steered by an estimation-based control method, integrating a distance estimator using bearing measurements and a stress matrix-based formation controller. The signum functions are used to compensate for the uncertainties so that the agents’ accelerations can be piecewise continuous and bounded to track the desired dynamics. With proper design of the leaders’ trajectories and a geometric configuration, an affine matrix is determined so that the inter-agent relative bearings can be persistently exciting since the bearing rates are related to different weighted combinations of the affine matrix vectors. The asymptotic convergence of the estimation and control error is proved using Filipov properties and cascaded system theories. A sufficient condition for inter-agent collision avoidance is also proposed. Finally, simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the method.

Global Navigation Satellite systems (GNSS) can provide real-time positioning information for outdoor users, but cannot for indoor scenarios or heavily occluded outdoor scenarios. Strap-down Inertial Navigation system (SINS) are widely used to locate people in complex interior or heavily occluded outdoor scenarios due to its light weight and low power consumption. However, IMU of SINS are noisy, and the sampling data error is large, which is a divergence of the error with time. Therefore, it will generate a positioning accumulation error, which affects the final positioning accuracy. The problem of cumulative IMU errors is usually dealt with by Zero-Velocity Update (ZUPT). The zero-velocity detection part of basic ZUPT method usually uses a single threshold to determine the gait of pedestrian, which often has the problem of gait misjudgment and omission. To address these problems, this paper proposes a composite conditional detection method to solve the problem of misjudgment in the zero-velocity interval. In addition, we redesign the zero-velocity update algorithm and uses the Cubature Kalman filter (CKF) for pedestrian positioning error correction. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ZUPT method based on dual-threshold detection can better detect the interval between pedestrian motion and stationery than ones with single threshold. The zero-velocity update algorithm based on CKF has higher performance than conventional EKF and UKF methods, which constrains the cumulative error of SINS to about 0.2% of the whole walking distance. © 2023 IEEE.
