The design of an adaptive sinusoidal disturbance rejection controller for Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems is presented in this paper. Sinusoidal disturbance rejection problems exist in industry applications such as velocity ripples in a CNC milling machine. The controller is first developed based on the Internal Model Principle (IMP) and the polezero placement technique, then a Gain Scheduled (GS) robust Two-Degree-of-Freedom (2DOF) regulator is constructed to eliminate the sinusoidal disturbances with known frequencies and to achieve a desirable tracking response simultaneously, but without estimating the amplitude and the phase values of the sinusoidal disturbances. Using the small gain theorem, the system stability radius is obtained for n slow time varying sinusoidal disturbances. Finally, the proposed controller is applied to eliminate the torque and velocity ripples in the Alternating Current (AC) Permanent Magnet (PM) motor controlsystems.

It is difficult for a novice rider to navigate an omni-directional wheelchair through a narrow space such an elevator door or a path along the wall because it is always necessary to keep in mind the width of the vehicle. Such navigation can produce stress in the operator. In those cases, a navigation guidance system that appeals to human's sensation of touch can be useful. In this paper, a novel navigation guidance system using a haptic feedback joystick is proposed for the omni-directional wheelchair. The present navigation guidance system adopts a force feedback joystick in order to induce the operator to evade obstacles.

This paper studies the trade-off between energy consumption and food quality loss, at varying ambient conditions, in supermarket refrigeration systems. Compared with the traditional operation with pressure control, a large potential for energy savings without extra loss of food quality is demonstrated. We also show that by utilizing the relatively slow dynamics of the food temperature, compared with the air temperature, we are able to further lower both the energy consumption and the peak value of power requirement. The Pareto optimal curve is found by off-line optimization.

A new neural-network-based inverse hysteresis model is proposed in this paper. The continuous transformation technique is used to construct an elementary inverse hysteresis operator (EIHO), which extracts the elementary information of inverse hysteresis. The output of the EIHO is then used as one of the input signals of the neural network (NN) so that the multi-valued mapping of inverse hysteresis is transformed into a one-to-one mapping. In this way, neural networks can be used to model inverse hysteresis. A set of real data is also used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Finally, simulation results indicate that the proposed approach is successful.

In this paper simple techniques based on nonlinear geometric transformations are presented for creating an effective 3D impression (stereovision or illusion of depth) from a single 2D original. Our aim is to propose semi-automatic ways to transform 2D images into their suggestive but plausible 3D anaglyph versions. Three conversion methods based on a binary depth map are proposed and the influence of various RGB component shifts on the 3D impression quality is studied.

In a previous paper we analyze the electromagnetic immunity degree of a generic virtual instrument, in particular focussing on the measurement uncertainty evaluation. The analysis was performed by means of experimental tests subjecting the instruments to the normalized disturbances prescribed by the IEC-61326 standard. In this paper, starting from the results of the experiments, we define and validate a procedure which, by means of a simple and fast test, allows the assessment of the actual measurement uncertainty, taking into account the effect of the unknown electromagnetic disturbances that are actually present in the place where the measurement is performed.

The monitoring and/or sounding of lightning discharges and their associated phenomena (mesospheric optical emissions etc.) has been performed by radio and optical measurements. We pay attention to the winter lightning in the Hokuriku area (Japan Sea side) of Japan, because it is extremely important to investigate whether lighting discharges in the Hokuriku area (whole spatial scale is relatively small in comparison with the conventional summer lightning in the US) could trigger the mesospheric optical emissions. The optical observation of those mesospheric emissions and the corresponding radio sounding by ELF and VHF radio waves of their parent lightning, have been reported. The observing systems are firstly presented, and our latest observational facts on the mesospheric emissions in the Hokuriku area, their parent lightning and some computer simulations on the sprite initiation, are presented.

The paper presents an ongoing investigation of applying finite state machines (FSM) to drive a meal assistance robot based on electromyogram (EMG) signals. An adapting single-threshold method on EMG power is proposed to recognize different elevation gestures. Predefined control commands are output by FSM based on the extracted EMG features, and used to operate the robot. The performance of control mode is tested in efficiency and comfortableness by both subjective and objective indices. And the high performance of the EMG-control meal assistance robot makes it feasible for users with upper limbs motor disabilities.
