Robot localization using a previously built map is essential for a variety of tasks including highly accurate navigation and mobile manipulation. A popular approach to robot localization is based on image-to-point cloud registration, which combines illumination-invariant LiDAR-based mapping with economical image-based localization. However, the recent works for image-to-point cloud registration either divide the registration into separate modules or project the point cloud to the depth image to register the RGB and depth images. In this paper, we present I2PNet, a novel end-to-end 2D-3D registration network. I2PNet directly registers the raw 3D point cloud with the 2D RGB image using differential modules with a unique target. The 2D-3D cost volume module for differential 2D-3D association is proposed to bridge feature extraction and pose regression. 2D-3D cost volume module implicitly constructs the soft point-to-pixel correspondence on the intrinsic-independent normalized plane of the pinhole camera model. Moreover, we introduce an outlier mask prediction module to filter the outliers in the 2D-3D association before pose regression. Furthermore, we propose the coarse-to-fine 2D-3D registration architecture to increase localization accuracy. We conduct extensive localization experiments on the KITTI Odometry and nuScenes datasets. The results demonstrate that I2PNet outperforms the state-of-the-art by a large margin. In addition, I2PNet has a higher efficiency than the previous works and can perform the localization in real-time. Moreover, we extend the application of I2PNet to the camera-LiDAR online calibration and demonstrate that I2PNet outperforms recent approaches on the online calibration task. A Cooperation-Aware Lane Change Method for Autonomous Vehicles

Lane change for autonomous vehicles (AVs) is an important but challenging task in complex dynamic traffic environments. Due to difficulties in guarantee safety as well as a high efficiency, AVs are inclined to choose relatively conservative strategies for lane change. To avoid the conservatism, this paper presents a cooperation-aware lane change method utilizing interactions between vehicles. We first propose an interactive trajectory prediction method to explore possible cooperations between an AV and the others. Further, an evaluation is designed to make a decision on lane change, in which safety, efficiency and comfort are taken into consideration. Thereafter, we propose a motion planning algorithm based on model predictive control (MPC), which incorporates AV’s decision and surrounding vehicles’ interactive behaviors into constraints so as to avoid collisions during lane change. Quantitative testing results show that compared with the methods without an interactive prediction, our method enhances driving efficiencies of the AV and other vehicles by 14.8% and 2.6% respectively, which indicates that a proper utilization of vehicle interactions can effectively reduce the conservatism of the AV and promote the cooperation between the AV and others. The importance of a mature, maintainable design of automation software in Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPS) is continuously increasing since a growing proportion of the system functionality is implemented via software. As a result, system complexity is shifting more and more towards the software side. Quality characteristics such as flexibility, maintainability, and extensibility, whose importance is increasing in the context of Industry 4.0, are thus becoming harder to achieve. These challenges can only be solved through sound architectural design. While there is a common understanding of good software architecture and appropriate methods to achieve it in computer science, a suitable architecture definition for automation software that takes all relevant factors into account is still missing in the field of CPPS. Therefore, based on a workshop with international scientists with different perspectives on CPPS, this paper presents influencing factors on automation software architecture. On this basis, a joint definition for software architecture in CPPS, as well as challenges and future research potentials, are derived.

Joint Observer Gain and Input Design for Asymptotic Active Fault Diagnosis

This paper proposes a joint gain and input design method for observer-based asymptotic active fault diagnosis, which is based on a newly-defined notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Using the excluding degree, a quantitative specification is obtained to characterize the performance of set-based robust fault diagnosis. Furthermore, a single gain design method and a joint gain and input design method are proposed, respectively. This is the first work to achieve a joint observer gain and input design for set-based active fault diagnosis. Compared with the existing methods that design gains and input separately, the proposed joint gain and input design method has advantages to exploit the fault diagnosis potential of observer-based schemes. Distributed Stabilization of Signed Networks via Self-loop Compensation

This paper examines the stability and distributed stabilization of signed multi-agent networks. Here, positive semidefiniteness is not inherent for signed Laplacians, which renders the stability and consensus of this category of networks intricate. First, we examine the stability of signed networks by introducing a novel graph-theoretic objective negative cut set, which implies that manipulating negative edge weights cannot change a unstable network into a stable one. Then, inspired by the diagonal dominance and stability of matrices, a local state damping mechanism is introduced using self-loop compensation. The self-loop compensation is only active for those agents who are incident to negative edges and can stabilize signed networks in a fully distributed manner. Quantitative connections between selfloop compensation and the stability of the compensated signed network are established for a tradeoff between compensation efforts and network stability. Necessary and/or sufficient conditions for predictable cluster consensus of compensated signed networks are provided. The optimality of self-loop compensation is discussed. Furthermore, we extend our results to directed signed networks where the symmetry of signed Laplacian is not free. The correlation between the stability of the compensated dynamics obtained by self-loop compensation and eventually positivity is further discussed. Novel insights into the stability of multi-agent systems on signed networks in terms of self-loop compensation are offered. Simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results. Independent dimensional phase transition on a two-dimensional Kuramoto model with matrix coupling

The high-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Kuramoto paradigm has been an essential step in bringing about a more faithful depiction of the dynamics of real-world systems. Despite the multi-dimensional nature of the oscillators in these generalized models, the interacting schemes so far have been dominated by a scalar factor unanimously between any pair of oscillators that leads eventually to synchronization on all dimensions. As a natural extension of the scalar coupling befitting for the one-dimensional case, we take a tentative step in studying numerically and theoretically the coupling mechanism of 2 × 2 real matrices on two-dimensional Kuramoto oscillators. One of the features stemmed from this new mechanism is that the matrix coupling enables the two dimensions of the oscillators to separate their transitions to either synchronization or desynchronization which has not been seen in other high-dimensional generalizations. Under various matrix configurations, the synchronization and desynchronization of the two dimensions combine into four qualitatively distinct modes of position and motion of the system. We demonstrate that as one matrix is morphed into another in a specific manner, the system mode also switches correspondingly either through continuous or explosive transitions of the order parameters, thus mimicking a range of behaviors in information science and biology. Finite-size scaling of geometric renormalization flows in complex networks

Some characteristics of complex networks need to be derived from global knowledge of the network topologies, which challenges the practice for studying many large-scale real-world networks. Recently, the geometric renormalization technique has provided a good approximation framework to significantly reduce the size and complexity of a network while retaining its “slow” degrees of freedom. However, due to the finite-size effect of real networks, excessive renormalization iterations will eventually cause these important “slow” degrees of freedom to be filtered out. In this paper, we systematically investigate the finite-size scaling of structural and dynamical observables in geometric renormalization flows of both synthetic and real evolutionary networks. Our results show that these observables can be well characterized by a certain scaling function. Specifically, we show that the critical exponent implied by the scaling function is independent of these observables but depends only on the structural properties of the network. To a certain extent, the results of this paper are of great significance for predicting the observable quantities of large-scale real systems and further suggest that the potential scale invariance of many real-world networks is often masked by finite-size effects.

Particle manipulation behind turbid medium based on intensity transmission matrix

Optical tweezers can manipulate tiny particles. However, the distortion caused by the scattering medium restricts the applications of optical tweezers. Wavefront shaping techniques including the transmission matrix (TM) method are powerful tools to achieve light focusing behind the scattering medium. In this paper, we propose a new kind of TM, named intensity transmission matrix (ITM). Only relying on the intensity distribution, we can calculate the ITM with only about 1/4 measurement time of the widely used four-phase method. Meanwhile, ITM method can avoid the energy loss in diffraction introduced by holographic modulation. Based on the ITM, we have implemented particle manipulation with a high degree of freedom on single and multiple particles. In addition, the manipulation range is enlarged over twenty times (compared with the memory effect) to 200 μm. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Communication-Assisted Sensing in 6G Networks

Exploring the mutual benefit and reciprocity of sensing and communication (S&C) functions is fundamental to realizing deeper integration for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. This paper investigates a novel communication-assisted sensing (CAS) system within 6G perceptive networks, where the base station actively senses the targets through device-free wireless sensing and simultaneously transmits the estimated information to end-users. In such a CAS system, we first establish an optimal waveform design framework based on the rate-distortion (RD) and source-channel separation (SCT) theorems. After analyzing the relationships between the sensing distortion, coding rate, and communication channel capacity, we propose two distinct waveform design strategies in the scenario of target impulse response estimation. In the separated S&C waveforms scheme, we equivalently transform the original problem into a power allocation problem and develop a low-complexity one-dimensional search algorithm, shedding light on a notable power allocation tradeoff between the S&C waveform. In the dual-functional waveform scheme, we conceive a heuristic mutual information optimization algorithm for the general case, alongside a modified gradient projection algorithm tailored for the scenarios with independent sensing sub-channels. Additionally, we identify the presence of both subspace tradeoff and water-filling tradeoff in this scheme. With the rapid increase in demand for the fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G) in the BusinesstoBusiness (ToB) market, future factories, especially those involving a large number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, will prioritize deploying private networks to achieve prioritized scheduling, resource allocation, and security control over the entire network. The User Plane Function (UPF) is an important network element in the 5G core network. In practical deployments, UPF typically uses dedicated hardware devices, which are not only expensive but also have a tightly coupled architecture that imposes certain limitations on future network upgrades and scalability. To achieve flexible deployment of Network Private Network (NPN), we implemented the 5G core network architecture using Software Defined Networking (SDN) with Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors (P4) programmable switch. Subsequently, we conducted the connectivity test of the core network and analyzed the maximum achievable user capacity. Considering that the introduction of SDN may bring new security risks to private networks, we have designed a solution to mitigate SDN data plane Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and have proven its effectiveness through practical experiments.
