The Electrical engineering undergraduate program of the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo has created an alternative innovative curriculum path for its freshmen students in 2024. The Competency-based Path emphasizes the development of competencies and skills for the unprecedented technological advancements that necessitate a holistic education for future electrical engineers, preparing them with practical skills for real-world challenges. The program was designed using an innovative methodology and centers around semester-long or year-long integrative projects. These projects bridge the gap between theory and practice, as students deal with real-world challenges while fostering social responsibility.

Traditional aircraft control algorithms have a strong dependence on system models, and are difficult to cope with the increasingly complex battlefield environment for intelligent aircrafts. In this paper, a model-free reinforcement learning is proposed to solve an attitude stabilization problem of an aircraft based online intelligent control strategy. The attitude control problem is firstly formulated as an optimal control problem, and then an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) technology is applied to compute the corresponding nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Then, an actor-critic neural network structure is established to learn the optimal controller online not requiring the information of the aircraft dynamics. The proposed intelligent control strategy enables the aircraft to adjust its attitude according to the actual mission targets and environments under the proposed online control strategy, so that autonomous learning and intelligent operation can be realized. Finally, simulation examples are presented to validate the proposed model-free based control strategy.

Frequency support scheme based on parametrized power curve for de-loaded wind turbine under various wind speed

With increased wind power penetration in modern power systems, wind plants are required to provide frequency support similar to conventional plants. However, for the existing frequency regulation scheme of wind turbines, the control gains in the auxiliary frequency controller are difficult to set because of the compromise of the frequency regulation performance and the stable operation of wind turbines, especially when the wind speed remains variable. This paper proposes a novel frequency regulation scheme (FRS) for de-loaded wind turbines. Instead of an auxiliary frequency controller, frequency support is provided by modifying the parametrized power versus rotor speed (Pw-ωr) curve, including the inertia power versus rotor speed curve and the droop power versus rotor speed curve. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that it does not contain any control gains and generally adapts to different wind speeds. Further, the proposed scheme can work for the whole section of wind speed without wind speed measurement information. The compared simulation results demonstrate the scheme improves the system frequency response while ensuring the stable operation of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs)-based variable-speed wind turbines (VSWTs) under various wind conditions. Furthermore, the scheme prevents rotor speed overdeceleration even when the wind speed decreases during frequency regulation control. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The main feature of Magnus wind turbine is the ability to produce energy at low wind speed. This benefit lets to use such types of turbines in smart homes, which are an important part of the development of distributed energy systems, growth of blockchain electricity technology and needs for duplication of the solar energy system in the private buildings. This paper presents topology of two cylinders Magnus wind turbine in order to ensure the highest values of power coefficient and the Magnus force. The optimal ratio of wind speed and cylinder rotation speed were detected to eliminate the oscillations caused by the Von Karman vortex street phenomenon.

Due to its special features, the Magnus effect wind turbine allows you to produce energy at a very low speed of the wind. This fact, as well as the growing interest in the of blockchain technology, makes it possible to use this type of wind turbine in private household as part of a distributed energy system in addition to solar panels. The article describes a two blades Magnus wind turbine whose cylinders rotate by means of embedded motors. To avoid a von Karman vortex street effect that occur when the cylinders rotate in the air flow, as well as to ensure maximum power, the optimal ratio between the wind speed and the cylinder rotation speed is determined using finite element analysis. Further, the obtained relations are used in the algorithms of the wind turbine control system.

All-optical analog-to-digital conversion is a paramount issue in modern science. How to implement real-time and ultrafast quantization to optical pulses with different intensities in an all-optical domain is a central problem. Here, we report a realtime demonstration of an all-optical quantization scheme based on slicing the supercontinuum in a nonlinear fiber. In comparison with previous schemes through off-line analysis of the power of different optical spectral components in the supercontinuum, this, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of such functionality online in the time ***, the extinction ratio among the quantized outputs can exceed 10 d B, which further confirms the feasibility of the proposed quantization scheme. The current 3 bit resolution in the proof-of-principle experiment is limited by the current experimental condition, but it can be expected to be greatly enhanced through improving both the spectral width of the generated supercontinuum and the number of filtering channels used.

Prescribed-time cooperative guidance law with seeker-less followers against multiple targets

In this paper, a grouped prescribed-time cooperative guidance law (GPCGL) is proposed for multiple vehicles to attack multiple targets without collision, where one leader and seeker-less followers are involved in each subgroup. A distributed guidance law is presented for leaders to achieve separated time attack on their respective targets, while the guidance law for followers consists of two parts: tangential direction and normal direction in the follower-to-leader line-of-sight (LOS) frame. For the former, a proportional consensus guidance law is proposed based on an auxiliary control term to guarantee both the intra-subgroup cooperation and distance-based collision avoidance simultaneously;for the latter, a dynamic LOS angle constrained guidance law is applied to achieve direction-based collision avoidance. The proposed GPCGL is proved to be prescribed-time convergent, where the states can converge within the prescribed time. Simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Distributed cooperative guidance problems for multi-missile system with time-varying delays and switching topologies are investigated. Firstly, considering the complex communication environment, a two-step cooperative guidance strategy is proposed to achieve the simultaneous attack under time-varying delays and switching topologies. In the first step, a distributed cooperative guidance law using neighboring information is designed to coordinate range-to-go and leading angle based on feedback linearization and consensus theory. The second step starts while multi missiles disconnect from each other and hit the target using PNG (Proportional Navigation Guidance). Then, the algorithm with three steps is presented to select the parameters in the cooperative guidance law. And the stability of the multi-missile system is proven using Lyapunov-Krasovskii theory. Finally, a numerical simulation is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed cooperative guidance strategy.

In this paper, a coalition game with local and coupling constraints is studied for uncertain Euler-Lagrange (EL) systems subject to disturbances with unknown bounds. In the coalition game, each agent collaborates with other agents within the same coalition to optimize its coalition’s cost function while simultaneously competing against agents in other coalitions. Under a distributed framework where each agent has access only to its own action, cost function, and constraint parameters, a distributed strategy is proposed to seek the Nash equilibrium (NE). By combining adaptive methods and sign functions, model uncertainties and disturbances with unknown bounds in the EL system are compensated and suppressed, respectively. Furthermore, an integration of adaptive methods and consensus protocols is employed to update the Lagrange multipliers of both local and coupling constraints. A dynamic average consensus is employed to estimate the gradient of coalition function, while the leader-following protocol is adopted to estimate the actions of other agents. By leveraging Lyapunov theory, the NE is proven to be asymptotically stable. Moreover, an unmanned surface vehicle swarm confrontation is meticulously modeled and analyzed in the coalition game framework. A diverse array of tasks, including formation, encirclement, and interception, are systematically formulated. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. This paper discusses model order reduction of large sparse second-order index-3 differential algebraic equations (DAEs) by applying Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm (IRKA). In general, such DAEs arise in constraint mechanics, multibody dynamics, mechatronics and many other branches of sciences and technologies. By deflecting the algebraic equations the second-order index-3 system can be altered into an equivalent standard second-order system. This can be done by projecting the system onto the null space of the constraint matrix. However, creating the projector is computationally expensive and it yields huge bottleneck during the implementation. This paper shows how to find a reduce order model without projecting the system onto the null space of the constraint matrix explicitly. To show the efficiency of the theoretical works we apply them to several data of second-order index-3 models and experimental resultants are discussed in the paper. © 2021, CC BY.
