In this paper, variable weight theory and set pair analysis (SPA) theory are applied to comprehensive evaluation of power quality. Among existing comprehensive evaluation methods of power quality, the problems about index uncertainty and imbalance case are less considered. The application of variable weight SPA, for ensuring identical discrepancy contrary (IDC) of unsure system, effectively reduces the complication of assessment process. Variable weight SPA uses the hybrid model of variable weight to modify power quality indices vector, and the final weights of indices could be determined. Then it takes advantage of new weight vector to compute the relativity coefficient of power quality assessment points. Finally the levels of power quality assessment points are assessed by their relativity coefficient. The results of the simulation show that the method used to carry out comprehensive evaluation of power quality is simple, and the classification is detailed. This method could effectively decrease the impact on index uncertainty to assessment results.

Available transfer capability (ATC) is defined as a measure of the system's capability for transfers of power for further commercial activity, over and above already committed uses. In practical power markets, ATC can provide important information for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers. The assessment of ATC should be carried out to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power system and based on deterministic techniques. As high voltage direct current (HVDC) power distribution systems have been extensively used in modem transmission network, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC in AC-DC hybrid power system. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC for the integration of HVDC link with an AC power system. The mathematical model of ATC for AC-DC hybrid power system is proposed. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of hybrid power systems, several statistical indices are presented to evaluate ATC and they are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation. States of system operation can be simulated, and the algorithm based on MATPOWER (A MATLAB™ Power system Simulation Package) is developed in the environment of MATLAB 7.5. Case study with a modified IEEE 30-bus AC-DC hybrid power system is used to verify the presented approach. Sequential solution method is employed to deal with the AC-DC power flow. Five-number summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method is effective and practical. The research achievements are undergoing to transfer to the application in other hybrid power systems with different control style, and some new problems are suggested at the end of paper.

In practical power markets, Available Transfer Capability (ATC) is crucial for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers to make a good choice. It is an indication of the expected transfer capability remaining on the transmission network. In order to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems, the assessment of ATC should be carried out instantly. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power systems and based on deterministic techniques. As high performance computing has been extensively used in scientific computation and technology, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC by using parallel algorithm. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC by stochastic parallel algorithm in an AC power system. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of power systems, several statistical indices is presented to evaluate ATC. They are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation and parallel computing. The system operation states can be simulated by Monte Carlo method, and the parallel algorithm based on MATPOWER (A MATLAB™ Power system Simulation Package) is developed. Case study with an IEEE 30-bus power system is used to verify the presented approach. Five-number summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method can elapse shorter computation time and it is more effective and practical. Some new attractive issues are suggested at the end.

The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.

This paper represents an emulation of fuzzy logic control schemes in autonomous parallel parking system in a backward maneuver. There are four infrared sensors sending distance data to microcontroller for generating an obstacle-free parking path. Two of them mounted on the front and rare wheels on the parking side are used as the inputs to the fuzzy rules to calculate a proper steering angle while backing. The other two attached to the front and rear ends serve for avoiding collision with other cars along the parking space. At the end of parking process, the vehicle will be in line with other parked cars and position in the middle of the free space. A construction of fuzzy rules is designed based upon a wall following process. The effectiveness of the controller design is demonstrated in the experimental results. © 2009 SICE.

Fuzzy number type data is a typical class of fuzzy data, and it can be regarded as a general form of the interval data and the crisp data. This paper studies fuzzy clustering algorithm for triangular fuzzy numbers. First of all, we give a novel distance between triangular fuzzy numbers by using three parameters interval number, and prove that the proposed distance is a complete metric on the set of triangular fuzzy numbers. And then, based on this novel distance, we propose two fuzzy c-means type clustering algorithms for dealing with triangular fuzzy numbers. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the algorithm's effectiveness. © 2009 IEEE.

Maximum entropy thresholding method is a common image segmentation technology, several optimization algorithms are proposed based on maximum entropy objective function, these algorithms use subtraction instead of logarithm and multiplication and which are used in image segmentation. But for sparse histogram images, the segmentation based on the existing optimize methods is ineffective. In this paper, for sparse histogram image segmentation, an improved maximum entropy optimization algorithm is presented. Sparse histogram image segmentation experimental results show that more reasonable segmentation results can be obtained through using the algorithm. © 2009 IEEE.

In the situation in which a robot and a human work together by collaborating with each other, a robot and a human share one working environment, and each interferes in each other. In other ward, it is impossible to avoid the physical contact and the interaction of force between a robot and a human. The boundary of each complex dynamic occupation area changes in the connection movement which is the component of collaborative works at this time. The main restraint condition which relates to the robustness of that connection movement is each physical charactristics, that is, the embodiment. A robot body is variability though the embodiment of a human is almost fixed. Therefore, the safe and the robust connection movement is brought when a robot has the robot body which is well suitable for the embodiment of a human. A purpose for this research is that the colaboration works between the self-reconfiguration robot and a human is realized. To achieve this purpose, a self-reconfiguration algorithm based on some indexes to evaluate a robot body in the macroscopic point of view was examined on a modular robot system of the 2-D lattice structure. In this paper, it investigated effect specially that the object of learning of each individual was limited to the cooperative behavior between the adjoining modules toward the macroscopic evaluation index. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

It is important to minimize the dissipated energy even in a mechatronic system that repeats start and stop motions frequently. A forklift and an injection molder are a typical mechatronic system that repeat reciprocating motions. The reciprocal motions are realized by a ball screw-nut, which converts rotation into translation motion. The present paper proposes a simple method for determining an optimal lead of the ball screw-nut which minimizes the dissipated energy of the mechatronic system. The forward and backward efficiencies of the ball screw-nut are different and are functions of the lead. The dissipated energy depends on these efficiencies and the viscous friction of the system. By simplifying the viscous friction, the energy can be formulated as a function of the efficiencies. The optimal lead can be easily obtained by solving a quartic equation, which is reduced from the formulated energy function. It is verified that the proposed optimal lead is approximated well to the strictly optimal lead that is calculated numerically. The dissipated energy by the proposed optimal lead can be significantly decreased compared to a conventional inertia matching method.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer. © 2009 SICE.
