In wireless sensor networks, virtual backbone has been proposed as the routing infrastructure to alleviate the broadcasting storm problem and perform some other tasks such as area monitoring. Previous work in this area has mainly focused on how to construct a small virtual backbone for high efficiency, which is modeled as the minimum Connected Dominating Set (MCDS) problem. However, the nodes in the CDS need to carry other nodes' traffic and they are subject to failure. Therefore, it is desirable to construct a fault tolerant CDS. In this paper, we first propose a distributed algorithm to construct a connected dominating set (DACDS). Based on DACDS, we further develop a fault tolerant algorithm (kCDS). We also show our algorithm have better performance ratios and low message complexity.

In this paper a prototype emergency services system is presented, equipped with a multimedia database registering and storing relevant emergency situations in a semi automatic way. In this paper we assume that this database is created exclusively with sound and linguistic material won from emergency telephone calls. The presented system enables conducting speaker recognition experiments. Sources of data, metadata generation, architecture description, searching for results, and database implementation are comprised.

This paper focuses on the estimation of the non-measurable physical states of wastewater systems when nonlinear models with uncertainties describe the processes. The activated sludge process (ASP), as the most commonly applied biological wastewater purification technique, attracts a great deal of attention from the research community. We developed for this class of processes a state dependent differential Riccati filter (SDDRF) for state estimation of nonlinear model describing the system. The resulting software sensor is simple to implement and has a relatively low computational cost. The results are compared with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in order to demonstrate the better performance of the SDDRF filter. The filter allows the on-line tracking of process variables, which are not directly measurable. The simulation results point out to the advantage of using this approach.

A good black-start scheme is important and necessary to resume power supply fast and efficiently after black out, and how to choose black-start power is the first thing to consider in the scheme. In this paper, the advantages of VSC-HVDC as black start power are analyzed with contrast to traditional black start power. The ability of VSC-HVDC to soft energize major power system equipment is proved through simulation by software PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation waveforms during soft energization are illustrated. These plots have described the good voltage and frequency characteristics of VSC-HVDC. The transition from one control mode of VSC to another is also discussed. Simulation results indicate that by using soft energization, VSC-HVDC is an ideal black start power.

High-temperature superconductor (HTS) Gd-bulks are used for field-pole magnets of rotating machines. We have conducted a study of pulsed-field magnetization (PFM) for the bulks to be magnetized alternatively on the rotor. Performances of HTS bulks have been qualified on the basis of the field-cooling magnetization (FCM). HTS bulks are a kind of crystals containing lots of tiny crystals boundaries. It is difficult to find comparable data between PFM and FCM results, mainly because of the different pinning stability through both processes. We need to assess an effective method of characterization for the flux pinning stability under PFM. We compared two HTS bulks: one shows a flux flow and relatively small trapped flux while the other is magnetized with a little flux instability and a large integrated trapped flux. These Gd123 bulks are 100 mm in diameter and 20 mm in thickness. After applying PFM at the liquid nitrogen temperature, we measured the trapped field density distribution and introduced a new parameter representing the trapped flux instability at each position on the surface of the bulk. We propose a way of visualization of the flux pinning instability of the HTS bulks.

Home automation systems based on wireless sensor/actuator networks are characterized by diversity of node power sources, limited computational power, and mobility. We propose a routing protocol that fully uses the location of static nodes to limit the search for a route to a small zone based on the analysis of characteristics and requirements. The calculation of two different kinds of zone and the route discovery procedure are described in this paper. According to the environment of home automation, we compared the performance of our routing protocols with the ad-hoc on-demand distance-vector protocol using simulation and gave suggestions for zone selection. Simulation results showed that our routing protocol dramatically reduced the routing overhead and increased the reliability.

Quantitative analysis and detection of abnormalities for electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings during evoked activities are essential for clinical diagnosis on neurological disorders. However, the process of interpreting EEG is time consuming and requires experienced electroencephalographers (EEGers). In this study, a method of automatic EEG interpretation during hyperventilation was proposed. The purpose is to provide a quantitative interpretation of EEG which is able to conform to EEGers' visual inspection. The final integrated results of automatic interpretation were compared with EEGers' evaluation, and showed high consistence. © 2009 SICE.

Constant rate transmission and transport (CRTT) is an effective bandwidth smoothing scheme resulting in one fixed rate during the whole duration of variable bit-rate video, which, however, needs a large client buffer size. The minimum buffer requirement (MBR) of CRTT, besides benefiting the design of some piecewise transmission scheme, can examine whether we can transmit the requested video with a constant rate for a given buffer size. In this paper, we formulate off-line bandwidth smoothing into a binary classification problem of the underflow and overflow points. Then we propose a novel algorithm based on support vector machine because of its equal margin, which,we have proven, is able to minimize the required buffer size of CRTT. Our algorithm, therefore, can exactly calculate MBR together with the CRTT transmission rate without exhaustively searching buffer sizes and startup delay. The simulation results using some real MPEG4 and H.264 video show the philosophy and effectiveness of our algorithm.

For the error problem of the data processing in dynamic weighing system at present, our experiment takes two-axle vehicle and truck as the object. The collected data by singular spectrum analysis(SSA) algorithm is under preprocessing, then the peak values of the front and rear axle, the ascending slope and descending slope on the weighbridge, speed and type of vehicles, is used as input of the Learning Vector Quantization(LVQ) network, and immobile weight as the output to simulate. The results show that: the precision with proposed method is higher than traditional digital signal processing method and traditional LVQ network, and the method effectively reduces the measurement error of dynamic weighing system, and can be applied directly to dynamic weighing system. ©2009 IEEE.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer.
