In this paper, we find the best base station placement using a genetic approach. A new representation describing base station placement with a real number is proposed, and new genetic operators are introduced. This new representation can describe not only the locations of the base stations but also the number of those. Considering both coverage and economic efficiency, we also suggest a weighted objective function. Our algorithm is applied to an obvious optimization problem and then is verified. Moreover, our approach is tried in an inhomogeneous traffic density environment. The simulation result proves that the algorithm enables one to find near optimal base station placement and the efficient number of base stations.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to the high-speed wall following of wheeled mobile robots using hybrid control system. The proposed hybrid system consists of the discrete state system as the high-level process and the continuous state system as the low-level process. In discrete state system, the discrete states are defined by the user-defined constraints and the reference motion commands are specified in the abstracted motions. The reference motion commands are translated into the control inputs for each wheel in the continuous state system. The hybrid control system applied for wheeled mobile robots can combine the motion planning and autonomous navigation with obstacle avoidance in indoor navigation problem. Simulation results show that hybrid system approach is an effective method for the autonomous navigation. In the experiments of the indoor environments, we proved that the performance of the high-speed navigation is excellent.

A new reactor of SF/sub 6/ gas-insulated electromagnetic shield type for neutral grounding has been developed. This development succeeded in integrating the two functions of reactance and resistance in one reactor. The paper describes the features of the new reactor and reports the results of the magnetic field analysis together with the test results of the reactor.

Pole assignment for stochastic systems with unknown coefficients

This paper solves the exact pole assignment problem for the single-input stochastic systems with unknown coefficients under the controllability assumption which is necessary and sufficient for the arbitrary pole assignment for systems with known coefficients. The system noise is required to be mutually independent with zero mean and bounded second moment. Two approaches to solving the problem are proposed: One is the iterative learning approach which can be applied when the state at a fixed time can be repeatedly observed with different feedback gains; the other is the adaptive control approach which works when the trajectories satisfy a nondegeneracy condition. Both methods are essentially based on stochastic approximation, and the feedback gains are recursively given without invoking the certainty-equivalency-principle.

A fuzzy control based three-phase sinusoidal current control space voltage vector modulated voltage source inverter is implemented in this paper. This fuzzy controller demonstrates better dynamic response than a conventional PI controller and is chosen as a good alternative. The simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed fuzzy controller for a three-phase voltage-fed inverter with an inductive load.

Through our research, we have developed a unique, autonomous decentralized system that can be used in the water control field. In conventional control systems, certain send-and-receive functions are installed in the front-end processor (FEP) of the master station according to various properties of the information arriving from field terminals (FTs). The host computer reacts by sending control data to the FTs in accordance with the pre-installed optimum control algorithm, which receives transmitted information from the FEP. Our method intellectualizes a FT to be an intelligent field terminal (IFT) which judges the diverse information from devices of other FTs automatically and autonomously without depending on the host CPU or the FEP. The IFT provides multi-agent functions which can distinguish certain information conditions from other IFTs and can cooperate with the diverse functional agents of an IFT to resolve data conflicts among IFTs.

The C4ISR Architecture Framework document issued by the department of Defense specifies three views of an information architecture and defines a set of products that describe each view. These architecture views are to serve as the basis for C4ISR system development and acquisition. The Framework does not provide a process for architecture design. In this paper, information architectures are described in the context of Structured Analysis, and then the architecture views of the Framework and the related products are interpreted in that context. A methodology for architecture design is developed that is then implemented using Structured Analysis and object orientation in two companion papers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

We show that many open and challenging problems in control theory belong to the class of concave minimization programs. More precisely, these problems can be recast as the minimization of a concave objective function over convex linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints. In this setting, these problems can then be efficiently handled using local and/or global optimization techniques.

The paper develops a second-order Newton algorithm for finding local solutions of rank-constrained LMI problems in robust synthesis. The algorithm is based on a quadratic approximation of a suitably defined merit function and generates sequences of LMI feasible iterates. The main thrust of the algorithm is that it inherits the good local convergence properties of Newton methods and thus overcomes the difficulties encountered with earlier methods such as the Frank and Wolfe or conditional gradient methods which tend to be very slow in the neighborhood of a local solution. Moreover, it is easily implemented using available Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) codes. Proposed algorithms have proven global and local convergence properties and thus represent improvements over classically used D-K iteration schemes but also outperform earlier conditional gradient algorithms. Reported computational results demonstrate these facts.

In this paper, a pseudo measurement model is adopted to deal with the Kalman filter problem with color measurement noise. It is assumed that the measurement noise is color, and is described by an AR(n) model. The state equation is set up according to Singer's model. The measurement equation is set up in polar coordinate and the range rate measurement is combined with ordinary data (i.e., there are four measurement data: range r, azimuth /spl theta//sub a/, elevation /spl theta//sub e/ and range rate r/spl dot/). By means of proper coordinate transformation, the matrix of Kalman gain and the matrix of filter error covariance can be decoupled. Thus the computing requirement of the algorithm is reduced and can be performed in real time.
