Aspect ratio of axial field permanent magnet machines (AFPM), i.e., the ratio of axial length to diameter of machines, is a key dimensional parameter. It significantly influences the torque capability and loss performances under specific thermal constraint. This paper analytically establishes the relationship between output torque and aspect ratio, as well as other design parameters of yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) AFPM machines. The prescriptive loss conditions are established, which correspond to different thermal limitations. It is found analytically, as verified by finite element analysis, that for YASA AFPM machines, the optimal aspect ratio exists and is significantly affected by the machine size and relatively less affected by the operating speed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes an optimal transportation-power flow (OTPF) model to manage electrified transportation networks (ETNs) with dynamic wireless charging (DWC) facilities. The transportation network (TN) model, considering the road capacity drop, is adopted for traffic flow assignment. The Distflow model is used to calculate the power flow in the power distribution network (PDN). Energy storage systems (ESSs) and flexible loads (FLs) are integrated into the coordinated operation of ETNs to enhance the economy and security of the system. To address fluctuations and variations in renewable energy generation, model predictive control (MPC) is adopted. The proposed MPC-based OTPF model is formulated as a nonlinear and non-convex problem. To obtain the global optimal solution, it is further transformed into a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) problem by using second-order cone (SOC) relaxation, piecewise linearization, and the Big-M method. Case studies verify the significant influence of road capacity drop on the operation of ETNs. © 2024 IEEE.

Soft manipulators are known for their superiority in coping with high-safety-demanding interaction tasks, e.g., robot-assisted surgeries, elderly caring, etc. Yet the challenges residing in real-time contact feedback have hindered further applications in precise manipulation. This paper proposes an end-to-end network to estimate the 3D contact force of the soft robot, with the aim of enhancing its capabilities in interactive tasks. The presented method features directly utilizing monocular images fused with multidimensional actuation information as the network inputs. This approach simplifies the preprocessing of raw data compared to related studies that utilize 3D shape information for network inputs, consequently reducing configuration reconstruction errors. The unified feature representation module is devised to elevate low-dimensional features from the system's actuation signals to the same level as image features, facilitating smoother integration of multimodal information. The proposed method has been experimentally validated in the soft robot testbed, achieving satisfying accuracy in 3D force estimation (with a mean relative error of 0.84% compared to the best-reported result of 2.2% in the related works). © 2024 IEEE.

We develop a novel Maxwellian-view near-eye display design towards eyebox expansion, using a combiner of the full-color holographic optical element. Particularly, the holographic optical element aims to expand the eyebox and is fabricated using time-multiplexing exposure with RGB lasers. Leveraging a micro-projector module as the display engine, a full-color Maxwellian-view near-eye display prototype with an eyeglassstyle form factor is implemented with an expanded eyebox of 6mm×6mm. © 2023, John Wiley and Sons Inc. High permanent magnet losses of high-speed permanent-magnet synchronous motors will lead to irreversible demagnetization of permanent magnet, which has a serious impact on the motor performance. For high-speed motors, the current harmonics caused by the inverter is one of the key reasons causing permanent magnet eddy current. In this paper, the effect of different inverters on permanent magnet losses of high-speed permanent-magnet synchronous motors is investigated. Finally, the analysis is verified by the coupling simulation method. The results show that the effect of current harmonics on the permanent magnet eddy current losses can be greatly reduced when a three-level inverter is applied. Compared with a two-level inverter, the three-level inverter is more suitable for high-speed motor. © 2024 IEEE

As for the cascaded converter system, the existing grid-connected self-synchronization control methods are sensitive to grid fluctuations, which will affect the system stability and may lead to issues about the existence of equilibrium points of the system. To address these issues, this article analyzes the impact of grid voltage fluctuation on the existence of system equilibrium points. A robust decentralized self-synchronizing control method is proposed, where a voltage correction mechanism is designed to guarantee the system's equilibrium points. Besides ensuring frequency self-synchronization, the flexible adjustment abilities of output power and power factor are greatly improved. The control-hardware-in-loop and RTU-BOX-based experiment results under grid voltage fluctuation and load changing show that the system has good disturbance rejection capability and robust performance. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Hybrid Renewable Power systems (HRPSs) have been extensively employed at regional, national, and different levels due to their capability of decreasing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions and reducing energy consumption amount. However, the main challenge of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) is the uncertainties of the demand and source integration that may be addressed by nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms. The optimal operation of a Microgrid (MG) includes Photovoltaic (PV), Wind Turbine (WT), and Battery (BT), as integrated sources for the distributed generation system. This paper proposes the utilization of the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) in order to overcome sizing limitations. The aforesaid optimization algorithm benchmarked with the Antlion Optimization (ALO) algorithm that coupled with a supervisory control algorithm called energy management strategy to meet the objective functions. The main objectives of this study are to obtain a hybrid system with lower cost and lower reliability. The results of the system show better performance on WOA as the main findings in terms of cost (0.01/kWh) and LPSP (0.08%). The aforementioned result contributes a cost-effective system with lower loss, and providing sustainable living which means electricity is available most of the time. © 2024 IEEE.

Partial Point Cloud Registration With Deep Local Feature

How to accurately register partial point cloud still remains a challenging task, because of its irregular and unordered structure in a non-Euclidean space, noise, outliers, and other unfavorable factors. In this article, an effective partial point cloud registration network is proposed by devising a two-stage deep local feature extraction process and an outlier filtering strategy. To be specific, on the one hand, to effectively capture geometric interdependency in the low-level space, a local attention feature extraction module is explored to extract local contextual attention features by highlighting different attention weights on neighborhoods. On the other hand, in the local feature aggregation module, two position encoding blocks are applied to increase the receptive field of each point in the high-level space. Of these, an attentive pooling can automatically learn important local features to alleviate the possible information loss. Furthermore, to derive the weight of the putative correspondence, an outlier filtering module is designed by consisting of point context normalization block, differentiable pooling layer, and differentiable unpooling layer. Moreover, in order to enhance robustness, a weighting point cloud registration model is formulated to alleviate outliers by considering the contribution of each correspondence. Experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach is competitive to several state-of-the-art algorithms. © 2020 IEEE.

This article addresses the issue of commutation failure in high-voltage direct current transmission systems based on the line-commutated converter (LCC) topology. It proposes a solution using a hybrid commutated converter (HCC) topology based on reverse-blocking integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) devices to mitigate commutation failures. Firstly, it introduces the mechanism of commutation failure in LCC and discusses in detail the process and factors that contribute to commutation failure. Next, it analyzes the principles behind HCC's enhanced commutation capabilities, which are achieved by utilizing IGCTs with faster reverse recovery speeds, allowing for a smaller minimum extinction angle. Finally, the article conducts simulation analyses on two critical operating conditions: insufficient extinction time and grid undervoltage. The results demonstrate that HCC on the inverter side can increase the commutation margin and significantly reduce the risk of commutation failure, validating the effectiveness of HCC in suppressing DC commutation failures. © 2023 IEEE.
