Identifying the service to be connected from an IP flow is beneficial for various applications, and a method of identifying the service based on the SNIs occurring in the flow was proposed. It was also shown that the identification accuracy could be improved by excluding some SNIs from those for identification. However, no discussion has been published on the probability of SNIs occurring in actual service accesses. In this paper, we compare the probability of occurrence of each SNI in each service and show that there are redundant SNIs whose probabilities are the same, and there is one SNI that occurs in all services with similar probabilities and is not useful for service identification. We then show that identification accuracy can be improved by excluding the SNI that occurs in all services from the service identification data.

Integrating optical diffraction tomography with imaging flow cytometry enables label-free quantifications of the three-dimensional (3D) morphology and hemoglobin content of red blood cells (RBCs) in their natural form. Self-rotation of RBCs flowing in a microfluidic channel has been utilized to achieve various projection directions for 3D reconstruction. However, the practicality of this technique has not been sufficiently studied. We improved the accuracy of estimating the rotation angle of RBCs and demonstrated 3D reconstructions of both healthy and glutaraldehyde-treated RBCs. Results showed the capability to quantify changes in RBC morphology, hemoglobin content, and membrane fluctuations generated by glutaraldehyde treatments, demonstrating the potential to detect changes frequently present in various RBC membrane disorders. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Exoskeletons are wearable mechanisms which, parallel to the wearer’s joints, modulate movements through active or passive torque application. While existing upper-limb exoskeletons offer benefits in strength augmentation and therapy, they often suffer from limited degrees of freedom and excessive bulk, hindering their utility in neuromotor rehabilitation. This study introduces a three degree-of-freedom active upper-limb exoskeleton optimized for neuromotor rehabilitation. Employing anthropometric data and rigorous kinematic analysis, the design accommodates elbow flexion/extension, forearm pronation/supination, and hand gripping. The upper limb dynamics, kinematics, and physiology were evaluated to provide adequate joint ranges of motion. Cable-driven actuators in the elbow and forearm joints were designed to provide low worn weight through the relocation of the motor units away from the user’s joints. The result is a lightweight, compact exoskeleton that provides optimal conditions for neuromotor rehabilitation. Finally, a preliminary control strategy was tested using myoelectric signals to trigger motion.

Microstructuring of cobalt (Co) thin films by UV laser irradiation

This work reports the microstructuring of cobalt (Co) thin films by high-energy UV pulsed laser irradiation. The parameters responsible for the efficient formation of such microstructures include laser fluence and film parameters. Cracks and island formations were observed for Co thin films deposited by RF sputtering. Such rough films rendered to produce inefficient microstructuring. To overcome this limitation, Co thin films were deposited by vacuum evaporation resulting in a smooth thin film compatible for laser-induced microstructuring. Two stages of conical patterning are discussed in terms of localized melting and abrupt condensation of the melted Co film owing to laser irradiation. An efficiency of 90% for laser-based microstructuring suggests that it is an efficient and non-invasive technique for fabricating nanostructures. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE part of Springer Nature.

This paper investigates the noise induced from EFT Burst transient IEC61000-4-4 on the chip and package levels and analyzes its degradation effect. We first introduce the EFT Burst transient generator model previously established published with ANSYS Designer, which has later been adopted into ANSYS electronics Desktop serving for immunity effect and protection measure analysis. We then describe how electromagnetic simulations can provide chip-level immunity analysis for IEC 62215-3. The analysis of EFT pulse propagation can be extended to package level with its impact on clock waveforms of different frequencies. With the help of established model, the residual transient noise energy due to normally found decoupling capacitor will be observed to show its effectiveness on noise filtering and the significant benefits to EMS protection. This study intends to provide an efficient simulation model to help IC and package designers enhancing their design capability against EFT disturbance. © 2022 IEEE.

Electric Arc Furnace and Ladle Furnace transformers are very important in steel production industry. The overvoltages caused by vacuum circuit breaker during operation are very repetitive and can lead to failures and, consequently, large financial losses. The use of protection devices, as RC filters and surge arresters, can attenuate theses transient overvoltages. However, the clamping of one of the circuit breaker phases, which is a common event to occur in a system like this, can cause failure to one of the phases of the transformer protection system, due to ferroresonance effect. Operation of this transformer without one of the phases of the RC filter and surge arrest will likely lead it to failure after repetitive overvoltages. This paper presents the study and analysis of the cause of insulation failure in a no-load Ladle Furnace (LF) transformer caused by overvoltages during vacuum circuit breaker switching transients and by ferroresonance effects. The system of a real steel mill is modelled and will be used to perform simulations in Simulink/Matlab.

With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, unmanned vehicle swarms have received great attention from both academia and industry due to their potential to provide services that are difficult and dangerous to perform by humans. However, learning and coordinating movements and actions for a large number of unmanned vehicles in complex and dynamic environments introduce significant challenges to conventional AI methods. Generative AI (GAI), with its capabilities in complex data feature extraction, transformation, and enhancement, offers great potential in solving these challenges of unmanned vehicle swarms. For that, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on applications, challenges, and opportunities of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms. Specifically, we first present an overview of unmanned vehicles and unmanned vehicle swarms as well as their use cases and existing issues. Then, an in-depth background of various GAI techniques together with their capabilities in enhancing unmanned vehicle swarms are provided. After that, we present a comprehensive review on the applications and challenges of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms with various insights and discussions. Finally, we highlight open issues of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms and discuss potential research directions. © 2024, CC BY.

Enhancing Fairness and Efficiency in Pv Energy Curtailment: The Role of East-West Facing Bifacial Installations in Radial Distribution Networks

Reforms in power sector, combined with the cost-competitiveness of solar-based resources, have significantly increased residential solar PV energy in electricity markets. However, the growing integration of PV presents challenges for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) due to limitations in managing reverse power flows within distribution networks. This often results in the curtailment of surplus PV energy from households, particularly affecting those connected to downstream buses during high solar generation periods. In response, this study proposes the installation of vertical set of east-west facing bifacial PV (BiE and BiW), characterized by two power peaks during morning and evening periods, as a strategy to minimize curtailment and promote fairness in energy curtailment within radial distribution networks. To assess their effectiveness, curtailed and sellable energy outputs of the bifacial systems were compared with those of traditional mono-facial south-facing PV installations across a range of capacities from 1 kW to 20 kW using load flow simulations. Additionally, fairness in energy curtailment was assessed at a 10 kW capacity using three metrics: Jain Fairness Index, Gini Index, and Curtailment Index. Simulated results show that BiE and BiW installations, especially at higher capacities, not only generate more energy but also manage curtailment more efficiently. Fairness plots confirmed that these systems maintain equitable energy distribution across varying solar intensities. At a 10 kW capacity on the day of highest curtailment, BiE and BiW increased bid energies by 815 kWh and 787 kWh, respectively, while reducing curtailed energy 1566 kWh and 1499 kWh. On the lowest curtailment day considering BiE configuration, BiE and BiW installations reduced curtailed energy by 956 kWh and 783 kWh respectively, though bid energy decreased by 1449 kWh and 935 kWh. This paper introduces a novel forecastings technique based on randomized fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM), called LRHFCM (or large reservoir of randomized high-order FCM) for predicting univariate time series. LR-HFCM is a hybrid method combining fuzzy time series (FTS), FCMs, and reservoir computing. It is a type of echo state network (ESN) consisting of the input layer, intermediate (or large reservoir) layer, and output layer, where LASSO regression is applied to train the output layer. The novelty of this approach is that the internal layer includes a very large reservoir, considering different combinations from the sets of concepts and order using a certain number of sub-reservoirs to capture different dynamics of input time series. It is important to highlight that the weights within each sub-reservoir are chosen randomly and remain constant throughout the training process. The validity of the LR-HFCM approach is evaluated across 15 different time series datasets. The results highlight the outperformance of the LR-HFCM technique in comparison to various baseline models.

In recent years, the GAA NS Si MOSFET has been explored as a leading technology. However, the intrinsic parameters of GAA NS Si MOSFETs are affected to varying degrees by various fluctuation sources, Statistically independent and identically distributed $(iid)$ assumptions on the aforementioned random variables overestimate the variability of high-frequency characteristics, compared with considering all fluctuation factors simultaneously. Notably, the random nanosized metal grains dominates the variations of voltage gain, cut-off frequency, and 3dB frequency because the random work functions strongly alter the channel surface potential.
