This research paper introduces a perspective for the design of a power converter to test batteries and evaluate their performance under realistic operational conditions based on sinusoidal ripple current. A design of a mission profile emulator (MPE) is proposed to generate battery test scenarios by implementing signals from real-world applications, such as a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) or a single-phase inverter. The proposed MPE is based on a synchronous buck converter in conventional and interleaved versions. The proposal is validated through PLECS simulations and Hardware-in-the-Ioop (HIL) experiments. The research investigates the relationship between control bandwidth and harmonic tracking capability for emulation purposes. This analysis centers on optimizing the converter design and enhancing comprehension of the battery's behavior, particularly when the current exhibits sinusoidal components. HIL experiments explore four distinct scenarios, illustrating behavior in simple buck converter systems and demonstrating bandwidth extension and ripple reduction in interleaved systems. The study validates these findings by examining Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and current ripple across various conditions.

This paper proposes a new three-phase AC-DC isolated rectifier topology with zero-voltage switching capability. The structure is obtained by adding a single transformer that is excited by the common-mode voltage generated by the three-leg converter. It is presented an analysis of the converter's operation, covering modulation concepts and control strategies to maintain the output voltage at the desired value and guarantee unity power factor and very low total harmonic distortions. The experimental results is obtained over a 1kW prototype which provides a power factor of 0.99 and efficiency of 91.7%. The full results are presented and discussed to validate the proposed converter topology.

Large AC motors are ubiquitous in the mining industry, and these often require medium-voltage (MV) converters. Generally, long cables provide the connection between the variable speed drive (VSD) and the motor, which increases problems involving high frequency currents and overvoltages. These undesired phenomena are attenuated by large, heavy and expensive inverter output filters. As an alternative solution to such problems, the authors have proposed, in previous works, the separation of the frequency converter into its rectifier and inverter units, where the rectifier remains in its original location and the inverter is placed beside the motor, thus establishing a DC transmission link through the long cable. Such a configuration naturally (i) mitigates the high-frequency phenomena, (ii) reduces the voltage drop along the cable, and (Hi) can result in substantial copper savings. Until the present moment, the evaluations performed on the proposed topology was aimed at low voltage mining applications, which have shown excellent results. However, since MV drive systems are common in the mining industry, the proposed drive topology should also be analyzed considering this application. In this way, this paper evaluates the copper and energy savings obtained through this alternative drive topology by means of a case study involving three MV motor drive systems situated in a mining plant.

Analytical Solution of Poisson’s Equation with Application to VLSI Global Placement

Poisson’s equation has been used in VLSI global placement for describing the potential field caused by a given charge density distribution. Unlike previous global placement methods that solve Poisson’s equation numerically, in this paper, we provide an analytical solution of the equation to calculate the potential energy of an electrostatic system. The analytical solution is derived based on the separation of variables method and an exact density function to model the block distribution in the placement region, which is an infinite series and converges absolutely. Using the analytical solution, we give a fast computation scheme of Poisson’s equation and develop an effective and efficient global placement algorithm called Pplace. Experimental results show that our Pplace achieves smaller placement wirelength than ePlace and NTUplace3. With the pervasive applications of Poisson’s equation in scientific fields, in particular, our effective, efficient, and robust computation scheme for its analytical solution can provide substantial impacts on these fields. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Robots that operate autonomously require a path planner that ensures the robot reaches the desired position in a safe manner. The robot will be able to achieve greater speeds along the path if the path is smooth, minimizing the effort of the controller. This work presents two new path planners, called DE-Spline and DE-NURBS. These planners provide a smooth path directly by the cost function optimization using the algorithm L-SHADE (Success-History based Adaptive of Differential Evolution using linear population size reduction algorithm) and two path’s parametrization: Ferguson cubic spline and NURBS. Additionally, it ensures that the robot reaches the target in the desired orientation. The planners are compared with a Vector Field-based planner, widely used in robot soccer. Based on the results, it has been found that both planners provide a smoother path along the shortest path, by accounting for the robot’s starting angle and its goal angle. Furthermore, DE-NURBS provides a greater degree of planning freedom than DESpline.

Lower-limb exoskeletons have been effectively used in rehabilitation to reduce gait impairments. However, making the exoskeleton transparent to provide suitable net interaction torques and assist patient’s movements is yet an open challenge. In this study, we designed a torque control method based on adaptive oscillators (AOs) to reduce interaction forces with a six degree-of-freedom exoskeleton, named the ExoRoboWalker. A synchronization layer was designed with a pool of AOs to estimate user’s gait phase, and a baseline torque controller was introduced to generate a torque profile based on user-robot interaction during the previous gait cycles. A zero-torque controller was used in parallel to the main torque controller with the objective of improving users’ control of the system and their balance. The proposed controller was experimentally evaluated in six healthy subjects who walked with the exoskeleton for 200 gait strides at different walking speeds. A transparent controller we previously implemented based on a zero-impedance model was also evaluated and results were compared with the new controller. The controller based on AOs was able to reduce the average interaction torques by 40% at the highest gait speed of 0.8 m/s relative to the zero-impedance controller we previously implemented.

This paper proposes an alternative detection frame-work for multiple sclerosis (MS) and idiopathic acute transverse myelitis (ATM) within the 6G-enabled Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) environment. The developed framework relies on the implementation of a deep learning technique known as Dense Convolutional Networks (DenseNets) in the 6G-enabled IoMT to enhance prediction performance. To validate the performance of DenseNets, we compared it with other deep learning techniques, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and MobileNet, using real-world datasets. The experimental results show the high performance of DenseNets in predicting MS and ATM compared to other methods, achieving an accuracy of nearly 90 %.

In the digital transformation era, Metaverse offers a fusion of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and web technologies to create immersive digital experiences. However, the evolution of the Metaverse is slowed down by the challenges of content creation, scalability, and dynamic user interaction. Our study investigates an integration of Mixture of Experts (MoE) models with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) for mobile edge computing to revolutionize content creation and interaction in the Metaverse. Specifically, we harness an MoE model's ability to efficiently manage complex data and complex tasks by dynamically selecting the most relevant experts running various sub-models to enhance the capabilities of GAI. We then present a novel framework that improves video content generation quality and consistency, and demonstrate its application through case studies. Our findings underscore the efficacy of MoE and GAI integration to redefine virtual experiences by offering a scalable, efficient pathway to harvest the Metaverse's full potential. © 2024, CC BY.

Language equations are a powerful tool for compositional synthesis, modeled as the unknown component problem. Given a (sequential) system specification S and a fixed component F, we are asked to synthesize an unknown component X such that whose composition with F fulfills S. The synthesis of X can be formulated with language equation solving. Although prior work exploits partitioned representation for effective finite automata manipulation, it remains challenging to solve language equations involving a large number of states. In this work, we propose variants of Boolean automata as the underlying succinct representation for regular languages. They admit logic circuit manipulation and extend the scalability for solving language equations. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method to the state-of-the-art in solving nine more cases out of the 36 studied benchmarks and achieving an average of 740× speedup.
