Multilevel power converters have been aim of research in the last years due to their advantages when compared to traditional two-level topologies: better harmonic performance, filters reduction, lower components voltage stress and higher power process capability. Following this trend, the present work proposes two SEPIC DC-DC converters composed of multilevel flying capacitor asymmetric totem-pole switching cell. These structures are achieved by replacing one leg of switch/diode of the traditional two-level asymmetric totem-pole cell by a similar multilevel flying capacitor cell. An operation analysis of the proposed converter is presented, as well as hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation results to validate the theoretical approach.

This paper proposes a new control design method via two techniques to decrease the conservativeness in control design conditions for Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems that can represent a wide class of nonlinear systems. The first technique we employ is to use higher order derivatives of Lyapunov function that is shown to reduce the conservativeness in the literature. The second one is a switching approach that takes advantages of a property of the membership function. In this paper, we provide control design methods and their less conservative conditions based on the above-mentioned techniques. The proposed control design conditions are independent of the membership function and are written in a linear matrix inequality form. Finally, Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methods by comparing with the existing methods.

Universities can employ information technology as one means of achieving their goals and objectives. Universities can get advantages from information technology, such as effective resource management and information management for decision-making. However, don't forget that the campus must consider what technology is appropriate to assist them achieve their goals, particularly in the current industrial era 4.0 where technology is available with many different choices. The campus requires an enterprise architecture in order to design, manage, and coordinate information technology infrastructure, applications, and processes strategically and thoroughly. The adoption of enterprise information system architecture (EA) is also intended to improve the quality of services provided to internal and external stakeholders. In this case, Enterprise Architecture can help an organization to match its information technology resources with business processes and strategies to achieve their goals. This research was conducted using TOGAF ADM, also known as the Open Group Architecture Framework Architecture Development Method. This method offers best practices for creating enterprise architecture and emphasizes several steps that include creating an architectural vision, information systems, business architecture modeling to help XYZ campus manage all their information technology. © 2023 IEEE.

Multilevel inverters have great scope in current developments of grid-connected solar PV systems. Two-level inverters are the simplest kind of multilevel inverter available (MLI). As the number of output levels is raised, the total harmonic distortion decreases. In classic MLI topologies, more electronic components are utilized to get higher-level outputs, which raise the cost, complexity, and volume of typical MLI installations. By reducing the design components, the cost of the system will be reduced. Furthermore, the two- and three-level inverters produce constant dv/dt output, which increases the stress on the power switches. This research proposes an asymmetric MLI topology that is suitable for PV applications and utilizes less number of DC sources and switches. The proposed inverter is controlled by selective harmonic elimination-based pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) to eliminate the lower-order dominant harmonics. The nonlinear equations produced by the SHEPWM are solved for the switching angles of the proposed inverter using the Newton-Raphson (NR) method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for various modulation indexes. The performance of the proposed inverter is analyzed based on the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output for different operating levels of the inverter by comparing similar topologies in the literature. The THD obtained by the NR method is 7.3% and by using PSO is 4.23% at 0.9 modulation index. © 2023 Devineni Gireesh Kumar et al.

Purpose: Some factors such as gender, age, physical fitness, and manual dominance are relevant and can influence the recognition of movement patterns using electromyography (EMG). In this scenario, we present an EMG signal analysis for men and women to observe if there is any significant difference. Methods: Data from 10 men and 10 women were acquired during the execution of six hand gestures (wrist flexion, wrist extension, wrist flexion to left, wrist extension to right, supination, and pronation) using eight channels armband. Four EMG time-domain signal features were extracted and hand gestures were classified using linear and quadratic discriminant analysis (LDA, QDA), and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithms. Results: Data of the feature difference absolute standard deviation value (DASDV) and waveform length (WL) were analyzed based on polar and bar graphs. KNN with 1 nearest neighbor obtained the best results between the classifiers for both men and women. For statistical analyses, the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Tukey post hoc in Friedman tests were used. The results show that there is no significant difference between data from different genders. Conclusion: After analyzing the results obtained and extensive comparison with related works, it was concluded that, for the conditions where the electrodes are positioned equidistantly, evaluating all the muscular groups of a limb (armband format), there was no significant difference observed between the data from different genders. In addition, this allows us to conclude that EMG armband on the forearm can be a good option for robotic systems control without the need for prior gender adjustment. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are crucial for microgrids, enhancing dynamic performance and mitigating uncertainties inherent to isolated environments characterized by intermittent power generation. When microgrid is supplied by wind power in connection with BESS, the bidirectional DC-DC converter associated with BESS assumes a critical responsibility—ensuring the control of a wind power supplied DC-link. This permits the Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) to synthesize consistent voltages for the connected AC load. However, challenges emerge, particularly in arduous stress on switches of the bidirectional converter attributed to elevated current ripple. This stress does not only prejudice the overall system’s functioning but can also potentially leading it to shutdown in case of switch failure. Traditionally, the conventional buck-boost converter topology has been the go-to choice for this application, nevertheless, exploring novel converter topologies, such as interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter (IBDC) has garnered attention, promising enhanced performance. This paper’s goal is to conduct a comparative analysis of the operation of these converters in an islanded microgrid supplied by a single Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG) small-scale wind turbine with a BESS system. Load variation with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) operation of the PMSG is performed during MATLAB/Simulink environment simulations. The results suggest significant advantages for the interleaved three-phase converter, such as reduced battery charging current ripple, switch disturbance, and voltage ripple in the DC-link.

Single-image shadow removal aims to remove undesired shadow information from captured images. With the development of deep convolutional neural networks, several methods have been proposed to achieve promising performance in shadow removal. However, they still struggle with limited performance due to the non-homogeneous intensity distribution of the shadow. To address this issue, we propose a two-stage shadow removal architecture based on the transformer called TSRFormer. The proposed architecture is divided into shadow removal and content refinement networks. These two stages adopt different transformer architectures and remove the shadow based on different information to achieve effective shadow removal. Experiments performed on challenging benchmark show that the proposed model achieves the 2 nd highest SSIM in the NTIRE 2023 Image Shadow Removal Challenge. The source code will be public after the acceptance of this paper.

Improving the area scalability and reducing the process temperature of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) ferroelectric (FE) capacitors are two of the most critical challenges in future back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible FE memories. This paper presents the first study demonstrating the existence of a tradeoff between the area scalability and the annealing temperature, suggesting that these two should be optimized simultaneously rather than separately. Optimizing the HZO thickness and Hf:Zr ratio are identified to improve the tradeoff. High remanent polarization density of 24 µC/cm2 and excellent endurance of 9×109 cycles are achieved in a scaled FE area as small as 0.6×0.6 µm2 by using the BEOL-compatible 400°C annealing. © 2022 IEEE.

Among the main techniques for detecting and classifying partial discharges in high-voltage equipment currently studied, the radiometric method stands out, based on the application of UHF sensors. However, using UHF sensors for partial discharge detection requires the use of sophisticated acquisition systems, meaning robust systems with high sampling rates and processing capacity. In this context, the use of VHF sensors for partial discharge detection and classification shows great promise. Utilizing a frequency range lower than UHF allows for a decrease in the resources required for detection and processing of the electromagnetic signals produced by partial discharges. This study evaluates the application of VHF sensors for partial discharge detection in high-voltage equipment, aiming to reduce the acquisition and processing requirements necessary for partial discharge monitoring.

Currently, developments in mechatronics have enabled the creation of compliant actuators and synthetic muscles, surpassing the constraints of inflexible actuators in assistive robotics systems. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are comprised of an elastomer layer situated amidst two flexible electrodes, able to change dimensions under the influence of an electric voltage. While DEAs can function as autonomous sensors due to their viscoelastic behavior, accurately measuring actuator displacement continues to be an unresolved challenge. In this study, we introduce the development and assessment of a fiber-constrained dielectric elastomer actuator (FCDEA) with embedded optical fiber sensors for displacement measurement through optical potential difference. The DEAs were fabricated with VHB 4910, conductive carbon grease, and PETG as constrain fiber to restrict its displacement to the vertical direction. Silica optical fiber was integrated in the PETG strips and clamps to measure the actuator deformation upon activation. Different fabrication parameters of DEAs were investigated to obtain greater strain rates. DEAs with 90 mm x 90 mm, stretch (λ) = 3.6, and load (τ) = 120 kPa, and 90 mm x 110 mm, λ=3.6, and τ=120 kPa, presented the highest deformation capacity, with 90% and 80%, respectively. Moreover, results showed great linearity between the DEA deformation and optical potential, indicating the proposed configuration is suitable for displacement measurement.
