This work describes the investigation of planar waveguide crossings using metaheuristic methods associated with the two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM). An optimization and measurement process are performed on the power transmission and crosstalk of the waveguide crossings and then the values calculated are compared with other studies in the literature. The best performing adjusted crossing is optimally designed by applying the following metaheuristics: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and a hybrid algorithm combining the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure and Simulated Annealing (GRASP-SA). Transmission efficiency results higher than 97% and crosstalk below the -50 dB over a wide wavelength range, with a footprint of $\mathbf{4.9}\times \mathbf{4.9}\ \boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{m}^{\mathbf{2}}$ .

Battery energy storage system (BESS) has been highlighted for its possibilities of performing ancillary services to the power system, such as voltage and frequency regulation, power quality, power smoothing, and peak shaving, among others. The BESS is very promising especially associated with renewable energies, such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind. Among some of these ancillary services, this work evaluates the battery lifetime and reliability. The proposed methodology includes the combined analysis of rainflow counting algorithm, Monte Carlo simulation, and nonlinear damage accumulation rule for battery reliability assessment. Monte Carlo simulation is used to approximate the battery reliability estimation of practical applications, by considering stochastic variations in the battery lifetime model. The case study is based on a 100 $\textbf{kW}$ PV system, assessed using a one-year mission profile of solar irradiance and ambient temperature from Goiânla-Brazll associated with a mission profile of 100 $\textbf{kW}$ industrial load. The PV plant is connected to a 440 V grid associated with a BESS that mitigates oscillations of 10% of PV nominal power per minute. The peak shaving service presented a decrease in the battery lifetime by approximately 11 % in relation to the deterministic battery lifetime analysis. On the other hand, the peak shaving presented a decrease in the battery lifetime by approximately 17.4 %. In addition, the pack-level analysis revealed a maximum reduction in the battery lifetime by approximately 30%, when compared to the conventional deterministic battery reliability estimation procedure.

We have developed a technique that dramatically reduces the contact resistances and depletes a shunting channel between the contacts outside the Hall bar in ultra-high mobility SiGe/Si/SiGe heterostructures. It involves the creation of three overlapping independent gates deposited on top of the structure and allows transport measurements to be performed at millikelvin temperatures in the strongly interacting limit at low electron densities, where the energy of the electron-electron interactions dominates all other energy scales. This design allows one to observe the two-threshold voltage-current characteristics that are a signature for the collective depinning and sliding of the electron solid. © 2024, CC BY.

SecureTVM: A TVM-based Compiler Framework for Selective Privacy-preserving Neural Inference

Privacy-preserving neural inference helps protect both the user input data and the model weights from being leaked to others during the inference of a deep learning model. To achieve data protection, the inference is often performed within a secure domain, and the final result is revealed in plaintext. Nevertheless, performing the computations in the secure domain incurs about a thousandfold overhead compared with the insecure version, especially when the involved operations of the entire model are mapped to the secure domain, which is the computation scheme adopted by the existing works. This work is inspired by the transfer learning technique, where the weights of some parts of the model layers are transferred from a publicly available, pre-built deep learning model, and it opens a door to further boost the execution efficiency by allowing us to do the secure computations selectively on parts of the transferred model. We have built a compiler framework, SecureTVM, to automatically translate a trained model into the secure version, where the model layers to be protected can be selectively configured by its model provider. As a result, SecureTVM outperforms the state of the art, CrypTFlow2, by a factor of 55 for the transfer learning model. We believe that this work takes a step forward toward the practical uses of privacy-preserving neural inference for real-world applications. © 2023 Association for Computing Machinery.

Exponential Curve-Based Control Strategy for Auxiliary Equipment Power Supply Systems in Railways

An exponential curve-based (ECB) control strategy has been proposed in this paper. The proposed ECB control strategy is based on the growth and decay of charge in the series RC circuit and the harmonic elimination by detecting the Fourier expansion series of the auxiliary equipment power supply system’s (AEPSS) three-phase output voltage level. It can quickly adjust each duty cycle to the best value for driving the isolated three-phase inverter (ITPI) and produce a three-phase 380 VAC/60 Hz output. A comparison of the AEPSS output performance using the traditional voltage cancellation method (VCM) and the proposed ECB control strategy was performed. The hardware implementation of the system was performed on the prototype developed in the laboratory. These control strategies are tested under three conditions, i.e., (i) Vi = 550 VDC. (ii) Vi = 750 VDC. (iii) Vi = 800 VDC. The total harmonic distortion (THD) is 13.7%, 14.5%, and 14.9%, and the output voltage Vo is 372.3 VAC, 377.3 VAC, and 385.3 VAC using the traditional control strategy at three test conditions, respectively. However, the THD is 7.2%, 7.8%, and 8.0%, and the output voltage Vo is 382.2 VAC, 381.2 VAC, and 381.9 VAC using the proposed ECB control strategy under the test conditions. It is obvious from the hardware results that the output voltage harmonics and output voltage level for the proposed ECB control strategy are superior to the traditional VCM. The voltage produced from the AEPSS using the proposed ECB control strategy is more stable and has better quality. In addition, the filter size is also reduced. © 2023 by the authors.

In mobile robotics, an essential requirement for the fusion of different sensors is that measurements are expressed with respect to the same reference. In this sense, the transformation between sensors and robot is necessary to ensure better sensor fusion. Therefore, this article proposes an extrinsic sensor calibration based on markers and associated to three orthogonal planes. This technique is applied to two calibration approaches, LiDAR-Robot and LiDAR-Camera. The first one calculates the transformation between a 3D LiDAR sensor and a robot, and the second system calculates the transformation between a 3D LiDAR and an embedded RGB camera. To demonstrate the efficiency of our method, we performed simulations on the CoppeliaSim simulator and experiments in the laboratory. Then, the results show that it is possible to calibrate the sensors with the methodologies.

Path planning is a crucial part of autonomous navigation when regarding autonomous aerial vehicles, often demanding different priorities such as the length, safety or energy consumption. Dynamic programming and geometric methods have been applied to solve this problem, but in recent years, more work has been developed using artificial intelligence approaches, such as reinforcement learning. In this paper we propose an offline path planning method for static environments using Q-learning. An optimal policy is found weighting three important factors: path length, safety and energy consumption. Due to a well balanced exploring/exploiting ratio, the proposed method can lead the agent to the desired destination starting from anywhere in the map. Simulations are done in different scenarios to address the performance of the proposed method and it showcased that the algorithm is able to find feasible paths in each scenario while regarding different set of priorities.

The growing use of 3D point cloud data in autonomous vehicles (AVs) has raised serious privacy concerns, particularly due to the sensitive information that can be extracted from 3D data. While model inversion attacks have been widely studied in the context of 2D data, their application to 3D point clouds remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, we present the first in-depth study of model inversion attacks aimed at restoring 3D point cloud scenes. Our analysis reveals the unique challenges, the inherent sparsity of 3D point clouds and the ambiguity between empty and non-empty voxels after voxelization, which are further exacerbated by the dispersion of non-empty voxels across feature extractor layers. To address these challenges, we introduce ConcreTizer, a simple yet effective model inversion attack designed specifically for voxel-based 3D point cloud data. ConcreTizer incorporates Voxel Occupancy Classification to distinguish between empty and non-empty voxels and Dispersion-Controlled Supervision to mitigate non-empty voxel dispersion. Extensive experiments on widely used 3D feature extractors and benchmark datasets, such as KITTI and Waymo, demonstrate that ConcreTizer concretely restores the original 3D point cloud scene from disrupted 3D feature data. Our findings highlight both the vulnerability of 3D data to inversion attacks and the urgent need for robust defense strategies. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The significant increase in the number of IoT devices has also brought with it various security concerns. The ability of these devices to collect a lot of data, including personal information, is one of the important reasons for these concerns. The integration of machine learning into systems that can detect security vulnerabilities has been presented as an effective solution in the face of these concerns. In this review, it is aimed to examine the machine learning algorithms used in the current studies in the literature for IoT network security. Based on the authors' previous research in physical layer security, this research also aims to investigate the intersecting lines between upper layers of security and physical layer security. To achieve this, the current state of the area is presented. Then, relevant studies are examined to identify the key challenges and research directions as an initial overview within the authors' ongoing project.

In recent years, the aging of society has become a serious problem, especially in developed countries. Walking is an important factor in improving the quality of life of not only the elderly but also young and healthy people of all ages. Against this background, an insole-type device that can control the ankle joint angle during heel contact was developed. The heel part of the device is tilted to the right by the rotation of a stepping motor, and the inertial sensor inside the device maintains the heel in a horizontal position at all times. In this study, we focus on the effects of using this device on muscle activity. Therefore, it is verified by analyzing the timing of the maximum exertion of the peroneus longus muscle in five healthy male subjects during foot-stomping motion using a surface electromyography system. The experimental results showed that the timing of the peroneus longus muscle exertion was improved by foot stomping with the proposed device compared to normal walking.
