Versatile Video Coding (H.266/VVC) is the newest video coding standard jointly developed by the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET), which is organized by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). H.266/VVC provides about 40% bitrate reduction compared with High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC) for the same visual quality. This paper introduces in detail the core structure of H.266/VVC by highlighting its features within block partitioning structure, intra/inter prediction, transform, quantization, and in-loop filtering, compared to its predecessor (H.265/HEVC). H.266/VVC yields significantly improved the coding performance, but it increased the computational complexity, particularly for the encoder side, which remains a problem to be tackled for successful commercialization in the future. This paper examined the statistical performance of H.266/VVC coding tools from the bitstreams encoded by the VVC test model (VTM12.0) encoder through rate-distortion optimization under the JVET common test conditions. In addition, the complexity and performance analyses are conducted on the block partitioning structure and group of picture structure. It is expected that an optimized H.266/VVC encoder can be designed and developed by minimizing the coding loss based on the analysis data. © 2023 Institute of electronics and Information Engineers. The electrification of offshore oil and gas platforms (OOGPs), using offshore wind turbines, is now a reality, aimed at minimizing carbon emissions. In this scenario, the utilization of battery energy storage systems (BESS) improves both efficiency and power quality. As this integration comes with a high CAPEX, industries demand exploring BESS for multiple ancillary services on OOGPs. Thus, this paper proposes an alternative approach to energizing a power transformer (PT) using the BESS power conversion system (PCS) on the platform, aiming to minimize inrush currents. This avoids the necessity for additional bulky devices, converters, or dc voltage sources specifically designated for this purpose. The strategy consists of manipulating residual core flux using BESS PCS followed by a controlled switching, which reduces inrush currents during PT energization. The results show effective reduction of the inrush current from 2.31 pu to 0.16 pu for the presented case study. © 2024 IEEE.

With the advancement of semiconductor technologies, the need for efficient power management solutions in integrated systems, such as RISC-V architecture-based microcontrollers, becomes increasingly critical. However, there is a lack of studies comparing current reference architectures in terms of performance and robustness, particularly in 22nm technologies. In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of two current reference designs implemented in the same technology-referred to as Reference Design A and Reference Design B. We focus on their approaches to thermal compensation, supply stability, and layout optimizations. Through simulations and experimental tests, we evaluate the performance of each design within a power management system that includes DC-DC converters and LDO regulators. Our results indicate that Design A exhibits superior power supply rejection with a PSRR of -85 dB, while Design B demonstrates enhanced energy efficiency and thermal stability, achieving a nominal current of 5.14 μA and a temperature coefficient of 16.21 ppm. These findings underscore the importance of balancing energy efficiency, thermal stability, and power supply variation rejection when selecting current references for low-power, high-reliability applications, such as those in the Internet of Things (IoT). © 2025 IEEE.

Diagnosing and tracing of neurological disorders using Electrencephalography (EEG) signals is a promising and popular approach. For analyzing the EEG signals, time-frequency (TF) analysis is effective and useful method because of the stochastic behavior of the signals. Wavelet Transform (WT) was used broadly for analyzing the EEG signals and successful results were reported for various neurological disorders. As a new and promising TF method, concentration of frequency and time (ConceFT) was preferred to use in this study. This new TF method improves the TF resolution obtained using WT. ConceFT combines the multitaper technique and the synchrosqueezing transform (SST). This approach increases the TF resolution and the accuracy of the energy representation. In this paper, an algorithm designed for distinguishing the stages of epileptic seizure using ConceFT was presented. TF images of EEG signals were produced using ConceFT and these images were fed into SqueezeNet. The aim of this approach is to show the success of ConceFT in analyzing the non-stationary signals. Classifications of epileptic EEG signals were performed according to different scenarios. Classification accuracies were obtained between 91,18% and 100%, which showed the promising performance of ConceFT. © 2024 IEEE.

Optical beam steering is essential for maintaining line-of-sight (LOS) connections between communicating terminals, ensuring reliable Free Space Optical (FSO) communication. However, achieving a LOS connection is challenging due to disturbances such as vibrations from communication terminal and/or the host of the terminal, which can misalign the optical beam. The accuracy of the optical beam position sensor, the controller for the beam actuation unit, and the actuation units impact the beam steering system’s performance. While extensive research has emphasized the importance of fast-steering mirrors (FSMs) as actuators and quadrant detectors (QDs) as optical beam position sensors in beam steering systems, most of these studies have focused on analyzing FSMs and QDs in isolation. This paper proposes a method to design and evaluate the impact of these components concurrently. Specifically, it suggests a tuning procedure for the controller in the FSM closed feedback loop and models the QD sensor using experimental data. The QD model is then integrated into the FSM control loop. To validate the viability of this integrated approach, its results are compared to those obtained with an ideal sensor. Integrating the QD model into the FSM control loop slightly increases overshoot but a faster and more responsive control is attainable. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between different materials incurs nonuniform deformation in a package called warpage. The warpage effect has evolved into a crucial reliability concern that demands careful management in advanced packaging. Considering the severe impact of the effect, we develop an efficient, high-fidelity warpage modeling of preprocessing followed by matrix calculation to address the issue by transforming a three-dimensional packaging structure to a two-dimensional thermo-solid coupling problem. The transformation provides an efficient measure to reduce the complexity of the packaging analysis. We then apply formal numerical methods to this model for a better trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. Experimental results show that our model averagely achieves respective speedups of 11.0X and 12130X in preprocessing and matrix calculation and an overall speedup of 233.9X with only 1.0% error over the Ansys commercial analysis tool. In particular, such high efficiency and accuracy enable our model for large-scale optimization, simulation, and modeling applications. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

The world is currently witnessing a rapid transformation in the production and utilization of electrical energy. The traditional centralized generation model for electric power is swiftly evolving into a more decentralized system, known as Distributed Generation (DG), which incorporates renewable energy sources situated closer to end-users. This shift towards DG has paved the way for the emergence of grid-forming converters, which play a pivotal role in enhancing voltage and frequency stability within microgrids (MGs) and isolated applications. This transformation is primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of inverter-based energy resources. In isolated MGs, ensuring high power quality becomes a paramount concern due to the presence of potentially disruptive loads and the risk of resonance issues arising from the integration of multiple electronically interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads. This study focuses on assessing the performance of the Zero Harmonic Distortion (ZHD) control method when applied to grid-forming converters in both stand-alone and parallel operation modes. The distinctive feature of this converter lies in its inherent ability to generate a sinusoidal voltage source without the need for capacitive filtering components, which can adversely affect cost, efficiency, and size while potentially contributing to resonance problems. This is achieved through a judicious combination of harmonic cancellation within a three-winding transformer and the utilization of Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE PWM) dismissing a closed-loop control structure. Simulation results presented in this work demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the ZHD grid-forming converter. © 2023 IEEE.

It has been required to develop simulation of vacuum arcs as a tool to aid electrode design in vacuum circuit breakers. Although the development of electromagnetic thermo-fluid simulations for vacuum arcs has been reported, most of them do not take cathode sheath phenomena into account and have not been able to reproduce vacuum arc phenomena, especially cathode spots. As the first step, the cathode sheath voltage, cathode surface electric field, and temperature and field (T-F) electron emission current were analyzed numerically on the basis of the space charge in the cathode sheath. In this paper, the cathode sheath was assumed to exist when the charge density induced on the cathode surface is positive, and the temperature and density of vacuum arc plasma and cathode temperature, which are physical quantities obtained by electromagnetic thermo-fluid simulation, were used as parameters of the analysis. As a result, the cathode sheath voltage, electric field, and electron emission current density can be calculated from the vacuum arc plasma temperature, density, and cathode temperature. Numerical results show that the electron emission current density has a dominant effect on the presence or absence of the cathode sheath. © 2024 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper discusses energy and cost comparison for 9 different combinations of Photovoltaic (PV) and Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sizes with load demand peak changes for the Kayangel Power System (KPS). 9 PV and BESS combinations were modeled with the existing 90kW Diesel Generator (DG) and simulated while analyzing the kWh energy values of DG operation, PV curtailment and battery power flow energy values. A comparative cost analysis was then conducted on these 3 energies using Installation Costs (IC), diesel fuel costs and energy charge costs. Following this, the study was expanded to a 20-year time period for more complete system lifetime cost estimations. Simulated energy losses and system costs showed mostly favorable values during increased PV and BESS sizes and shifted load demand peak. Simulation results also identified combinations where increased sizing and shifted load demand peak made little difference. © 2023 IEEE.
