Named entity (NE) translation plays an important role in many applications. In this paper, we focus on translating NEs from Korean to Chinese to improve Korean-Chinese cross-language information retrieval (KCIR). The ideographic nature of Chinese makes NE translation difficult because one syllable may map to several Chinese characters. We propose a hybrid NE translation system. First, we integrate two online databases to extend the coverage of our bilingual dictionaries. We use Wikipedia as a translation tool based on the inter-language links between the Korean edition and the Chinese or English editions. We also use ***'s people search engine to find a query name's Chinese or English translation. The second component is able to learn Korean-Chinese (KC), Korean-English (K-E), and English- Chinese (E-C) translation patterns from the web. These patterns can be used to extract K-C, K-E and E-C pairs from Google snippets. We found KCIR performance using this hybrid configuration over five times better than that a dictionary-based configuration using only Naver people search. Mean average precision was as high as 0.3385 and recall reached 0.7578. Our method can handle Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and non- CJK NE translation and improve performance of KCIR substantially. © 2008 IJCNLP 2008 - 3rd International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing, Proceedings of the Conference. The challenge of credit card fraud presents a significant threat to both consumers and financial institutions alike, leading to substantial economic detriment. In response, this research applies various machine learning strategies to sift through transactional data for the identification of fraudulent activities. Specifically, we employ logistic regression, decision trees, and random forest algorithms to analyze a compiled dataset of genuine and deceptive transactions. This dataset undergoes segmentation into training and testing phases, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of each algorithm's effectiveness. The determination of accuracy scores across these phases serves as a metric for model evaluation. The findings lay down an essential groundwork for ongoing exploration into leveraging machine learning for the mitigation of credit card fraud. The integration of these analytical models promises to bolster the fraud detection capabilities of both financial entities and individual cardholders, significantly reducing the incidence of financial loss. © 2024 IEEE.

Crémer and McLean [1985] showed that, when buyers' valuations are drawn from a correlated distribution, an auction with full knowledge on the distribution can extract the full social surplus. We study whether this phenomenon persists when the auctioneer has only incomplete knowledge of the distribution, represented by a finite family of candidate distributions, and has sample access to the real distribution. We show that the naive approach which uses samples to distinguish candidate distributions may fail, whereas an extended version of the Crémer-McLean auction simultaneously extracts full social surplus under each candidate distribution. With an algebraic argument, we give a tight bound on the number of samples needed by this auction, which is the difference between the number of candidate distributions and the dimension of the linear space they span. © 2014 ACM.

This paper describes a novel rotor position estimation method for IPMSM at low speed without any signal injection. The basic idea of proposed method is using derivative currents in zero vector state, because the derivative currents include the rotor position information. This paper presents the relationship between rotor position and current response at zero vector mathematically. By this relationship, a parameter sensitivity could also be deduced. Then, the validity of proposed method is demonstrated by experiments.

The scope of this work is to design an Optical Transport Network unifying the physical topology design, virtual topology design and routing and wavelength assignment. The objective is to calculate the global optimal solution, instead of partial solutions. The Mathematical Formulation defined here is based on the Quadratic Assignment Problem, and it could be used for networks with either grooming feature, or not, by allocating sub-wavelength demands, represented by SDH/SONET payload units. Two heuristics to solve this problem are proposed, the EXATO Heuristic, and a GRASP Heuristic. The results showed that the approach was successful to design a low cost optical network. © 2011 IEEE.

The key problem in multi-layer data storage readout system is how to separate the signal among different layers and avoid the crosstalk between the different layers. The adjusted Fuke prism method and dip incidence is used in focusing control of readout system. Since the practical requirements of fixing prism is higher, the variation of defocus signal with the prism fixing bias is analyzed and simulated in this paper. It is proved by theory and simulation that the focus error signal can be separated from each layer and be received by the detector with the consideration of fixing error and bias.

This paper explores real-time fault location in a power transmission network using measurements of transients from sparsely-placed synchrophasors. The fault-location problem is abstracted to a statistical hypothesis-testing or detection problem, wherein the linearized dynamical models corresponding to different fault conditions must be distinguished in the face of fault-clearing and measurement uncertainty. A maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) detector is constructed. A strategy for real-time implementation of the fault-locator is discussed, which is based on pre-computation of detector parameters using state-estimator and contingency-analysis data, along with on-line collection of synchrophrasor data and implementation of the hypothesis test. Numerical case studies of the 11-Bus two area power system verify that the proposed fault-location algorithm can locate a faulted line accurately and quickly.
