A simple dynamic model of an industrial size synchronous generator operating in a nuclear power plant is developed in this paper based on first engineering principles. The constructed state-space model consists of a nonlinear state equation and a bi-linear output equation. It has been shown that the model is locally asymptotically stable with parameters obtained from the literature for a similar generator. The effect of load disturbances on the partially controlled generator has been analyzed by simulation using a traditional PI controller. It has been found that the controlled system is stable and can follow the set-point changes in the effective power well. The disturbance rejection of the controller is also satisfactory.

Two methods for capturing the basis weight variation from imaging measurements have been developed. The problem is to estimate basis weight variation from the optical transmittance measurement which contains mixed information of many quality parameters. The first method calibrates with the scanning basis weight measurement the model relating the light transmittance and basis weight, whereas the second method uses the scanning measurement for filtering and replacing the transmittance measurement when necessary. The performance of the methods is evaluated with a simulator developed to describe the quality variations and control of the paper web. The simulated transmittance image is generated assuming a linear effect of basis weight, moisture and ash content on transmittance. The measurement modes and control options of the simulator are also presented.

A new concept for teaching an introduction course in controlengineering is described. The main issue is that the concept is based directly on the students' knowledge from previous courses in math, physics and electronics. This will provid the students with a more direct and clear link between these previous courses and athe introduction course in control theory. As a direct consequence, it is now possible to introduce and use feedback control from the first lecture. The new teaching concept has had a major effect on the exam results. In the two semesters before the changes, only 53% of the students passed the course. In the first two semesters after the changes, 86% of the students passed the course.

This paper presents a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) for the solution of the optimal power flow (OPF) with both continuous and discrete control variables that was called non-continuous optimal power flow (NCOPF). The continuous control variables modeled are unit active power outputs and generator-bus voltage magnitudes for traditional OPF, while the discrete ones are transformer-tap settings and shunt capacitor devices for integer variables OPF. All variables were processed by different technique separately, such as the continuous variables were solved by equivalent current injection-based OPF (ECIOPF), and the discrete ones were by MPSO. The computational results have showed that the proposed MPSO with the adaptive velocity that resulting in robustness and higher efficiently in non-convex OPF problems.
