A model of a sewer network for a medium city located in Easter Romania with 250,000 inhabitants is presented in the paper. The model was developed using BSM Sewer software package. An influent was also determined considering the 5 collecting areas and defined on a time- horizon of 28 days. The influent has the following components: a domestic one calculated using the average wastewater production of each inhabitant with specific loads and considering daily, weekly and yearly variations, a pluviometric one proportional to the collecting area surface that includes a rain event and a storm one and an industrial influent (considered only for the 5 th collecting area). The model was tested in different operating conditions of the sewer network considering three operating points given by the values of the valve opening and pumps flows at the tank outlets. The results were analyzed based on 10 performance indicators implemented by researchers from Lund University for BSM Sewer. They showed the need for an optimization of the operating regime of the sewer network in terms of volume and quality of discharged water.

This paper presents an event-based asymptotic tracking control scheme designed for strict feedback systems with unknown control directions. The control directions directly determine how the controller acts on the system, thus impacting the system's stability and convergence speed. When the control directions are unknown, it presents a significant challenge in controller design. To tackle this issue, the Nussbaum-type gains are introduced. However, this method increases communication overhead. Hence, an event-triggered mechanism is introduced to alleviate this burden. Additionally, to achieve and maintain desired target states, satisfying control requirements and performance demands, this paper improves the event-triggered mechanism to achieve asymptotic tracking. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design are validated through a simulation example.

This paper deals with an analysis regarding the effect of Sewer Network operation on the performances of the integrated wastewater collecting and treatment system. The analysis is done by considering various control actions for the output storage tank of the sewer network, comparing a series of performance indicators defined for both subsystems with their “no control” value. Two cases have been considered regarding the control actions for the output storage tank of the sewer network: 1. keeping the output valve at a constant opening and 2. keeping the output valve at the maximum opening possible such as the outflow is limited to a constant value. While the second case did not prove advantageous, the first one showed that lowering the sewer network output valve opening would improve the integrated system performances.

This paper deals with the optimization of a sewer network using a Sliding Window-based Particle Swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The sewer network corresponds to a city with a population of 250,000 inhabitants, its model being implemented in BSM Sewer. The optimization of the sewer network is done with respect to the amount of the discharged water minimizing this way the environmental impact of the wastewater collecting and transport systems. In the simulations, an influent containing three components was considered: domestic, pluviometric and industrial influent. Daily weather forecast for influent was considered. The control strategy proposed in this paper is based on the calculus of the optimal control actions for each individual tank with respect to the liquid level in that tank. The optimal controls were determined over a 24-hour sliding time window. The optimization algorithm was run over a time horizon of 28 days, during which two events were considered, one of rain and one of storm. As the daily forecast of the influent is not 100% accurate, a disturbed influent was considered to observe if the performance of the algorithm is maintained in this scenario. The simulation results were compared with those obtained in the operating mode “no control” (all control actions set at 100%).

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology aimed at creating a collective network of various devices and facilitating communication between devices, the cloud, and other devices. With the rapid development of communication technologies, IoT has flourished even more. Hence, engineers need to have a certain level of awareness regarding basic IoT devices. However, due to a lack of knowledge and experience, new engineers may inadvertently cause equipment damage or expose themselves to electric shock when directly operating IoT devices. To overcome this problem, various training systems have been developed to allow engineers unfamiliar with the equipment to learn its operation. As global interest in virtual reality (VR) has grown in recent years, researchers have begun to simulate device operations in virtual environments. This research aims to create a simulator for operating IoT devices through virtual reality. It is based on the ADAM IoT device, along with required sensors such as switches, potentiometers, light barrier sensors, and buzzers. These necessary models were constructed using Blender or Autopano and consolidated into Unity, a cross-platform 2D and 3D game engine. Based on the basic procedures of ADAM, VR technology and C# scripting were utilized to control the connection of each circuit. Operators can freely observe within the virtual environment, serving as a simulator for learning about IoT devices. The screen will display the functions of each instrument in a game-like manner, with step-by-step tutorials including power-on, basic parameter settings, connection of subsequent devices and sensors, and presentation in the virtual space. In case of an operational error, a warning screen will appear in the user's field of view.
