Graph-Based Variation Propagation Network for Modeling and Prediction of Hybrid Multi-Stage Manufacturing systems

Multistage Manufacturing systems (MMS) are common in industries involving complex processes with multiple stages, each impacting the final product quality. Traditional product quality modeling approaches struggle with the intricate interdependencies and variable structures within these systems, further complicated by the extensive sensor-generated data. In this paper, we introduce Graph-based Variation Propagation Network (GVPNet), an innovative approach for end-to-end learning of product quality representations and their propagation through MMS stages. GVPNet utilizes a heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (hGAT) architecture that uses a graph representation specifically tailored for MMS, facilitating the effective application of graph neural networks (GNN) in this context. The network's ability to aggregate information and learn node embeddings enables it to predict quality variables several stages ahead, thus offering a proactive tool for quality control. GVPNet was applied in two real world case studies and demonstrated its superiority in predictive accuracy and robustness over benchmarks. Note to Practitioners - This paper introduces the Graph-based Variation Propagation Network (GVPNet), designed to enhance quality prediction in Multistage Manufacturing systems (MMS) where traditional models fall short. Integrating a tailored graph representation with the Graph Attention Network (hGAT), GVPNet excels in capturing the complex dynamics of MMS, including inter-stage dependencies. This approach enables more accurate and proactive quality control in various manufacturing contexts, providing a significant tool for practitioners to optimize processes and improve product quality, even in data-rich environments. © 2025 IEEE.

A budget-adaptive allocation rule for optimal computing budget allocation

Simulation-based ranking and selection (R&S) is a popular technique for optimizing discrete-event systems (DESs). It evaluates the mean performance of system designs by simulation outputs and aims to identify the best system design from a set of alternatives by intelligently allocating a limited simulation budget. In R&S, the optimal computing budget allocation (OCBA) is an efficient budget allocation rule that asymptotically maximizes the probability of correct selection (PCS). In this paper, we first show the asymptotic OCBA rule can be recovered by considering a large-scale problem with a specific large budget. Considering a sufficiently large budget can greatly simplify computations, but it also causes the asymptotic OCBA rule ignoring the impact of budget. To address this, we then derive a budget-adaptive rule under the setting where budget is not large enough to simplify computations. The proposed budget-adaptive rule determines the ratio of total budget allocated to designs based on the budget size, and its budget-adaptive property highlights the significant impact of budget on allocation strategy. Based on the proposed budget-adaptive rule, two heuristic algorithms are developed. In the numerical experiments, the superior efficiency of our proposed allocation rule is shown. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer a powerful technology for sensing and transmitting data across vast geographical regions. However, limitations inherent to WSNs, such as low-power sensor units, communication constraints, and limited processing capabilities, can significantly impact their lifespan. To address these limitations and enhance the energy efficiency of WSNs, it is often necessary to divide sensors into clusters and establish routing to conserve energy. Machine learning algorithms can potentially automate these processes, minimizing energy consumption and extending network lifetime. This research investigates the application of machine learning algorithms, specifically Q-learning and K-means clustering, to propose the Energy-Efficient Machine Learning-based Clustering and Routing (EEMLCR) method for WSNs. This method facilitates cluster formation and routing path selection. The proposed method is compared with the well-established LEACH algorithm and two multi-hop variants, DMHT LEACH and EDMHT LEACH to validate its effectiveness. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of EEMLCR compared to LEACH and its multi-hop variants (DMHT LEACH and EDMHT LEACH). After 600 rounds in networks comprising 400 nodes, EEMLCR showed significant improvements in key performance metrics. These include increased alive nodes, reduced average energy consumption, higher remaining energy levels, and improved packet reception. Additionally, we compared EEMLCR with recent state-of-the-art algorithms such as EECDA and CMML, where our method demonstrated comparable or superior performance in terms of network lifetime and energy efficiency. By optimizing clustering and routing strategies, WSNs can reduce energy consumption, leading to more efficient utilization of the limited energy resources available to sensor nodes. A New Model of Trapped Charge Sources in Switching Transient Studies in the Presence of Shunt Reactors

Insulation coordination studies are of great importance in power grid reliability. In this paper, a new method is proposed for modeling trapped charge sources (TCS) in switching transient studies. The TCS is used to take into account the voltage stored in line capacitors during reclosing operation after fault occurrence. The proposed model is designed based on the active filter concept, thus overcoming the limitations of conventional TCS for simulating transient states in EMTP/ATPDraw. Given the natural frequencies of a transmission line to which the proposed TCS (PTCS) is connected, it injects the appropriate frequencies and eliminates voltage oscillations which limit the use of TCS. To verify the efficiency of the PTCS, it is implemented in a real system with a shunt reactor, and the results are then compared with field measurements. A comparison of the results shows that the PTCS eliminates the voltage oscillations in the simulation before closing and provides a smooth voltage with the desired amplitude. Using the proposed model, the maximum line switching overvoltage is correctly calculated;this, in turn, results in a more accurate transmission line insulation design, which is technically and economically beneficial. © 2025 The Authors. We consider a general conic mixed-binary set where each homogeneous conic constraint j involves an affine function of independent continuous variables and an epigraph variable associated with a nonnegative function, fj, of common binary variables. Sets of this form naturally arise as substructures in a number of applications, including mean-risk optimization, chance-constrained problems, portfolio optimization, lot sizing and scheduling, fractional programming, variants of the best subset selection problem, a class of sparse semidefinite programs, and distributionally robust chance-constrained programs. We give a convex hull description of this set that relies on simultaneous characterization of the epigraphs of fj’s, which is easy to do when all functions fj’s are submodular. Our result unifies and generalizes an existing result in two important directions. First, it considers multiple general convex cone constraints instead of a single second-order cone type constraint. Second, it takes arbitrary nonnegative functions instead of a specific submodular function obtained from the square root of an affine function. We close by demonstrating the applicability of our results in the context of a number of problem classes. © 2023 INFORMS.

This study evaluates the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process(FAHP)as a multi-criteria decision(MCD)support tool for selecting appropriate additive manufacturing(AM)techniques that align with cleaner production and environmental *** FAHP model was validated using an example of the production of aircraft components(specifically fuselage)employing AM technologies such as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing(WAAM),laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF),Binder Jetting(BJ),Selective Laser Sintering(SLS),and Laser Metal Deposition(LMD).The selection criteria prioritized eco-friendly manufacturing considerations,including the quality and properties of the final product(e.g.,surface finish,high strength,and corrosion resistance),service and functional requirements,weight reduction for improved energy efficiency(lightweight structures),and environmental *** metrics,such as cost-effectiveness,material efficiency,waste minimization,and environmental impact,are central to the evaluation process.A computer-aided modeling approach was also used to simulate the performance of aluminum(AA7075 T6),steel(304),and titanium alloy(Ti6Al4V)for fuselage *** results demonstrate that MCD approaches such as FAHP can effectively guide the selection of AM technologies that meet functional and technical requirements while minimizing environmental degradation ***,the aluminumalloy outperformed the other materials investigated in the simulation with the lowest stress concentration and least *** study contributes to advancing cleaner production practices by providing a decision-making framework for sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing,enabling manufacturers to adopt AM technologies that promote environmental responsibility and sustainable development,while maintaining product quality and performance.

Significant research is currently being conducted to explore renewable energy sources, such as biomass fuel, in response to recent fluctuations in fossil fuel prices and environmental concerns. However, utilizing biomass energy poses challenges due to the widespread distribution of feedstock and the need to transport multiple low-energy-density materials to conversion facilities. In this investigation, a Linguistics Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (LMINLP) approach with Z-number computations was employed to analyze the optimal allocation of locations for a bio-refinery supply chain network. This proposed method significantly impacted the product process, time value for plutocrats, installation investment costs, and transportation network. This research aims to construct an LMINLP model to determine the optimal position of a single installation within a bio-refinery. The primary goal was to make well-informed investment decisions regarding technologies, facilities, capacities, and site selections. A firefly algorithm incorporating a piecewise linearization approach was utilized to solve the model and achieve global optimality. The model’s effectiveness was demonstrated through numerical examples, including those from the ethanol industry. © 2013 IEEE.

Nano-surgical robots are transforming precision medicine by enabling minimally invasive procedures at a microscopic scale. Informative path planning for these robots is critical for ensuring safety, efficiency, and high precision in navigating sensitive anatomical and uncertain environments. This study adapts the RRT*-IT (Rapidly Exploring Random Tree-Information Theoretic) algorithm, traditionally utilized in robotics, to address the unique challenges faced by nano-surgical robots. The proposed methodology offers significant advancements in sub-millimeter precision navigation, reducing collision risks and enhancing procedural efficiency. The adaptive path planning system optimizes a trade-off between collision avoidance and information gain while minimizing surgical trajectory. The algorithm dynamically adjusts paths by incorporating probabilistic models for obstacle detection and uncertainty reduction, accommodating changes in tissue density, obstacle dimensions, and operational constraints. The performance of proposed approach are validated through various scenarios involving dynamic uncertain environments. The findings hold promise for broader applications in automated drug delivery setting a foundation for intelligent nano-robotic systems in healthcare. © 2025 IEEE.

Controlling an active distribution network(ADN)from a single PCC has been advantageous for improving the performance of coordinated Intermittent RESs(IRESs).Recent studies have proposed a constant PQ regulation approach at the PCC of ADNs using coordination of non-MPPT based ***,due to the intermittent nature of DGs coupled with PCC through uni-directional broadcast communication,the PCC becomes vulnerable to transient *** address this challenge,this study first presents a detailed mathematical model of an ADN from the perspective of PCC regulation to realize rigidness of PCC against ***,an H_(∞)controller is formulated and employed to achieve optimal performance against disturbances,consequently,ensuring the least oscillations during transients at ***,an eigenvalue analysis is presented to analyze convergence speed limitations of the newly derived system ***,simulation results show the proposed method offers superior performance as compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

systems engineering often employs "-ilities", such as affordability, to represent various aspects of a system. While these "-ilities" are widely used, exact definitions for the terms can vary between individuals. While most definitions of affordability include some cost notion, only a subset balance cost against a benefit. Additionally, some definitions treat affordability as a binary constraint, a system either is affordable or it is not. Others define it in more continuous terms which could be treated as an objective to be maximized. While multiple definitions can be readily observed from different sources, the degree to which definitions for a concept such as affordability differs within a single organization has not been thoroughly studied. This paper presents results from a survey completed by 172 employees of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Definitions of affordability from each participant are categorized ac-cording to how cost and benefit notions are used in the definition. Eight different categories of definitions were observed;however, 86 of the 172 definitions were categorized as involving a cost constraint with no clear benefit component. Due to the variety of definitions of affordability observed, practitioners should be cautious about assuming what stakeholders and fellow decision makers mean when using the term affordability. The use of affordability definitions categorized as involving only a cost constraint may result in the elimination of alternatives in a design space, rather than driving decision makers to continuously improve affordability. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
