This paper describes the issues related to the design of a trusted electronic document management system (TEDMS). The computer security issues and background research that lead to the final design of a TEDMS application are also discussed. The major component of an electronic document management system (EDMS) is the database in which the documents' metadata are kept. In a TEDMS, this database becomes a multilevel secure (MLS) database. The challenge of this design is to regroup MLS database design and trusted application design in one homogeneous application.

The authors measure the amount of compression that can be accomplished by the use of Huffman coding, and the effects of adaption based on the statistics of the input file. The coding algorithm has been designed to generate codes for character strings instead of for a single character. Each compressed file has a unique set of Huffman codes. The results of using adaptive Huffman coding algorithm has demonstrated that the larger the file the more useful the technique for compression. Also, the results show that the amount of memory that can be saved is up to 55.0% when text file is being used, and up to 40.9% when binary image file is being used.< >

A linear parabolic partial differential equation describing the pathwise filter for a nondegenerate diffusion is changed, by an exponential substitution, into the dynamic programming equation of an optimal stochastic control problem. This substitution is applied to obtain results about the rate of decay as |x| → ∞ of solutions p(x, t) to the pathwise filter equation, and for solutions of the corresponding Zakai equation.
