The development of intelligent building and the network technology involved were introduced. The scheme of remote monitoring and control system of intelligent building based on LonWorks and Web was presented. The framework and working principle were analyzed. The key technology involved was studied. A prototype system was established according to the above scheme. The results of experiment show that the system works well.

This study is an effort to give a practical solution in the problem of optimizing the structure of the hierarchical mixture of experts model, which is a natural extension of the associative Gaussian mixture of experts system. We present two novel methods for optimizing such structures using genetic algorithms. Special concern is taken for reducing the computational time so as to efficiently allow the structure to "grow" while it evolves with the genetic algorithm. The main contribution of the paper lies on the efficient, topologically oriented, representations of such architectures so as to be optimized through involving genetic algorithms.

The accuracy of concrete strength inspection has a great influence on the safety evaluation of the building. In order to increase the accuracy, Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) was built up to evaluate concrete stmngth: It takes full advantage of the characteristics of the common concrete testing methods: drill and rebound, and the abilities of FNN including automatic learning, generation and fuzzy logic inference. The experiment shows that the max relative error of the predicted results is 1.12%, which is satisfied with the requirements of the engineering. The method effieieatly maps the complex non-linear relationship between the drill values and the rebound values, and provides a efficient way for the concrete strength inspection and evaluation.

This paper presents a recurrent neural network-based approach for modal parameters identification of structure-unknown systems. The proposed approach involves two steps. The first step is to build a recurrent neural network to map the complex nonlinear relation between the excitations and responses of the structure-unknown system by off-line learning. The second step is to propose a procedure to determine the modal parameters of the system from the trained neural networks. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are directly evaluated from the weighting matrices of the trained recurrent neural network. Furthermore, an illustrative example demonstrates the feasibility of using the proposed method to identify modal parameters of structure-unknown systems. The method proposed can be used to research on fault diagnosis of engineer structure.

In image-based rendering (IBR) applications, how to effectively and efficiently interpolate two consecutive images is a crucial and difficult problem to rend smooth transition. This paper presents a new and efficient algorithm to synthesize two consecutive images with relatively big scale change but little rotation change. First, the algorithm constructs triangular regions using the Delaunay triangulation. Based on the triangulation, we find a matched convex hull, constructed from the matched corner points, between the two images. According to the convex hull, the algorithm divides the images into the center and the border regions in which different methods are employed to map pixels between the two images. Then, a fast texture-mapping method is used to map pixels in the triangular regions. Experimental results conducted on real images demonstrated that our method could produce superior image-based rendering effect in real-time.

This article discusses the basic ideas and the practical applications of information acquisition in relation to psychophysics theory as implemented via the soft-haptics concept for Internet based robotic teleoperation systems. In specific, a study on using acoustic display for navigation applications in Internet-based robot teleoperation is presented via psychophysics tests and experimental studies of the Internet based teleoperated robotic systems to illustrate the ideas and concepts of this paper.

A procedure for H/sub /spl infin// optimization of low order controllers for discrete-time and sampled-data systems is presented in this paper. Generally, low order H/sub /spl infin// controllers may be achieved by solving bilinear matrix inequalities (BMIs). In this paper an iterative alternation between two LMIs gives a suboptimal solution. To avoid local minima in this search the initial controller is obtained by a frequency weighted controller reduction scheme, where the closed loop properties of a full order controller is taken into account. A minimal number of parameters in the state space realization of the controller also reduces the complexity and improves numerical robustness. The complete presentation is based on delta operator models, which shows a close relationship between the continuous- and discrete-time solutions. The sensitivity of the ordinary discrete-time shift operator LMI formulation to small sampling periods is also analyzed.

Corner detection has been shown to be extremely useful in many computer vision applications. In this paper, an improved SUSAN corner detector is proposed and its performance is compared with Harris and SUSAN corner detection. The method adopts an adaptive multi-threshold strategy based on local brightness rather than one threshold for the whole image, and divides the circular mask area of SUSAN into two or more parts. Next, the number of pixels in the part where the nucleus locates is calculated. If the number is less than half the total pixels of the circular mask, the nucleus becomes a corner candidate. The exact positions of image corners are those candidates with local minimum numbers. In order to improve the computational efficiency of the algorithm, we limit the search space for corner candidates to those pixels whose intensity gradient magnitudes by Sobel operator are higher than a threshold. Experiments have demonstrated that our corner detector is accurate and efficient.

A unified and general framework is presented for H/sub /spl infin// control of mixed continuous-time and discrete-time time-varying (periodic) systems. Using the delta operator, a close relationship is shown between the continuous- and discrete-time solutions. No assumptions are made on certain system matrices being zero or normalized, which makes the approach general and easy to apply. A combined continuous/discrete-time lifting procedure is shown to be useful, especially for ill-conditioned systems. This procedure together with the delta formalism results in a numerically robust design method concerning both short and long sampling periods for systems with W-conditioned dynamics, including widely spread eigenvalues.

In an Internet-based control system, particular human operations may violate desired requirements and lead to destructive failure. For such human-in-the-loop systems, this paper extends the remote supervisory scheme by Lee and Hsu (2003) to a modular one so as to reduce the supervisor synthesis complexity. Also, remote human issued commands are guaranteed to meet required specifications. A rapid thermal process in semiconductor manufacturing systems is provided to show the practicability of the proposed approach.
