Generative AI (GenAI) is driving the intelligence of wireless communications. Due to data limitations, random generation, and dynamic environments, GenAI may generate channel information or optimization strategies that violate physical laws or deviate from actual real-world requirements. We refer to this phenomenon as wireless hallucination, which results in invalid channel information, spectrum wastage, and low communication reliability but remains underexplored. To address this gap, this article provides a comprehensive concept of wireless hallucinations in GenAI-driven communications, focusing on hallucination mitigation. Specifically, we first introduce the fundamental, analyze its causes based on the GenAI workflow, and propose mitigation solutions at the data, model, and post-generation levels. Then, we systematically examines representative hallucination scenarios in GenAI-enabled communications and their corresponding solutions. Finally, we propose a novel integrated mitigation solution for GenAI-based channel estimation. At the data level, we establish a channel estimation hallucination dataset and employ generative adversarial networks (GANs)-based data augmentation. Additionally, we incorporate attention mechanisms and large language models (LLMs) to enhance both training and inference performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid solutions reduce the normalized mean square error (NMSE) by 0.19, effectively reducing wireless hallucinations. This paper presents a haptic device with a simple architecture of only two limbs that can provide translational motion in three degrees of freedom (DOF) and one-DOF rotational motion. Actuation redundancy eliminates all forward-kinematic singularities and improves the motion-force transmission property. Thanks to the special structure of the kinematic chains, all actuators are close to the base and full gravity compensation is achieved passively by using springs. Force producibility analysis shows that this haptic device is able to produce long-term continuous force feedback of 15–30 N in each direction. By developing a prototype of the haptic device and a virtual three-dimensional simulator, a preliminary performance evaluation of the haptic device was conducted. In addition, a torque distribution algorithm considering a relaxed form of actuator-torque saturation was experimentally evaluated, and a comparison with other algorithms reveals that this algorithm offers several advantages.

Accelerating the immense workloads of Neural Networks (NNs) is a critical challenge, and analog computing-based approaches present a promising solution. Among these, the Integrate-and-Fire (IF) Spiking Neural Network (SNN) stands out for its potential in efficient neural computation. However, achieving high inference accuracy through precise multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations necessitates a large membrane capacitor—224 to 547 times larger than the synapse array at the 14nm technology node—resulting in prohibitive area costs. Additionally, the large capacitor size introduces higher energy consumption and longer access times. Thus, a key research challenge is maintaining accuracy while mitigating the costs associated with the large membrane capacitor. In this work, we propose a HW/SW Codesign method, called CapMin, for capacitor size minimization in analog computing IF-SNNs. CapMin minimizes the capacitor size by reducing the number of spike times needed for accurate operation of the HW, based on the absolute frequency of MAC level occurrences in the SW. To increase the operation of IF-SNNs to current variation, we propose the method CapMin-V, which trades capacitor size for protection based on the reduced capacitor size found in CapMin. In our experiments, CapMin achieves more than a 14 $\times$ reduction in capacitor size along with a 34% reduction in energy consumption over the state of the art, while CapMin-V achieves increased variation tolerance in the IF-SNN operation, requiring only a small increase in capacitor size.

Even though earliest-deadline-first (EDF) is optimal in terms of uniprocessor schedulability, it is co-NP-hard to precisely verify uniprocessor schedulability for constrained-deadline task sets. The most efficient way to solve this problem in polynomial time is via a partially linear approximation of the demand bound function. Such approximation leads to a simple uniprocessor schedulability testing with speedup factor ρ. Such a result further leads to Deadline-Monotonic Partitioned-EDF on multi-processors with speedup factor of 1 + ρ − 1/m (where m is the number of processors). The current state of the art results indicate that ρ is within the range [1.5, 14/9]. Especially, it has been a conjecture that ρ = 1.5. This paper improves the range of ρ to (1.5026, 1.5380). The improved lower bound disproves the conjecture of lower bound 1.5. A novel technique is to construct an auxiliary function that is larger than the approximate demand bound function but keeps the supremum ρ unchanged. It solves the dilemma that beating the lower bound 1.5 requires extremely large task sets, while the large size makes it difficult to check the schedulability. This technique not only enables us to disprove 1.5 by a task set of only eight tasks, but also sheds light on future work in transferring/downsizing task sets and deriving utilization bound based tests for various workload abstraction models, such as DAG tasks. ©2021 IEEE

Streaming keyword spotting (KWS) is an important technique for voice assistant wake-up. While KWS with a preset fixed keyword has been well studied, test-time customizable keyword spotting in streaming mode remains a great challenge due to the lack of pre-collected keyword-specific training data and the requirement of streaming detection output. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end text-adaptive neural search architecture with a multi-label trigger mechanism to allow any pre-trained ASR acoustic model to be effectively used for fast streaming customizable keyword spotting. Evaluation results on various datasets show that our approach significantly outperforms both traditional post-processing baseline and the neural search baseline, meanwhile achieving a 44x search speedup compared to the traditional post-processing method. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Secret key generation in physical layer security exploits the unpredictable random nature of wireless channels. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels have limited multipath and channel randomness in static environments. In this paper, for mmWave secret key generation of physical layer security, we use a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to induce randomness directly in wireless environments, without adding complexity to transceivers. We consider RIS to have continuous individual phase shifts (CIPS) and derive the RIS-assisted reflection channel distribution with its parameters. Then, we propose continuous group phase shifts (CGPS) to increase the randomness specifically at legal parties. Since the continuous phase shifts are expensive to implement, we analyze discrete individual phase shifts (DIPS) and derive the corresponding channel distribution, which is dependent on the quantization bit. We then derive the secret key rate (SKR) to evaluate the randomness performance. With the simulation results verifying the analytical results, this work explains the mathematical principles and lays a foundation for future mmWave evaluation and optimization of artificial channel randomness.

The combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity to meet up with high energy demands of buildings, increases pollution;deteriorating the environment and accelerating climate change. The idea of net zero energy buildings (nZEB) was developed to reduce building energy use and pollution. However, there are still many obstacles to implementing the nZEB idea, notably in sub-Saharan Africa, where energy consumption and pollutant emissions from buildings are particularly high. This article focuses on Cameroon, Senegal, and Côte d'Ivoire and proposes guidelines for making a smooth transition to nZEB in sub-Saharan Africa, as are examples of strategies that might be used to minimize energy consumption in buildings and pollution. The path has been shown to consist of the following steps: conducting a baseline assessment;creating building energy codes and standards;conducting a stakeholder analysis;carrying out capacity building and awareness-raising;setting up financing mechanisms and incentives;creating a strong supply chain;setting up a monitoring and evaluation framework;piloting nZEB projects;disseminating best practices;and scaling up adoption. With this plan in place, sub-Saharan Africa can make the most of its resources while preserving the environment as it makes the move to nZEB © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

PROV-IO+: A Cross-Platform Provenance Framework for Scientific Data on HPC systems

Data provenance, or data lineage, describes the life cycle of data. In scientific workflows on HPC systems, scientists often seek diverse provenance (e.g., origins of data products, usage patterns of datasets). Unfortunately, existing provenance solutions cannot address the challenges due to their incompatible provenance models and/or system implementations. In this paper, we analyze four representative scientific workflows in collaboration with the domain scientists to identify concrete provenance needs. Based on the first-hand analysis, we propose a provenance framework called PROV-IO+, which includes an I/O-centric provenance model for describing scientific data and the associated I/O operations and environments precisely. Moreover, we build a prototype of PROV-IO+ to enable end-to-end provenance support on real HPC systems with little manual effort. The PROV-IO+ framework can support both containerized and non-containerized workflows on different HPC platforms with flexibility in selecting various classes of provenance. Our experiments with realistic workflows show that PROV-IO+ can address the provenance needs of the domain scientists effectively with reasonable performance (e.g., less than 3.5% tracking overhead for most experiments). Singing voice conversion (SVC) aims to convert a singer’s voice to another singer’s from a reference audio while keeping the original semantics. However, existing SVC methods can hardly perform zero-shot due to incomplete feature disentanglement or dependence on the speaker look-up table. We propose the first open-source high-quality zero-shot SVC model SaMoye that can convert singing to human and non-human timbre. SaMoye disentangles the singing voice’s features into content, timbre, and pitch features, where we combine multiple ASR models and compress the content features to reduce timbre leakages. Besides, we enhance the timbre features by unfreezing the speaker encoder and mixing the speaker embedding with top-3 similar speakers. We also establish an unparalleled large-scale dataset to guarantee zero-shot performance, which comprises more than 1,815 hours of pure singing voice and 6,367 speakers. We conduct objective and subjective experiments to find that SaMoye outperforms other models in zero-shot SVC tasks even under extreme conditions like converting singing to animals’ timbre.
