Forty years ago, in 1983, Lee Schruben proposed the Event Graph formalism and modeling language, subsequently defining the paradigm of Event-Based Simulation, in a precise way, which had been pioneered 20 years before by SIMSCRIPT. The purpose of this panel is for a group of Event Graph researchers both from Operations Research and computer Science, including the inventor of Event Graphs and one of his former PhD students who has made essential contributions to their theory, to discuss their views on the history and potential of Event Graph modeling and simulation. In particular, the adoption of Event Graphs as a discrete process modeling language in Discrete Event Simulation and in computer Science, and their potential as a foundation for the entire field of Discrete Event Simulation and for the fields of process modeling and AI in computer Science is debated.

The design and modeling of a self-balanced two-output battery charger capable to charge two high-power LiFePO4 battery packs is presented. The proposal is based on a four-phase resonant converter, which is designed as a voltage-controlled current-source, working at constant switching frequency. The output stage consists of a transformer with a single primary and two secondaries implementing two current-doubler rectifiers. The structure of the output stage naturally imposes the self-balance-of-charge of both battery packs provided that the coupling between the primary and each of the secondaries has a negligible mismatch. The electrical model of the battery is used to study the batteries charge equalization during the charging process considering the non-idealities of the output transformer. The theoretical analysis and design procedure of the proposed battery charger is fully explained. The output current capability and efficiency are validated experimentally considering a 50 Ah 48 V commercial battery pack.

Given the difficulty of recognizing ambiguous emotions in facial expression recognition tasks, we propose a visual-language model named CAER-CLIP to address this challenge. The proposed CAER-CLIP standed for Context-Aware Emotion Recognition (CAER), and were incorporated structure of the Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training (CLIP) model as promising alternative to classifier. There are two parts in CAER-CLIP model. In the visual part, facial expressions and contextual information of the image are simultaneously extracted to obtain the final feature embeddings, which are then used as a learnable “class” token for text-image pairing with desired module. In the textual part, we use text labels for emotion recognition classes as input. The outputs were merged to participate the comparative study to generated parameters of the model. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show that our CAER-CLIP outperforms the state-of-the-art results on the CAER benchmark. The ablation experiment verified the effectiveness of both the classifier-based and text-based (ours without classifier) models, demonstrating that our method with the CAER-CLIP structure performed better, and the incorporation of a text encoder in the deep network model architecture effectively enhancing recognition accuracy.

Analog circuit design automation remains an intense area of attention and has seen both new and existing tools continued to be developed targeting different phases of the analog design flow to reduce development time and cost. One of the promising tools is the Berkeley analog generator (BAG2) framework which is an open-source analog layout generator for automating and verifying circuit layouts. It promises a process-independent flow as well as encourages design re-use due to using parameterized generators which can be scaled as required and this reduces the layout-development time compared to manual hand-made layouts. This work describes the effort and results of evaluating the BAG2 framework for the TSMC 65nm and Cadence GPDK 45nm processes. A case study is made with a number of circuits to discuss the problems in setting up and using BAG2 for the above technologies as well as the limitations and solutions required to utilize the framework effectively.
