To connect renewable energy sources (e.g. solar or wind) on the grid, an inverter or electronic converter is used. However, a traditional inverter has no inertia in the face of frequency changes. Unlike the inertia of the rotor of a synchronous generator. Frequency variations are a product of the imbalance between the energy generated and the grid loads. If the frequency is too far from its nominal value or if the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) is high, it can affect the synchronism of the generators that feed the grid. Therefore, power cuts are made in sectors on the grid, thus preventing instability from spreading to other sectors on the grid, which translates into large economic losses. Solutions such as inverters with virtual inertia (or emulated inertia) are a good alternative due to their structural simplicity and low cost, compared to other solutions such as synchronous condensers, for example. For the virtual inertial control strategy, the grid frequency needs to be measured. This article compares the use of a phase-locked loop (PLL) or a frequency-locked loop (FLL) for frequency estimation and its effect on inertia emulation. This paper presents the dynamic modelling and end effector position control of a soft endoscope. Soft endoscope system under study consists mainly of a pneumatic driven soft actuator (PDSA) with four independently chambers. Recurrent neural network (RNN) and dynamic back propagation (DBP) training algorithm are used to obtain PDSA dynamic model. PDSA position controller is based on a feedforward neural network (FNN) and it is trained using PDSA closed loop system (CLS) and DBP training algorithm. CLS stability analysis concludes that it is not possible control PDSA end effector position using one position controller for different end effector initial and desired positions. Fuzzy logic methodology is used to integrate several positions controllers in a one controller valid for all operation range. The controller implementation and close loop system simulation are performed in MATLAB for different end effector desired position to validate system performance in all range of operation. © 2024 IEEE.

In the electronic engineering undergraduate program, Peruvian universities offer different theoretical courses of Automatic Control that do not present enough practical approach to the algorithms that are studied during the progress of these courses;however, the approach to implementation is very important to achieve good performance in the industry and researching. In this work is presented XSpace, an innovative and friendly platform which consists of a robust hardware that allows the student to take it home;this way, the student is given the opportunity to implement digital control algorithms learned in the theoretical classes. The effectiveness of this platform is shown using a proposed methodology which evidences greater interest, efficiency and efficacy in students at the Automatic Control area. This project was implemented in the 'Control Systems' course at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP) from 2020 to 2022. Results are presented through a student survey and a history of average grades during the academic periods the platform was employed. © 2023 IEEE.

Prediction and optimization of thrust performance from plasma diagnostics in the inductively coupled plasma of an RF ion thruster

Ion thrusters have acquired extensive applications in the space industry with their advantages of high efficiency, high specific impulse, and long lifetime. To operate a radio-frequency (RF) ion thruster successfully, a high-frequency current must be generated to facilitate the discharge of inductively coupled plasma. In this study, with support of trial and error, it is discovered that the thrust performance of an RF ion thruster depends on not only the RF power but also on other critical parameters, such as the propellant flow rate, ion grids voltages, and RF input power. A surrogate model, namely – the Kriging model, is employed to simplify the estimation and optimization of thrust performance. The thrust and specific impulse are selected to be the crucial metrics for used Kriging models for categorizing all types of propulsions. On the basis of Kriging model simulations, the designed RF ion thruster can achieve a thrust of 1.9 mN, a specific impulse of 1649.5 s, and a thrust efficiency of 48% under a propellant flow rate of 4 sccm, grids’ voltage difference of 2500 V, and an RF input power of 40 W. © 2023 IAA

In this study, we aimed to develop LED lighting with an emission spectrum effective for microalgae propagation, and fabricated LED lighting with Phosphor layer RGB, which has peaks in the red, green, and blue wavelength bands, and Phosphor layer RG'B', which has broader peaks in the red, green, and blue wavelength bands. In order to examine the effect of microalgae propagation, Closterium ehrenbergii samples prepared at different dilution rates were irradiated with LED illumination light of Phosphor layer RG'B' and Phosphor layer RGB, respectively, for 7 days, and their propagation rates were compared. The results of the experiment showed that Phosphor layer RG'B' produced a higher propagation rate than Phosphor layer RGB. © 2024 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, which is pulsed using PWM control, on Staphylococcus aureus. To evaluate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, three types of Near-UV LEDs with wavelengths of 395 nm, 385 nm, and 365 nm were installed within a sealed space inside an incubator and energized with a forward current of 1000 mA and a forward voltage of 3.6 V, and the disinfection rate under each type of light was assessed. Additionally, the disinfection effect was evaluated when the same three types of Near-UV LEDs were pulsed with a 50% duty cycle. As a result, 100% disinfection was achieved with 365 nm Near-UV LED direct-current irradiation for 120 seconds, and a 93% disinfection rate was obtained with pulsed irradiation for 150 seconds. © 2024 IEEE.

Many Internet protocol (IP) lookup algorithms have been formulated to improve network performance. This study reviewed and experimentally evaluated technologies for trie-based methods that reduce memory access, memory consumption and IP lookup time. Experiments involving binary tries (for simplicity) were conducted on four real-world data sets, two of which were on IPv4 router tables (855,997 and 876,489 active prefixes) and two of which were on IPv6 router tables (155,310 and 157,579 active prefixes). Technologies designed to reduce time taken (at the expense of memory consumption) worked well for IPv4, and those designed to reduce memory consumption worked well for IPv6. Various combinations of these technologies were applied together in the experiments. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

With advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision technologies have seen significant progress, enabling applications like facial recognition, autonomous driving, and medical imaging. This study leverages the Multi-Camera Action Dataset (MCAD) and MediaPipe Pose to create a skeletal dataset for training a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to recognize 18 types of daily actions. Evaluation using confusion matrix and F1 score reveals that Action 16 (Object Carry) is often misclassified as Action 7 (Walk) due to similar leg movements, and Action 9 (Cell to Ear) as Action 1 (Wave) due to similar hand movements. Future work aims to enhance model accuracy and explore broader applications in physical activity and exercise analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

This study synthesizes three sequential steps: pretreatment, acid hydrolysis, and enzyme hydrolysis for bioethanol and hydrochar production from macroalga Gracilaria. The Taguchi method is employed separately in each step to optimize relevant operating factors, aiming to maximize the monosaccharide yield. During pretreatment, environmentally friendly alkaline ionized water is utilized as it does not contain chemical additives. Afterward, microwave-assisted hydrolysis is adopted to enhance the monosaccharide yield of the macroalga for bioenergy production. The results show that the total sugar of Gracilaria undergoing acid hydrolysis alone is 28.72 g‧L−1. The total sugar content after alkaline pretreatment followed by acid hydrolysis is 32.64 g‧L−1, and it increases to 34.76 g‧L−1 after adding enzymes. Meanwhile, the higher heating value of Gracilaria increases from 10.884 MJ‧kg−1 to 12.620 MJ‧kg−1 after undergoing alkaline pretreatment. After the acid and enzyme hydrolysis processes, it increases to 15.164 MJ‧kg−1. The solid biofuel's calorific value increases by 39 % from the three-stage processes. The liquid product combined with Saccharomyces cerevisiae can produce bioethanol, while the produced hydrochar can be used as a solid fuel. This research promotes the development of macroalgal biomass for energy and environmental applications, thereby advancing the circular bioeconomy. © 2024 The Institution of Chemical Engineers

In this proposed research are analyzed general solutions and techniques to optimize the solar luminosity measurement by a designed smart system, as well as its usability by the solar energy conversion and its storing. However, many times, this kind of systems have not an optimal solar path tracker and as a consequence it can not be measured the full solar luminosity during all the day, therefore, in this work are designed optimal mathematical models and algorithms to enhance the solar path tracker according to measure solar luminosity and getting optimal solar energy conversion/storing, which is useful to study geographical conditions before to build solar energy conversion centers. As well as, in this research also is studied and suggested some techniques to get wireless data communication regarding the measured environmental variables, measured solar luminosity and stored electrical energy as a consequence of the solar energy conversion, which can be transmitted, so far away, to a central monitoring center by Radio Frequency (RF) waves. © 2024, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ).
