Optimizing dispersion of torrefied spent coffee grounds for enhanced biochar-EVA composite properties through sodium percarbonate-assisted treatment

This study aims to optimize biochar by combining 10 % sodium percarbonate with 90 % spent coffee grounds and torrefying at 300 °C for 30 min. Biochar enhances black color dispersion in a composite when blending the optimal biochar and ethylene vinyl acetate. The maximum carbon content of the optimal biochar is 59.97 %, exhibiting similar dispersion, packing density, pore size, and contact angle to carbon black. The optimal biochar's specific surface area and total pore volume are 7.12 m2·g−1 and 0.0018 cm3·g−1, respectively, 2.9 times and 1.2 times that of untreated torrefied spent coffee grounds with SP treated. The mechanical properties of the composite, which is blended with 15 wt% of the optimal biochar to ethylene vinyl acetate through trade-off analysis, indicate a tensile strength and Young's modulus of 1.03 MPa and 9.69 MPa, respectively. As the amount of blended optimal biochar increases, the tensile strength decreases while Young's modulus increases. Compared with a composite blended with the same 15 wt% of carbon black, the tensile strength and Young's modulus are 0.77 MPa and 9.55 MPa, respectively. In conclusion, the optimal biochar is a potential alternative material that could replace carbon black. This finding aligns with the developmental direction of achieving negative carbon emissions, promoting a circular economy and valorizing waste. © 2025 The Korean Society of Industrial and engineering Chemistry

Automatic liver tumor detection from computed tomography (CT) makes clinical examinations more accurate. However, deep learning-based detection algorithms are characterized by high sensitivity and low precision, which hinders diagnosis given that false-positive tumors must first be identified and excluded. These false positives arise because detection models incorrectly identify partial volume artifacts as lesions, which in turn stems from the inability to learn the perihepatic structure from a global perspective. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel slice-fusion method in which mining the global structural relationship between the tissues in the target CT slices and fusing the features of adjacent slices according to the importance of the tissues. Furthermore, we design a new network based on our slice-fusion method and Mask R-CNN detection model, called Pinpoint-Net. We evaluated proposed model on the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) dataset and our liver metastases dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our slice-fusion method not only enhance tumor detection ability via reducing the number of false-positive tumors smaller than 10mm, but also improve segmentation performance. Without bells and whistles, a single Pinpoint-Net showed outstanding performance in liver tumor detection and segmentation on LiTS test dataset compared with other state-of-the-art models. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

An optimal waste collection is a very complicated task in different countries. However, this task is more intricate, when there is not an organized procedure between people, government and technology. In this research it was studied and proposed strategies, to optimize the waste collection by technical suggestions, that were based on mathematical analysis and new technologies applications of sensors based on nanostructures due to this kind of sensors have good performance to measure physical variables in not simple places and conditions, such as around waste. Hence the reason, this work is prepared to contribute in the development of sensors based on nanostructures according to detect the physical variables: temperature, humidity, infrared reflection, moreover carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) gases, which help to monitor the consequences of a not correct waste *** dependence on central and local government rules of waste management, it could be possible to find solution about organized waste collection, in which every family and walkers in streets would have the task to select the organic and inorganic garbage before the government trucks take the contents of the garbage trash cans to the landfill garbage dumps. However, many times the trash cans are not taken on time by the government trucks and garbage from them are producing gases and decomposition that causes contamination that damages health. Therefore, in this work there are proposed designed intelligent sensors, which are fixed in the trash cans due to measure physical parameters to give alarm for administrators controllers of boxes and to enhance the garbage selections from homes and streets to the main garbage landfills of the city. In other side, there will not be right solution in the waste collection, no matter the high advantage technologies, while humans could not be sensitive under this problematic. With advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision technologies have seen significant progress, enabling applications like facial recognition, autonomous driving, and medical imaging. This study leverages the Multi-Camera Action Dataset (MCAD) and MediaPipe Pose to create a skeletal dataset for training a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to recognize 18 types of daily actions. Evaluation using confusion matrix and F1 score reveals that Action 16 (Object Carry) is often misclassified as Action 7 (Walk) due to similar leg movements, and Action 9 (Cell to Ear) as Action 1 (Wave) due to similar hand movements. Future work aims to enhance model accuracy and explore broader applications in physical activity and exercise analysis.

The increasing need for efficient monitoring of parameters in challenging industrial environments, such as basic sanitation, has led to the search for integrated and user-friendly solutions that can address specific challenges of this setting. This project aims to develop a solution to meet monitoring requirements in water treatment plants. The proposed solution involves the development of both hardware and software for collecting data from the water treatment process using sensors and transmitting this information to a server structure, database, and communication interface with the cloud-based user. The effectiveness of the proposed device is being evaluated in six water treatment units located in the states of Alagoas, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed solution is capable of monitoring the variables involved in the water flocculation stage and generating a comprehensive set of information about the process over time.

This case series cohort study investigated gait characteristics based on sensor data obtained from personalized active powered lower limb exoskeletal robot-assisted gait training and assessed its putative therapeutic effects in patients with stroke. Preliminary findings suggest that the application of the exoskeletal robot did not improve gait symmetry under robot assistance and could facilitate inter-joint coordination within the hip-knee joint movement on the affected side. These findings suggest that robot-assisted gait training could improve gait by guiding motor learning.

In this paper, the computation of a slip position is introduced for the grid-flux oriented control of a grid-connected doubly fed induction generator. For the DC excitation process in the rotor-side converter, the stator voltage is built at the stator terminals, which is related to the shaft speed and magnetizing current. Therefore, the corrected rotor electrical and slip angular speeds are received. Again, for the AC excitation process, the condition of the synchronizing is proposed by checking the slip position between estimated and real slip angles. If it is matching at the zero angles, the DC excitation is changed to the AC excitation with the real slip angle;in addition, the induced stator voltage and frequency are completely synchronized with the utility grid. For the grid-connected operation, the dq-axes rotor currents are also proposed to regulate the grid-flux and to control the electromagnetic torque. To assess the performance of the proposed control algorithm, computer modeling is developed, the simulation results are provided. © 2020 IEEE.

This article presents a performance investigation of a fault detection approach for bearings using different chaotic features with fractional order, where the five different chaotic features and three combinations are clearly described, and the detection achievement is organized. In the architecture of the method, a fractional order chaotic system is first applied to produce a chaotic map of the original vibration signal in the chaotic domain, where small changes in the signal with different bearing statuses might be present;then, a 3D feature map can be obtained. Second, five different features, combination methods, and corresponding extraction functions are introduced. In the third action, the correlation functions of extension theory used to construct the classical domain and joint fields are applied to further define the ranges belonging to different bearing statuses. Finally, testing data are fed into the detection system to verify the performance. The experimental results show that the proposed different chaotic features perform well in the detection of bearings with 7 and 21 mil diameters, and an average accuracy rate of 94.4% was achieved in all cases. © 2023 by the authors.

Thermodynamic processes are part of the road of a thermodynamic system, while it has an initial and final state of the thermal trajectory. Nevertheless, there are many intricate variables while the process goes from a transient to a steady state, in many contexts it causes imbalances in the final system, such as given losses in internal efficiencies of subsystems from the main system, furthermore the total losses in the system efficiency. Hence, in this work is proposed a procedure to optimize a general thermodynamic process which was evaluated in different applications that are part of primary manufacturing tasks like there are in Perú, even they can produce pollution or disturbances in nature conditions when it is not an optimal procedure to develop the thermodynamic process. This proposal procedure is based in mathematical modelling by correlation in theoretical analysis of the thermal system with analysis of experimental data through adaptive/predictive techniques, moreover, it was evaluated and suggested applications of new technologies as sensors/actuators based in nanostructures due to faster and robust characteristics as comparisons with traditional sensors/actuators. Development of Miniature Radio Frequency Ion Thruster with Inductively Coupled Plasma Source

This study investigated an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) as an ion source. This ICP source can produce high-density plasma and has high propellant utilization efficiency and low power consumption. The ICP source was induced by a 13.56-MHz electromagnetic field and by supplying argon propellant gas into the radio frequency (RF) ion thruster at low gas pressures. The ions were accelerated along the electrostatic field gradient by using a potential bias to form an ion beam. SIMION was used to simulate the trajectory and distribution of the ion beam. An electron-emitting neutralizer must be located downstream of the thruster to neutralize the potential of the ion thruster. A Langmuir probe was used to measure the electron temperature and plasma density. A Faraday cup was used to determine the ion current of the ion thruster. The parameters of the ICP ion source and the performance of the ion beam were evaluated using the measurement systems. The miniature RF ion thruster achieved 1200–1633 s of specific impulse and 7.6-13.8 mN of thrust at 80 W of total input power. The thruster efficiency was 10 %-13 %, and the mass utilization efficiency was 12 %–16 %. © 2023 The Aeronautical and Astronautical Society of the Republic of China. All rights reserved.
