Background: A preliminary randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the impact of a culturally tailored, group-based intervention for Latina breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and their caregivers on survivors’ quality of life (QOL) compared to usual care services provided by community-based organizations. Methods: This study randomized 136 Latina BCSs and 136 caregivers in Washington, DC;New York, New York;and San Jose, California to an eight-session culturally tailored coping and communication intervention (n = 70 dyads) or usual care support services via community-based organizations (n = 66 dyads). QOL domains (anxiety, depression, fatigue, physical functioning, and social functioning) were measured at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and 6 months post-intervention. Results: Among the 70 dyads in the intervention, 71.4% (n = 50) attended five or more of the eight sessions, which demonstrated high engagement;82% of participants were retained at 6 months. Results indicated clinically significant improvements in Latina BCSs’ reports of anxiety and fatigue at 6 months postintervention compared to BCSs in usual care;however, after adjustment for multiple comparisons, results were not statistically significant. Conclusions: A culturally tailored, group-based intervention for Latina BCSs and their caregivers led to clinically relevant but not statistically significant improvements in survivors’ anxiety and fatigue compared to usual services provided by community-based organizations. Interventions conducted in partnership with community-based organizations yield high engagement and retention;these types of collaborative approaches to psychosocial services have the potential to positively affect Latina BCSs’ QOL. © 2025 The Author(s). cancer published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of American cancer Society.

Global burden and trends in premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer: a population-based study

Background: Breast cancer has distinct causes, prognoses, and outcomes and effects in patients at premenopausal and postmenopausal ages. We sought to assess the global burden and trends in breast cancer by menopausal status. Methods: We did a population-based analysis of global breast cancer incidence and mortality among premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Menopausal status was defined using age as a proxy, whereby breast cancer cases or deaths at age 50 years or older were regarded as postmenopausal. Age-standardised breast cancer incidence and mortality in 2018 were calculated using GLOBOCAN data. Incidence trends for 1998–2012 were assessed in 44 populations from 41 countries using the cancer in Five Continents plus database, by calculating the annual average percent change. Findings: Approximately 645 000 premenopausal and 1·4 million postmenopausal breast cancer cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2018, with more than 130 000 and 490 000 deaths occurring in each menopausal group, respectively. Proportionally, countries with a low UNDP human development index (HDI) faced a greater burden of premenopausal breast cancer for both new cases and deaths compared with higher income countries. Countries with a very high HDI had the highest premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer incidence (30·6 and 253·6 cases per 100 000, respectively), whereas countries with low and medium HDI had the highest premenopausal and postmenopausal mortality, respectively (8·5 and 53·3 deaths per 100 000, respectively). When examining breast cancer trends, we noted significantly increasing age-standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) for premenopausal breast cancer in 20 of 44 populations and significantly increasing ASIRs for postmenopausal breast cancer in 24 of 44 populations. The growth exclusively at premenopausal ages largely occurred in high-income countries, whereas the increasing postmenopausal breast cancer burden was most notable in countries under transition. Introduction: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare subtype of large B-cell lymphoma first described in 1997 in a small cohort of persons living with HIV (HIV-PBL). Since then, it has been observed post-transplant (PTLD-PBL) and even in otherwise immunocompetent patients (IC-PBL). With no current well-defined standard of care, prognosis of PBL has historically been poor (median overall survival (OS) 7-15 months), although recent studies suggest modest improvements in survival. We aimed to better characterize disease characteristics, treatment patterns, and factors associated with outcomes in a large contemporary US cohort. Methods: Patients (pts) ≥ 18 years old with PBL diagnosed between 1/2005 and 12/2022 from 20 academic centers in the United States were identified. Data on pt and disease characteristics and treatment were collected from medical records. OS, progression-free survival (PFS), lymphoma-specific survival (LSS), treatment-related mortality (TRM), and non-relapse mortality (NRM) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox regression and Fine-Gray competing risk regression were used to assess the association between clinical factors and survival outcomes. Results: 331 pts with PBL were identified. The median age at diagnosis was 53 years (range 20-91y). 78% were male (n = 257). 46% had HIV-PBL (n = 151), 35% had IC-PBL (n = 117), 6% had PTLD-PBL (n = 20), and 13% had PBL with other immunosuppressed states (n = 43). 66% of pts were White (n = 219), 18% were Black/African American (n = 58), and 31% were Hispanic (n = 104). 74% of Black/African American and 52% of Hispanic pts were diagnosed with HIV-PBL, compared with only 37% of White pts. The median age at diagnosis was greater in the IC-PBL group (68y) than in the HIV-PBL and PTLD-PBL groups (46y and 55y, respectively; p < 0.001). BACKGROUND: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is higher among minority populations, including individuals of Mexican ethnic descent. Whether alignment to healthy dietary patterns is associated with lower risk of metabolic syndrome in this population is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the associations between a priori diet quality scores and risk of metabolic syndrome and its components among postmenopausal women of Mexican ethnic descent. METHODS: A total of 334 women of Mexican ethnic descent who participated in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) observational study without metabolic syndrome or diabetes at baseline (1993-1998) were included. Baseline diets were scored with the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2010), the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS), and the traditional Mexican Diet (MexD) score. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used to test the associations between baseline diet quality and risk of metabolic syndrome and its individual components at follow-up (2012-2013). RESULTS: Approximately 16% of women met the criteria for metabolic syndrome at follow-up. None of the diet quality indices were associated with risk of metabolic syndrome. However, higher vs lower DASH scores were associated with lower waist circumference (85.2 vs 88.0 cm) and glucose concentrations (90.0 vs 95.1 mg/dL), and higher HDL cholesterol (62.6 vs 59.0 mg/dL), while higher vs lower HEI-2010 scores were associated with lower waist circumference (83.9 vs 88.1 cm), triglycerides (103 vs 117 mg/dL) and glucose concentrations (89.5 vs 94.4 mg/dL), and higher HDL cholesterol levels (63.9 vs 58.5 mg/dL). CONCLUSIONS: Diet quality was not associated with risk of metabolic syndrome in this population. PURPOSE:We aim to construct a nomogram to predict breast cancer survival and guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in China. PATIENTS AND METHODS:A total of 5,504 breast cancer patients from the Tianjin Breast cancer Cases Cohort were included. Multivariable Cox regression was used to investigate the factors associated with overall survival (OS) and a nomogram was constructed based on these prognostic factors. The nomogram was internal and external validated and the performance was evaluated by area under the curve (AUC) and calibration curve. The partial score was also constructed and stratified them into low, moderate and high-risk subgroups for death according to the tripartite grouping method. Multivariate Cox regression analysis and the propensity score matching method were respectively used to test the association between adjuvant chemotherapy and OS in different risk subgroups. RESULTS:Age, diameter, histological differentiation, lymph node metastasis, estrogen, and progesterone receptor were incorporated into the nomogram and validation results showed this nomogram was well-calibrated to predict the 3-year [AUC =74.1%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 70.1-78.0%] and 5-year overall survival [AUC =72.3%; 95% CI: 69.6-75.1%]. Adjuvant chemotherapy was negatively associated with death in high risk subgroup [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.37-0.77; <0.001]. However, no significant association were found in groups with low (HR=1.47; 95% CI: 0.52-4.19; =0.47) and moderate risk (HR=0.78; 95% CI: 0.42-1.48; =0.45). The 1:1 PSM generated 822 pairs of well-matched patients and Kaplan-Meier showed the high-risk patients could benefit from chemotherapy, whereas low risk and moderate risk subjects did not appear to benefit from chemotherapy. CONCLUSION:Not all of the breast cancer patients benefit equally from chemotherapy. Cervical cancer is a preventable disease for which vaccines are available to provide long-term protection against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This systematic literature review (SLR) was performed to summarize the efficacy, effectiveness, impact, duration of protection, and safety profile of four licensed HPV vaccines against infection, precursor lesions, and cervical cancer. Data was extracted from published reports. The search resulted in 1,136 studies, of which 54 were selected for this review. A substantial decrease in the prevalence of oncogenic HPV types, high-grade cervical lesions, and cervical cancer was found in countries with high vaccine coverage and routine vaccination programs. Post-licensure studies of HPV vaccines have reported high efficacy, effectiveness, and health impact across settings and age groups. Studies emphasize vaccination in younger age groups. These findings may inform future discussions about HPV vaccination strategies. © 2025, GSK.
