Dear Editor,In the European region,which shares 22.8%of the global cancer burden for 10%of the global population,there were around 4.4 million new cancer cases and 1.9 million deaths from cancer in 2020[1].The reasons for the high cancer incidence rates are complex;however,diet and dietary components are among the main contributors to cancer risk[2].In modern-day living,a growing proportion of people include in their diets ultra-processed *** of food processing and home-prepared foods are so-called dietary advanced glycation endproducts(AGEs),which are reactive metabolites emerging during the breakdown of reducing *** production is preponderant in dry high-heat processes(e.g.,baking,roasting);hence foods such as cakes,crisps,crackers,cereal products,meat and meat-derived products represent a major source of dietary AGEs[3].

Aims The national incidence, risk factors, and associated mortality of atrial fibrillation (AF) in breast cancer patients are unknown. Methods and results Using the Surveillance, epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare-linked database, we identified females, ≥66 years old, with a new primary diagnosis of breast cancer from 2007 through 2014. These patients were individually matched 1:1 to Medicare enrolees without cancer, and each pair was followed for 1 year to identify a primary outcome of AF. Cumulative incidence was calculated using competing risk survival statistics. Following this, identifying risk factors of AF among breast cancer patients was conducted using the adjusted Cox proportional hazards model. Finally, Kaplan–Meier methods and adjusted Cox proportional hazards modelling were performed to estimate mortality in breast cancer patients with incident and prevalent AF. This study included 85 423 breast cancer patients. Among these 9425 (11.0%) had AF diagnosis prior to the breast cancer diagnosis. New-onset AF was diagnosed in 2993 (3.9%) patients in a 1-year period after the breast cancer diagnosis [incidence 3.3%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.0–3.5%, at 1 year; higher rate in the first 60 days (0.6%/month)]. Comparatively, the incidence of new-onset AF in matched non-cancer controls was 1.8% (95% CI 1.6–2.0%). Apart from traditional demographic and cardiovascular risk factors, breast cancer stage was strongly associated with the development of AF [American Joint Committee on cancer (AJCC) Stage II/III/IV vs. I: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.51/2.63/4.21, respectively]. New-onset AF after breast cancer diagnosis (aHR 3.00) is associated with increased 1-year cardiovascular mortality. During the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,the Japanese government implemented several infection control measures,such as states of emergency(SoE)and school closures,and encouraged universal masking and hand *** activity restrictions and improved hygiene were found to be associated with declines in the incidence of infuenza during the 2019–2020 winter season[1].Prior studies have found that the incidence of seven pediatric infections,such as pharyngoconjunctivitis and varicella,decreased during and after the school closures in Japan[2].As activity restrictions continue to be lifted,there is growing concern that pediatric infections may suddenly return given that the pool of susceptible children increased during the pandemic[3].In this study,we use national infectious disease sentinel data from January 2012 to October 2021 to assess changes in the reported number of pediatric infections in Japan during the COVID-19 *** hypothesize that the reporting of many infectious diseases decreased during the early stages of the pandemic but ultimately returned to normal when activity restrictions were lifted.

Mortality Risk from Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease Associated with Short-Term Co-Exposure to Summer Heatwave and Ozone

Background:Summer heat and ozone may pose a great threat to public health amid climate warming, however, their interactive effects on deaths from chronic ischemic heart disease (CIHD) have not been evaluated in existing investigations. Methods:We carried out a province-wide, individual-level case-crossover study by analyzing 33770 CIHD deaths occurring in warm season across Jiangsu, eastern China, between 2016 and 2019. Spatially-resolved estimates of maximum 8-hour average ozone concentrations and air temperatures were estimated on case days and control days at the residential address. Heatwave events were defined using multiple temperature thresholds and durations. Conditional logistic regression model was employed to assess the odds ratio and its 95% confidence interval of CIHD death associated with heatwave and ozone exposure. Stratified analyses were performed to compare ozone-related risks on heatwave days versus non-heatwave days, and heatwave-related risks on low-ozone days versus high-ozone days. Additive interactive effects were testified using multiple metrics including relative excess odds due to interaction (REOI), proportion attributable to interaction (AP), and synergy index (SI).Results:In the overall population, the odds of CIHD mortality was 1.010 (95% CI: 1.007–1.014) for a 10-µg/m3 rise in warm-season ozone at lag-01 day, and ranged from 1.20 (95% CI: 1.15–1.25) to 1.64 (95% CI: 1.54–1.73) for heatwaves under various definitions. Stratified analyses showed intensified ozone-related CIHD risks on heatwave days compared to non-heatwave days, and higher heatwave-related risks on high-ozone days than low-ozone days. We observed significant synergistic interactive effects of heatwave and high-level ozone on CIHD mortality (SI >1), where the excess risk was elevated by 10%–19% (REOI >0) under co-exposure scenarios and 8%–11% (AP >0) of the odds could be attributed to the additive interaction. Nonpharmaceutical interventions(NPIs)have been commonly deployed to prevent and control the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),resulting in a worldwide decline in influenza ***,the influenza risk in China warrants cautious *** conducted a cross-sectional,seroepidemiological study in Shandong Province,Northern China in *** inhibition was performed to test antibodies against four influenza vaccine strains.A combination of descriptive and meta-analyses was adopted to compare the seroprevalence of influenza antibodies before and during the COVID-19 *** overall seroprevalence values against A/H1N1pdm09,A/H3N2,B/Victoria,and B/Yamagata were 17.8%(95%CI 16.2%–19.5%),23.5%(95%CI 21.7%–25.4%),7.6%(95%CI 6.6%–8.7%),and 15.0(95%CI 13.5%–16.5%),respectively,in the study *** overall vaccination rate was extremely low(2.6%).Our results revealed that antibody titers in vaccinated participants were significantly higher than those in unvaccinated individuals(P<0.001).Notably,the meta-analysis showed that antibodies against A/H1N1pdm09 and A/H3N2 were significantly low in adults after the COVID-19 pandemic(P<0.01).Increasing vaccination rates and maintaining NPIs are recommended to prevent an elevated influenza risk in China.

Although genome-wide association studies have identified more than eighty genetic variants associated with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)risk,biological mechanisms of these variants remain largely *** integrating a large-scale genotype data of 15581 lung adenocarcinoma(AD)cases,8350 squamous cell carcinoma(SqCC)cases,and 27355 controls,as well as multiple transcriptome and epigenomic databases,we conducted histology-specific meta-analyses and functional annotations of both reported and novel susceptibility *** identified 3064 credible risk variants for NSCLC,which were overrepresented in enhancer-like and promoter-like histone modification peaks as well as DNase I hypersensitive *** factor enrichment analysis revealed that USF1 was AD-specific while CREB1 was *** annotation and genebased analysis implicated 894 target genes,including 274 specifics for AD and 123 for SqCC,which were overrepresented in somatic driver genes(ER=1.95,P=0.005).Pathway enrichment analysis and Gene-Set Enrichment Analysis revealed that AD genes were primarily involved in immune-related pathways,while SqCC genes were homologous recombination deficiency *** results illustrate the molecular basis of both wellstudied and new susceptibility loci of NSCLC,providing not only novel insights into the genetic heterogeneity between AD and SqCC but also a set of plausible gene targets for post-GWAS functional experiments.

Accurate and inaccurate beliefs about cancer risk factors among Spanish-preferring adults in the United States

Objective: To characterize inaccurate and accurate beliefs about cancer risk factors held among Spanish-preferring adults in the United States. Methods: From a national probability panel, we surveyed 196 Hispanic adults who prefer completing questionnaires in Spanish. We also used data from a representative sample of 1200 adults in the US to compare belief acceptance. Results: Many less accepted accurate beliefs about cancer risk factors related to topics like fruit/vegetable consumption, weight loss, and alcohol use. Several inaccurate beliefs were widely held, with some being more accepted in the Spanish-preferring sample than the general US adult sample. Higher levels of self-reported media literacy and information scanning associated with more acceptance of both accurate and inaccurate beliefs. Access to the internet at home associated with discernment between accurate and inaccurate beliefs about cancer risk factors. Conclusion: Acceptance of accurate beliefs and rejection of inaccurate beliefs varied across potential cancer risk factors. Future Spanish-language public health messaging should address these belief inconsistencies when providing up-to-date cancer-related recommendations or correcting inaccurate information in the public communication environment. Innovation: Our study provides comprehensive information about cancer beliefs among Spanish-preferring adults in the United States, which was not previously available, and find that media literacy is a concept likely to be important to consider when putting together intervention tools to combat misinformation. © 2024 The Authors

Association of dynamic changes in serum levels of HBV DNA and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma

We aimed to examine the risk of HCC associated with the long-term change patterns in HBV DNA levels. We conducted a longitudinal study of 6,301 participants with chronic HBV infection (CHB) from October 2012 to June 2019 and measured serum levels of HBV DNA at enrollment and during follow-up. The dynamic change patterns of HBV DNA were identified by group-based trajectory models. The associations between change patterns of HBV DNA and HCC were estimated using Cox regression models. During 35,112 person-years of follow-up, 182 participants developed HCC (518.34 per 105 person-years). Five trajectory groups of repeated measurement of HBV DNA were identified. The risk of HCC was significantly higher for the “high, fast-declined” group whose HBV DNA spontaneously decreased from > 2000 IU/mL at baseline compared with those with persistent undetected HBV DNA (reference group; 963.96 per 105 person-years, HR = 2.62, 95% CI, 1.82 to 3.77, P < 0.001). In addition, the “rebound” group whose HBV DNA level increased from undetectable level to > 20,000 IU/mL from baseline to the end of follow-up also showed an obviously higher cumulative HCC incidence rate (1193.29 per 105 person-years, HR = 4.17, 95% CI, 1.87 to 9.31, P < 0.001). The positive association remained stable after taking the potential effect of time-dependent antiviral treatment into account. Significant variability in serum levels of HBV DNA presented during long-term follow-up. Regular monitoring of serum levels of HBV DNA and antiviral treatment are required for the clinical management of CHB patients, as well as those with undetected HBV DNA.

Lifestyle interventions targeting energy balance (ie, diet, exercise) are critical for optimizing the health and well-being of cancer survivors. Despite their benefits, access to these interventions is limited, especially in underserved populations, including older people, minority populations and those living in rural and remote areas. Telehealth has the potential to improve equity and increase access. This article outlines the advantages and challenges of using telehealth to support the integration of lifestyle interventions into cancer care. We describe 2 recent studies, GO-EXCAP and weSurvive, as examples of telehealth lifestyle intervention in underserved populations (older people and rural cancer survivors) and offer practical recommendations for future implementation. Innovative approaches to the use of telehealth-delivered lifestyle intervention during cancer survivorship offer great potential to reduce cancer burden. © The Author(s) 2023. Predictors of distress among individuals with cancer reporting physical problems

Purpose: Psychological distress among cancer patients is linked to adverse outcomes. The enhanced Distress Thermometer (eDT) allows patients to self-report distress levels on a Likert scale (0–10) and select from a list of physical, emotional, family, and psychological problems contributing to their distress. The physical problem list includes symptoms and functional impairments. Little is known about the predictive validity of the eDT physical problem list. This study aims to evaluate predictors of risk associated with distress scores measured by the eDT among patients with physical problems. Methods: Patient medical records with significant distress were reviewed, defined by eDT scores ≥ 6 with any physical problems or scores < 6 with > 3 problems selected. Patients were categorized into three groups based on eDT score: mild (1–3), moderate (4–6), and severe (7–10). The chi-square test assessed differences in demographic and clinical variables across distress categories. Linear regression evaluated associations between distress scores and significant predictive variables. Results: Data from 549 patients showed severe distress was common among head and neck, breast, skin, and colorectal cancers. Significant predictors of distress included age, gender, geography, and number of physical problems (NPP) reported. Higher distress was associated with individuals younger, female, urban, and reporting more physical problems. The regression model explained 15% of the variance in distress scores. Conclusions: Age, geography, gender, and NPP were factors influencing distress in cancer patients. Future research is recommended to develop more comprehensive clinical and demographic profiles to better identify cancer patients at risk for high distress and unmet supportive care needs. © This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US;foreign copyright protection may apply 2025.
