Railway interlocking systems can be implemented as distributed systems, where each part of a station is handled by a separate logical unit. The logical units of such systems form a network and communicate by interchanging messages. Such distributed architectures are well known in large industrial control systems. There are several design practices and also algorithmic task partitioning methods that are applicable in distributed control systems. Some of such methods can also be adapted in designing of railway interlocking systems as well. In the case of such systems, the communication time between components must be kept low. Namely each separate controller in a given route must be able to exchange their internal state within a limited time in order to permit the train movement authorization. This limitation could cause high traffic load, if every logical unit would be interconnected with each other. Therefore, the main goal of the minimization is to reduce the number of connections between logical units. This can achieved by distributing and assigning the topological railway objects to certain logical units. © 2024 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.

Non-invasive estimation of chlorophyll content in plants plays an important role in precision agriculture. This task may be tackled using hyperspectral imaging that acquires numerous narrow bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, which may reflect subtle features of the plant, and inherently offers spatial scalability. Such imagery is, however, high-dimensional, therefore it is challenging to transfer from the imaging device, store and investigate. We propose a machine learning pipeline for estimating chlorophyll content from hyperspectral data. It benefits from the Savitzky-Golay filtering to smooth the (potentially noisy) spectral curves, and from gradient-based features extracted from such a smoothed signal. The experiments revealed that our approach significantly outperforms the state of the art according to the widely-established estimation quality metrics obtained for four chlorophyll-related parameters. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The control of overhead cranes is a benchmark problem, since it is an underactuated mechanism and its mathematical model is nonlinear. During operation the mass of the load is unknown, representing an uncertainty in the inertial parameters, which requires robustness of the controlled system. Our paper proposes a novel robust control method, that combines the differentially flat property of the dynamics with the robustness of the sliding mode control. The sliding surface is constructed to ensure the tracking of the configuration variables whose accelerations is calculated using the flatness property of the dynamic model. This formulation also allows achieving the matching conditions of the parameter uncertainties. Considering a simplified overhead crane model where the load motion is restricted in a vertical plane, two sliding surfaces are defined for the rope angle and rope length, since the cart position can be calculated from the previous two. The suggested control method is successfully validated in simulations as well as using a reduced-size overhead crane. For the real crane, the rope angle was estimated by utilizing the dynamical model, which uses the estimated cart acceleration. © 2024 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested;however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV - so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime. © 2023 IEEE.

control design for trajectory tracking of multi-rotor aerial vehicles (MAVs) represents a challenging task due to the under-actuated property, highly nonlinear and cross-coupled dynamics, modeling errors, parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. This paper presents the design of the first order sliding mode control (FOSMC) algorithm for trajectory tracking of the octo-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the presence of various disturbances. The highly nonlinear octo-rotor UAV dynamics is considered via the generalized framework for MAVs modeling. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is presented using the Lyapunov based approach. The developed FOSMC exhibits finite-time convergence of the octo-rotor trajec-tories to the sliding manifold and the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium in the presence of vanishing disturbances. Simulation studies show a superior tracking performance and robustness properties of the FOSMC in comparison with the concurrent techniques for trajectory tracking of the octo-rotor UAV in the presence of internal and external disturbances. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study we demonstrate the appropriate use of statistically based filtering methods for feature selection and describe the application to Heart Rate Variability (HRV) features used to distinguish between arrhythmia and normal sinus rhythm electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The initial set of HRV features is evaluated using both correlation and statistical significance tests. Normality assumption is assessed for each feature in order to select appropriate correlation methods and significance tests. In addition, the impact of outliers on the statistical test results is illustrated by an explorative analysis of correlation before and after outlier removal. Finally, a reduced set of features is selected, and the decision process guided by correlation and statistical significance test results is described and discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a detailed study of the impact of temperature on the performance of a nonlinear electromagnetic vibration energy harvester, which is applied in autonomous power systems. The variability of material properties under the influence of temperature, such as stiffness, damping, and magnetic induction, significantly affects the operational characteristics of the device. A mathematical model accounting for these factors, including linear and quadratic temperature coefficients, optimized using a genetic algorithm, is presented in the article. The simulation results were compared with experimental data, showing good agreement, particularly in the range of frequency bandwidth and output voltage. It was demonstrated that higher temperatures lead to a reduction in mechanical and magnetic stiffness, resulting in decreased energy conversion efficiency. © 2025 The Author(s).

The paper evaluates statistical significance of the differences in the feature values necessary to differentiate the signals corresponding to cardiac arrhythmia (AR) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The initial set of heart rate variability (HRV) features includes time and frequency domain metrics, as well as geometric metrics based on the Poincare diagram. Due to non-uniformity of the heart rate signal, frequency domain features are calculated using two approaches: the Lomb-Scargle method for spectral analysis for non-uniform signals, and Welch method for uniform signals, but after the signal interpolation and resampling. Selection of an appropriate statistical test was depending on the distribution of feature values. Normal distribution allowed use of parametric ANOVA test and otherwise non-parametric Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test were used. The statistical tests indicated statistically significant difference between the two observed groups of signals of interest with respect to the evaluated feature. The success of the classification depends on the well-chosen features according to their importance. In the paper, statistical tests resulted in selection of 27 features out of the initial 51. The proposed set of features could be used for the classification between the AR and AF signals to assist diagnosis of the mentioned heart diseases. © 2023 IEEE.

This article presents a wide, proprietary range of Emotiv Epoc Flex Gel headset applications for EEG signal measurement. It is about its use in systems involving artificial intelligence, such as artificial neural networks and expert systems. The constantly developing field of biomedical engineering as well as newer and more advanced BCI (brain-computer interface) systems require their designers to constantly develop and search for various innovative methods used in their creation. In response to practical requirements and the possibility of using the system in real conditions, the authors propose an advanced solution using EEG signal analysis (electroencephalography). An AI-based approach to designing the BCI system was used for advanced signal analysis. The article contains a detailed description of two applications based on artificial intelligence using EEG signals. The first one, for controlling a mobile robot using mental commands. The second one, on the other hand, for controlling a mobile robot with verification in the form of an EMG signal. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the integration of the Emotiv Epoc Flex Kit with proprietary AI systems and its significant impact on the field. © 2023 CEUR-WS. This study presents an advanced data analysis for developing a predictive model for the gross operating profit time series, using monthly data from two Polish hotels compliant with the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI). Emphasizing the USALI data, the research utilized the Nonlinear Autoregressive Neural Network with exogenous inputs (NARX) to capture both linear and nonlinear trends. Extensive testing involved eight neural network learning methods across double layer networks with 5 to 30 neurons in the hidden layer and various sizes of delay parameter.
