Digital road maps have gained fundamental role in population's daily life, so they need to be accurate and up-to-date. A viable solution is to generate maps by processing GPS data. However, one of the most challenging tasks regarding this approach is how to extract road centerlines from the cloud of georeferenced GPS points. The literature presents various methods that do it, but none have been found that is prepared for the continuous update of the map and refinement of its roads' accuracy. In this context, the objective of this work is to propose a method to identify road centerlines using an evolutive algorithm in order to generate and update road maps. This work uses as source of data GPS traces collected by smartphones. Although suitable to obtain a large amount of georeferenced data, these devices bring the additional problem of identifying the transport vehicle used along each trace. Preliminary results indicate that the method's performance is satisfactory, with an average variation of 2.95 meters in relation to satellite images.

Agile Principles and Achievement of Success in Software Development: A Quantitative Study in Brazilian Organizations

The principles of agile development emerge as potential solutions to numerous design problems of software development. In this context, this paper aims to identify and analyze the profile of Brazilian software producers regarding the use of agile principles and their potential to achieve success in producing software. This is a quantitative study made with professionals from the software industry. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using technical descriptive analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis. Based on the categorization of factors, three software organizations profiles have been obtained regarding the use of agile principles and the scope of success in producing software. The implications of this study are that organizations with the highest success rates in software are the same as those that have higher rates for capacity in terms of team, culture, communication with the client, environmental configuration and relationships with external partners. Organizations that used agile software development principles achieved success in software development, but it cannot be said that the use of agile principles alone can guarantee the achievement of such success in software development. Additionally, relationships with external partners, although not contemplated in the related studies investigated, was shown to be a critical factor for success in software development and, therefore, relevant to the agile software development field. In conclusion, this study is relevant because it helps to improve our understanding of the use of agile principles in the development of software and whether these principles are associated with obtaining success in software production; therefore, it explores a new factor that has not been observed previously.

The TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for Interative Multi-criteria Decision Making) method has recently been extended firstly to fuzzy and next to intuitionistic fuzzy environments with promising results. In this paper, we further consider the extension of TODIM to interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) environments. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach to multi-criteria decision making. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented method.

Path tracking in wireless and mobile environments is a fundamental technology for ubiquitous location-based services (LBSs). In particular, it is very challenging to develop highly accurate and cost-efficient tracking systems applied to the anonymous areas where the floor plans are not available for security and privacy reasons. This paper proposes a novel path tracking approach for large Wi-Fi areas based on the time-stamped unlabeled mobility map which is constructed from Smith-Waterman received signal strength (RSS) measurement matching. Instead of conventional location fingerprinting, we construct mobility map with the technique of dimension reduction from the raw measurement space into a low-dimensional embedded manifold. The feasibility of our proposed approach is verified by the real-world experiments in the HKUST campus Wi-Fi networks, sMobileNet. The experimental results prove that our approach is adaptive and capable of achieving an adequate precision level in path tracking. © 2014 Mu Zhou et al.

In this paper three computational models for the study of the evolution of cooperation under cultural propagation are studied: Kin Selection, Direct Reciprocity and Indirect Reciprocity. Two analyzes are reported, one comparing their behavior between them and a second one identifying the impact that different parameters have in the model dynamics. The results of these analyzes illustrate how game transitions may occur depending of some parameters within the models and also explain how agents adapt to these transitions by individually choosing their attachment to a cooperative attitude. These parameters regulate how cooperation can self-organize under different circumstances. The emergence of the evolution of cooperation as a result of the agent's adapting processes is also discussed. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Selection and prioritization of software requirements represents an area of interest in Search-Based Software Engineering (SBSE) and its main focus is finding and selecting a set of requirements that may be part of a software release. This paper uses a systematic review to investigate which SBSE approaches have been proposed to address software requirement selection and prioritization problems. The search strategy identified 30 articles in this area and they were analyzed for 18 previously established quality criteria. The results of this systematic review show which aspects of the requirements selection and prioritization problems were addressed by researchers, the methods approaches and search techniques currently adopted to address these problems, and the strengths and weaknesses of each of these techniques. The review provides a map showing the gaps and trends in the field, which can be useful to guide further research. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The use of IT applications in teaching and learning had changed the way students learn using e-learning which was more modern, effective and efficient. This paper will explain the result for e-learning system performance evaluation based on faculties and students perspective using the Web-Based Evaluation model of E-Learning system. Number of samples used in this study were 348 students and 270 lecturers who use e-learning system namely Binusmaya. Results obtained from this study were the characteristics and problems of e-learning systems that were complained by users as well as an alternative solution to solve these problems and suggest some recommendations. © 2013 IEEE.

Images/videos captured from optical devices are usually degraded by turbid media such as haze, smoke, fog, rain and snow. Haze is the most common problem in outdoor scenes because of the atmosphere conditions. This paper proposes a novel single image-based dehazing framework to remove haze artifacts from images, where we propose two novel image priors, called the pixel-based dark channel prior and the pixel-based bright channel prior. Based on the two priors with the haze optical model, we propose to estimate atmospheric light via haze density analysis. We can then estimate transmission map, followed by refining it via the bilateral filter. As a result, high-quality haze-free images can be recovered with lower computational complexity compared with the state-of-the-art approach based on patch-based dark channel prior. ©2013 Optical Society of America.
