Molecular dynamics simulation is an important tool for studying materials microstructure evolution under radiation effects. It is difficult to simulate atomic diffusion in materials owing to the time-scale limitations of the molecular dynamics method. Accelerated molecular dynamics has been developed as a solution and the parallel replica method is the simplest and most accurate of the accelerated dynamics techniques. The simulation time scale can reach several orders more than the direct molecular dynamics, while retaining the complete atomic detail. In parallel replica method, the entire system is replicated on each of M available parallel or distributed processors, it is in line with the characteristics of high-performance parallel computing and can be optimized from the program level.

The development of fault-tolerant quantum processors relies on the ability to control noise. A particularly insidious form of noise is temporally correlated or non-Markovian noise. By combining randomized benchmarking with supervised machine learning algorithms, we develop a method to learn the details of temporally correlated noise. In particular, we can learn the time-independent evolution operator of system plus bath and this leads to (i) the ability to characterize the degree of non-Markovianity of the dynamics and (ii) the ability to predict the dynamics of the system even beyond the times we have used to train our model. We exemplify this by implementing our method on a superconducting quantum processor. Our experimental results show a drastic change between the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes for the learning accuracies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs), principally social distancing, in combination with effective vaccines, aspire to develop a protective immunity shield against pandemics and particularly against the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, an agent-based network model with small-world topology is employed to find optimal policies against pandemics, including social distancing and vaccination strategies. The agents’ states are characterized by a variation of the SEIR model (susceptible, exposed, infected, recovered). To explore optimal policies, an equation-free method is proposed to solve the inverse problem of calibrating an agent's infection rate with respect to the vaccination efficacy. The results show that prioritizing the first vaccine dose in combination with mild social restrictions, is sufficient to control the pandemic, with respect to the number of deaths. Moreover, for the same mild number of social contacts, we find an optimal vaccination ratio of 0.85 between older people of ages >65 compared to younger ones. © 2022 The Author(s)

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly.

CURING high-performance STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES BY ELECTRON-BEAM RADIATION

He heads the Radiation Applications Section of the Radiation Effects Branch Radiation Technology Division in which studies of interaction of radiation with materials has been the major effort for both the improvement of materials by radiation processing and the degradation rates of materials in combined severe environments. He graduated from the University of Toledo in 1948 and was previously employed at the Dow Chemical Company and the Dow Corning Corporation. He is registered as a Certified Professional Chemist and is a Senior Member of the IEEE where he serves as Head of the Radiation Effects Committee of the Electrical Insulation Society. Other memberships are in the ASTM ACS and Sigma Xi. Professor Walter Brenner:of the Department of Applied Sciences New York University has over twenty five years experience in the fields of high performance composites flame retardant polymers and specialty coatings. He has been a pioneer in the development of electron beam irradiation processing of fiber reinforced laminates adhesives and coatings. He has also worked on the development and application of heat resistant electrical insulation for wire and cable applications. He is the author and co-author of over 60 papers and three books.

Electron-beam curing of structural adhesives offers a number of potentially attractive features as compared to currently used thermal curing techniques. Probably the most significant feature is the capability of this technique to effect cures at ambient temperatures in remarkably short periods of time using only contact pressure. Radiation curing also helps to avoid residual thermal stresses which are often induced by curing at elevated temperatures. Other benefits which are of practical value include: less energy consumption due to the elimination of autoclaves and curing ovens, simplified processing at essentially contact pressure, and avoidance of air pollution as no volatile products are evolved during the cure of the totally reactive adhesive composites. Experiments have been carried out to identify polymer systems for adhesive applications which can be cured via radiation and to optimize their performance when exposed to various environmental conditions including moisture, solvents and high temperature aging. Aluminum lap-shear test specimens which were cured with electron beam radiation over a wide range of dosages, were employed for these studies. Data have been developed on a number of candidate structural adhesive systems such as polyesters, vinyl esters, acrylics and modified polymides. Preliminary conclusions are presented on the performance of these systems and recommendations are made for optimizing this technique for curing prototype assemblies with industrial electron beam accelerator equipment. Commercially available electron accelerators having magnetic beam-sweeping heads can be used for assembly-line processing, and remote-controlled linac heads can be directed for localized processes such as spot-bonding, weld-bonding, applying repair patches and installing stiffeners on aircraft, missiles and high-performance ships.

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

Portion size selection is an indicator of appetite and within younger adults, is predicted by factors such as expected satiety, liking and motivations to achieve an ideal sensation of fullness (i.e., implicit satiety goals). Currently, there is limited research available on the determinants of portion size selection within older adults. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the relationship between individual differences in implicit satiety goals, food-related expectations, and portion size selection in older adults. Free-living older adult Singaporeans (N = 115;N_males = 62;age: M = 66.21 years, SD = 4.78, range = 60–83 years) participated as part of the Brain, Ageing, Microbiome, Muscle, Bone, and Exercise Study (BAMMBE). Participants completed questionnaires on their subjective requirements for experiencing different states of satiety and food-related expectations (i.e., liking, how filling) as well as a computerised portion size selection task. Using a multiple regression, we found that goals to feel comfortably full (B = 3.08, SE = 1.04, t = 2.96, p =.004) and to stop hunger (B = −2.25, SE = 0.82, t = −2.75, p =.007) significantly predicted larger portion size selection (R² = 0.24, F(4,87) = 6.74, p <.001). Larger portion sizes (R² = 0.53, F(5,90) = 20.58, p <.001) were also predicted by greater expected satiety (B = 0.47, SE = 0.09, t = 5.15, p <.001) and lower perceptions of how filling foods are (B = −2.92, SE = 0.77, t = −3.79, p <.001) but not liking (B = −0.09, SE = 0.91, t = −0.10, p =.925) or frequency (B = −18.42, SE = 16.91, t = −1.09, p =.279) of consumption of target foods. Comparing our findings to results of studies conducted with younger adults suggests the influence of factors such as satiety related goals on portion size selection may change with ageing while the influence of other factors (e.g., expected satiety/fullness delivered by foods) may remain consistent. This Letter presents a search for new resonances with mass larger than 250 GeV, decaying to a Z boson and a photon. The dataset consists of an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z bosons are identified through their decays either to charged, light, lepton pairs (e⁺e⁻, μ⁺μ⁻) or to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with the expected background in the whole mass range investigated and upper limits are set on the production cross section times decay branching ratio to Zγ of a narrow scalar boson with mass between 250 GeV and 2.75 TeV. © 2016 The Author(s)
