Interaction of visual interface and academic levels with young students’ anxiety, playfulness, and enjoyment in programming for robot control

Young students’ engagement in computer programming has been recognized as a crucial issue in educational settings nowadays. In this study, a block-based programming approach was employed to investigate its impacts on the learning anxiety, playfulness, and enjoyment of young students with different academic levels. A total of 175 10th graders participated in the study. The participants were asked to use block-based programming to control a robot. The experimental results show that the block-based programming, which engages students in programming tasks using a building block-like visual interface, significantly reduced the students’ learning anxiety while also promoting their playfulness and enjoyment in the perspectives of computational thinking. It was also found that the block-based programming benefited the low- and medium-achievement more than the high-achievement students did. Therefore, it was inferred that block-based programming would be useful for those people who have worse learning performance in conventional programming learning so they need further remedial instruction. Moreover, male students had lower learning anxiety and higher playfulness than the female students. Influence of Yuanfen Attribution on Job Performance: An Exploration of the Roles of Self-Efficacy and Well Being

Yuan, also referred to as yuanfen, is a unique concept in Eastern culture. In Chinese-speaking societies, yuan is often used to explain guanxi-related problems, and it constitutes a thinking pattern that is applied when solving problems involving interpersonal interactions (Hsu, 2012). In Chinese-speaking communities, yuan is the basis of a unique attribution model for explaining the results of interactions between people in a complex world (Chang & Jou, 2004;Lee & Chen, 2006). The present study proposes yuan-attribution and fen-attribution models on the basis of attribution theory. Yuan reflects a belief in fate and an external locus of control;random encounters, interpersonal relationships, and everyday opinions are considered to be predestined conclusions. In Eastern societies, this mindset leads to the adoption of a form of psychological defense that is based on the Mandate of Heaven and a belief in yuan (Chang & Jou, 2004;Wang, 1985). Consequently, they employ an operating mechanism characterized by acceptance and adaptation to achieve psychological selfadaptation. Yuan-attribution refers to an inclination to blame external factors and exhibit social indifference when specific outcomes occur in environments and under circumstances that are unpredictable and uncontrollable. Fen reflects a belief in voluntarism and an internal locus of control. Individuals who believe in fen consider themselves to be responsible for how they relate to their surroundings, and they attempt to exercise ownership over it. They believe that their expectations can be met through self-directed behaviors;this attitude exemplifies the concepts of “man being the master of his own destiny” and “sparing no effort.” This unique belief in fen leads to the formation of an operating mechanism in which people recognize and accept their destiny, which in turn motivates them to adopt attitudes and behaviors characterized by hard work and gratitude (Hsu, 2012). The effects of the PCM-based cold storage system operated under periodic (P12) and continuous (P24) storage conditions on the physico-chemical characteristics of mango fruits were investigated. Fruits in P12 and P24 storage conditions underwent weight loss, peel colour change, soluble solid concentration and maintained high firmness, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid along with the conventional cold storage system (G24). Temperature response and energy consumption revealed that PCM-based cold storage conditions P12 and P24 maintain the temperature within the permissible range and consume less energy than the conventional system. An effective reduction of 39 and 18% of energy consumption was noticed in P12 and P24 PCM-based cold storage conditions. As per these results periodic PCM-based cold storage (P12) can be effectively used as an energy-saving cold storage technology alternative to a conventional cold storage system to maintain the mango fruit quality during power failure and off-peak load conditions. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Precursor-Dependent Formation of Iron Pyrite and its Application as Supercapacitor Electrode Material

The on-going energy crisis and environmental pollution have motivated the scientific community to develop a sustainable energy technology. The energy storage is one of the main focus areas in this development process and supercapacitors are gaining significant research importance on that context. The electrode material of a supercapacitor plays a crucial role in its charge storage capability. Fe–S based materials are cheap owing to their high natural abundance and shows high specific capacitance value. One-pot hydrothermal reaction is the widely used procedure for synthesizing transition metal sulfides;however, there exists the possibility of impurity formation in this process. The Fe2+ and Fe3+ salts are the common precursors of Fe and two extensively utilized S-sources are Na2S and thiourea. Four different iron pyrite samples were synthesized by varying the reaction precursor and this variation regulated the phase purity and morphology of the final product. The combination of Fe2+ and thiourea was more suitable for synthesizing pure FeS2 and little to higher amount of Fex−1Sx impurity was formed in other three cases. The charge transfer and ion diffusivity of FeS2 decreased with the incorporation of Fex−1Sx, which diminished its specific capacitance. The superiorly active pyrite-based electrode material achieved ~ 1142 F g−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1. This investigation revealed the necessity of choosing accurate precursors for synthesizing electrode material through a one-pot hydrothermal reaction. © 2021, The Institution of Engineers (India).

Mindsets of suicide trajectories: An Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count analysis of suicide hotline conversations

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the psychological characteristics of the individuals with various suicide risks using computerized text analysis, in the hopes of a better understanding of suicide trajectories. Methods: 627 first-time callers' records were randomly selected from Taiwan An-Shin Hotline database between 2013 and 2018. The voice records were evaluated by two psychologists to determine the levels of suicide risk (156 with uncertainty of risk, 177 with low suicidal ideation, 157 with high suicidal ideation, and 137 with suicide preparation/attempt) and transcribed into text. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2015 (LIWC2015) program combined with Chinese dictionary were then used to calculate the frequency of word categories. Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified four mindsets of language characteristics, named “opposition and questioning”, “active engagement”, “negative rumination”, and “focus on death”. Psychological descriptions of the mindsets were also obtained through correlation analysis with the LIWC2015 categories and indicators. The four mindsets effectively distinguished the callers with different levels of suicide risk. Conclusion: The psychological characteristics of people with various suicide risks can be described and differentiated via the closed-word categories and composite indicators. These results provide useful information for practitioners and researchers. © 2024 American Association of Suicidology.

The role of prescriptive social norms on employees' cyberloafing: the moderating effect of power distance and co-workers' interdependency

Purpose: When pluralistic ignorance about cyberloafing is increased, individuals engage more in cyberloafing. Cyberloafing has become a great challenge in business organisations, and it is believed that many organisations do not complete their daily activities as a result of employee cyberloafing. Using the social norms theory as the main theoretical framework, the current study aims to assess the effects of prescriptive social norms on employee cyberloafing with the moderating effects of power distance and co-worker interdependency. Design/methodology/approach: The data sample included 237 employees from six large organisations in the service sector. This study used a survey to collect data at different times and analysed the data using hierarchal regression and Hayes Process Macro. Findings: Findings revealed that there exists a positive and significant impact of supervisors' approval of cyberloafing on employees' cyberloafing. Co-workers' approval of cyberloafing does not have any impact on employee cyberloafing. Power distance was found to moderate the relationship between supervisors' approval of cyberloafing and employees' cyberloafing. However, co-workers' interdependency did not moderate the relationship between co-workers' approval of cyberloafing and employees' cyberloafing. Originality/value: This research examines employees' cyberloafing behaviours and highlights the adverse consequences of prescriptive social norms in a work environment characterised by co-workers' interdependence and power distance. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The plants and trees are either utilized partially or wholly as a source of food and for its medicinal value. A wide variety of plants, trees and its parts are used from an ancient time due to its pharmaceutical and health-beneficial properties. In this perspective, the palmyra tree has its own cultural, nutritional and medicinal value of its own. The different parts of palmyra tree like roots, stem, flower, fruit, sprout, spadix, seed embryo are potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-diuretic activity due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. This review article mainly focused on the nutritional and pharmacological properties, as well as the health benefits of the palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer). Different parts of the palmyra tree exhibit unique medicinal value. This review outlines the pharmacological and health benefits of palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer) especially in treating stomach and lung disorders, skin inflammations and other associated ailments. This review also highlights the possible inhibitory action of different parts of palmyra against harmful microbes and other disease-causing agents. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

This study focused on the social context dimension to elucidate how students of different disciplinary backgrounds—department of Childcare and department of Design—share their learning and knowledge in a cooperative course and to evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated course operation. Design-based learning through a project activity includes the following four dimensions: the project’s features, teachers’ roles, assessment process, and social context relevant to the learning environment. In this study, a design-based collaborative course was implemented for undergraduate students from different departments. In this course, they cooperated in making an instructional animated film for kindergarten students. In the general learning process, students can experience frustration and loss of self-confidence when learning new skills;this was also noted in the present study when childcare students without a design background were instructed to make a film, and design students without experience in teaching methodologies were instructed to teach children. The result of the 18-week course indicated that students had trouble communicating with those from the other department but were ultimately satisfied with the substantial growth in their practical skills following this experimental cross-disciplinary cooperative curriculum. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

Milk is a universal food that is widely consumed around the world irrespective of age. It has a complex matrix consisting of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes that have successfully retained the interest of researchers as yet. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of low-temperature long-time (LTLT), ultraviolet light (UV), and ultrasound (US) treatments on physicochemical properties, microbial count, and fatty acid profiling of three types of bovine milk – Country (C), Jersey (J), and Holstein Friesian (HF). The study was conducted in southern India, where these three types of milk are commonly consumed. It was found that no significant (p ˂ 0.05) differences in the proximate composition of milk samples subjected to different treatments compared to untreated milk. However, LTLT treatment resulted in a reduction in ascorbic acid content and significant changes in antioxidant activity and lactose content. LTLT treatment was also able to kill the pathogenic bacteria E. coli, whereas UV and US treatment only showed a notable reduction in the E. coli count. Fatty acid profiling of the treated milk samples was done using GC/MS, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed to study the types of chemical bonds present. The results showed that non-thermal treatments (UV and US) were able to sustain the chemical characteristics of milk and had potential for implementation in the dairy industry. Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of non-thermal treatments such as UV and US in maintaining the chemical properties of milk and reducing pathogenic bacteria count. The findings could be useful in the dairy industry to ensure the safety and quality of milk. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Developing student imagination and career interest through a STEM project using 3D printing with repetitive modeling

Over the past few years, digital fabrication has been utilized in technology laboratories to emphasize hands-on learning processes in technology and engineering education. Recent studies indicate that hands-on activities can help students connect with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and develop key skills required in the 21st century. However, some argue that introducing 3D printing technology in schools could reduce pragmatic engagement and cause affective loss of hands-on interests. To explore the use of 3D printing machines in technology and engineering education, this research developed a STEM-based vibration isolator activity using a 3D printer and repetitive modeling. A nonequivalent control group design was employed in this research, and 192 Taiwanese high school students participated in this study. The conclusions are: (1) repetitive modeling in the STEM-based design activity enhanced student imagination;(2) repetitive modeling was effective in developing high school students’ interest in technology and engineering careers;and (3) repetitive modeling, engineering design, and “conceiving imagination” were significant predictors of the students’ final products. These results suggest a benefit to high school technology education of using 3D printers in a STEM-based vibration isolator design activity with repetitive modeling. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
