We study the file transfer problem in opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) model, which has been widely studied in throughput-oriented applications for max-throughput strategies and in delay-related works that commonly assume identical channel rates and fixed file sizes. Our work explicitly considers minimizing the file transfer time for a given file in a set of heterogeneous-rate Bernoulli channels, showing that max-throughput policy doesn’t minimize file transfer time in general. We formulate a mathematical framework for static extend to dynamic policies by mapping our file transfer problem to a stochastic shortest path problem. We analyze the performance of our proposed static and dynamic optimal policies over the max-throughput policy. We propose a mixed-integer programming formulation as an efficient alternative way to obtain the dynamic optimal policy and show a huge reduction in computation time. Then, we propose a heuristic policy that takes into account the performance-complexity tradeoff and consider the online implementation with unknown channel parameters. Furthermore, we present numerical simulations to support our analytical results and discuss the effect of switching delay on different policies. Finally, we extend the file transfer problem to Markovian channels and demonstrate the impact of the correlation of each channel. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Forest fires have a significant impact on ecosystems and human life, especially in northern Thailand, where Chiang Mai is severely affected. Traditional methods for detecting forest fires have limitations, so there is a need for advanced simulation models. This research uses Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) to develop a forest fire simulation for Chiang Mai. The methodology involves collecting historical data, performing Multiple Regression Analysis, designing the simulation, and testing it. Data from 1998 to 2021, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed/direction, burn area, and slope, were collected from various sources. Multiple regression analysis identified wind speed as the most significant factor affecting burn area. The forest fire simulation, designed using ZF Wang's spread model and tested with AnyLogic, showed that wind direction and speed are crucial in fire spread. The simulation accurately predicted high-risk areas, helping in proactive planning and response. This study confirms that wind is a critical factor in forest fire spread, providing a valuable tool for fire districts to improve preparedness and management. Future research should focus on refining the model with localized data and integrating real-time detection to improve its accuracy and applicability.

A Two-Stage Approach to Aircraft Recovery Under Uncertainty

The paper presents a two-stage approach for minimizing the impact of daily disruptions on an airline’s published flight schedule. The problem is characterized by uncertainty in the duration of the disruption and the point in time when its length becomes known. Both a single-commodity network model and multi-commodity network model with side constraints are developed to first determine the flights that are most likely to be affected, and then to adjust their schedules to achieve system-wide optimality. The overall objective is to minimize the weighted sum of total passenger delay costs, cancellation costs, curfew violation costs, and variation from the original schedule. The two types of uncertainty are addressed by examining a range of scenarios that reflect the most likely outcomes. The results provide guidance and a measure of robustness for the flight director as the disruption unfolds. A rolling horizon approach that closely mimics current procedures used by several airlines is also presented to provide a benchmark for comparisons with the two-stage solutions. © 2022, The Authors. The Neural Networks (NN) model which is incorporated in the control system design has been studied, and the results show better performance than the mathematical model approach. However, some studies consider that only offline NN model learning and does not use the online NN model learning directly on the control system. As a result, the controller's performance decreases due to changes in the system environment from time to time. The Reinforcement Learning (RL) method has been investigated intensively, especially Model-based RL (Mb-RL) to predict system dynamics. It has been investigated and performs well in making the system more robust to environmental changes by enabling online learning. This paper proposes online learning of local dynamics using the Mb-RL method by utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. We consider Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme as an agent of the Mb-RL method to control the regulatory trajectory objectives with a random shooting policy to search for the minimum objective function. A nonlinear Mass Spring Damper (NMSD) system with parameter-varying linear inertia is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the system can effectively control high-oscillating nonlinear systems with good performance.

The 2011 flood in Thailand exposed significant vulnerabilities in industrial areas, highlighting the necessity for enhanced disaster risk management through Area-Business Continuity Management (Area-BCM). This preliminary study focuses on identifying how stakeholders rely on information from each other to improve disaster preparedness and response. The research involves systematically identifying Area-BCM stakeholders and designing interview questions, which are evaluated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) to ensure relevance and clarity. All interview questions surpassed the IOC threshold of 0.5, confirming their effectiveness in capturing information interdependencies. Expert feedback led to refinements in the questions, underscoring the importance of tailored data collection. This initial plan provides a critical foundation for understanding information interdependence and highlights the importance of well-designed data collection methods. The findings have significant implications for developing more resilient disaster management strategies in industrial areas, emphasizing the need for precise and relevant stakeholder communication to enhance Area-BCM effectiveness.

This study proposes a direct teaching method for the task of pressing an end effector attached to a robot manipulator against a workpiece with a constant force. When performing contact tasks, such as deburring or polishing using a manipulator, a passive compliance is required for the end effector to suppress excessive contact force and impact. Therefore, we developed an end effector that combines a “parallel wire-type teaching device,” which enables direct teaching, and a compliance device. In the case of pressing a workpiece with a constant force, after teaching the robot's trajectory to trace the edge of the workpiece, the amount of pressing can be calculated from the stiffness of the end effector and the desired pressing force; the robot's trajectory can be edited to teach contact tasks. An experiment was conducted to press a straight trajectory with a constant force as the target value and evaluate the accuracy of force teaching.

We consider a budget constrained rail network electrification problem with associated changes in costs of energy usage (via path gradient and curvature), operations, and long-term maintenance. In particular, we consider that freight flows on such a network form a user equilibrium. Interactions between electric and diesel trains on the same corridor are represented with nonseparable link performance functions, which nevertheless have a symmetric Jacobian. This bi-level formulation is solved for the North American railroad network using a genetic algorithm (GA), incorporating domain-specific insights to reduce the number of solutions which must be considered. We analyze solution characteristics and decision-making implications. Results show that broad connectivity would be beneficial for most impact. Increasing demand shifts electrified corridors towards the more populous east and gulf coasts, while increased operational costs results in electrification of routes through mountainous terrains. © 2021, CC BY.

Increasing penetration of wind and renewable generation poses significant challenges to the power system operations and reliability. This paper considers the real-time optimal transmission switching (OTS) problem for determining the generation dispatch and network topology that can account for uncertain energy resources. To efficiently solve the resultant two-stage stochastic program, we propose a tractable linear decision rule (LDR) based approximation solution that can eliminate the uncertain variables and lead to fixed number of constraints. The proposed LDR approach can guarantee feasibility, and significantly reduces the computational complexity of existing approaches that grows with the number of randomly generated samples of uncertainty. Numerical studies on IEEE test cases demonstrate the high approximation accuracy of the proposed LDR solution and its computational efficiency for real-time OTS implementations. © 2020 IEEE.

The aim of our study is to evaluate the quality of water using machine learning methods. Potability is a subjective word that quantifies water quality. In this research, a variety of metrics were used to measure general potability of the water. The prescribed elements are applied like variable matrix to denote water quality. The article used three different classification methods, with success rates ranging from 84.27 to 93.16%, to predict the water quality class including ensemble approach like Random Forest (RFC), SVM for classification (SVC), as well as XGBoost. The Gradient Boosting approach, out of all the ones used, received the greatest accuracy (93.16%), precision (96.3%), recall (92.76%) and F-score (94.54%). Also, it achieved the least computational delay with a mean latency of 1.34 s. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Complaint resolution that arise due to internal and external factors in a company can be monitored through the Service Recovery Index (SRI), and SRI is developed through a number of factors that influence it. Meanwhile, the SRI model needs to be developed to see the business sustainability through implementation knowledge management system in the organization. The data collection method was carried out, starting with building a research instrument based on knowledge management theory and continued with observation and distributing questionnaires to respondents who were involved in the business process of managing SRI. The data analysis method was used to process the data from the questionnaire, factor analysis method was used and the method to build the model used was the regression analysis method. The results obtained from this study are the discovery of 4 (four) factors with a number of indicators that are grouped on each formed factor, which can then be made and built a readiness model that reflects current conditions, so that it can be used to build predictions in the future related to readiness. implementation of knowledge management system development in order to support increased understanding of the service recovery index in the organization. © 2021 ACM.
