The computational process of image segmentation performs the partitioning of it in disjoint regions by the specification and application of specific criteria. This process can be automatic or interactive. The interactive process allows the user interference in this process by means of the insertion of new criteria at any instant of the process execution. This new criterion can lead to the reaching of more appropriate results for the solution to the problem. However, interactive process application requires the user to have a high ability, context knowledge and accuracy executing the tasks. The interactive process can include facilities by allowing that some user actions may be executed with relative accuracy. Using computational resources, such task is made easier, since a computer can perform with more accuracy and speed, from the guides interactively defined by the user. The literature presents many methods that perform this task, among them the live wire, intelligent scissors and the interactive watershed with markers. The first two use a minimum cost system, in other words, optimization, to their working. This paper proposes an interactive method applied to image segmentation that combines the artificial ant colonies behavior and the image gradient technique. The gradient, supplied by heuristic rules, is the surface the ants search the path to the desired solution. The segmentation starts with the imposition of an initial point at the border of the object of interest and, by the user adding new points along its border, new segments belonged to object border are conquered. The proposed method shows a high repeatability of the segmentation task.

With the recent approval of IEEE 802.11n standard and progress on IEEE 802.11s mesh standardization efforts, performance evaluation of such standards has gained acceleration. In particular, several wireless testbeds have been created to form wireless mesh networks (WMNs) in order to test various aspects of these new standards. However, none of these considered multi-hop performance of WMNs when 802.11n based nodes are employed. While IEEE 802.11s is geared for implementing multi-hopping capability among the nodes, current studies still assume IEEE 802.11a/g based nodes. This paper presents a performance evaluation of WMNs using both 802.11s (in conjunction with 802.11a/g) and 802.11n on a real academic testbed. While a draft version of 802.11s has been used for creating a linear WMN using 802.11a/g based routers, the same linear WMN using 802.11n has been created using virtualized interfaces at the IP layer. Using such WMNs, throughput performance of TCP and UDP at both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrums with different number of hops has been examined. The experiment results have shown that multi-hopping significantly degrades the expected performance of IEEE 802.11n.

Fuzzy systems concern fundamental methodology to represent and process uncertainty and imprecision in the linguistic inf.rmation. The fuzzy systems that use fuzzy rules to represent the domain knowledge of the problem are known as Fuzzy Rule Base Systems (FRBS). On the other hand image segmentation and subsequent extraction from a noise-affected background, with the help of various soft computing methods, are relatively new and quite popular due to various reasons. These methods include various Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models (primarily supervised in nature), Genetic Algorithm (GA) based techniques, intensity histogram based methods etc. providing an extraction solution working in unsupervised mode happens to be even more interesting problem. Literature suggests that effort in this respect appears to be quite rudimentary. In the present article, we propose a fuzzy rule guided novel technique that is functional devoid of any external intervention during execution. Experimental results suggest that this approach is an efficient one in comparison to different other techniques extensively addressed in literature. In order to justify the supremacy of performance of our proposed technique in respect of its competitors, we take recourse to effective metrics like Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR).

In this paper, a novel explicit image filter, called Guided Gabor filter, is proposed to extract the finger vein pattern without any segmentation processing, and lower performance reduction for poor quality images which result from low contrast, illumination, or noise effects, etc. The proposed filter is contributed for finger vein enhancement, noise reduction, and haze removal without being affected by the brightness of the vein. It performs well not only on ridge detection like the Gabor filter, but on image enhancement as an edge-preserving smoothing operator without the gradient reversal artifacts. The experimental results show that the proposed method is able to get vein pattern more clearly and faster than the existing methods, and improve the matching performance with higher recognition rate.

Documents and web pages share many similarities. Thus classification methods used in documents can be applied to advanced web content, with or even without modifications. Algorithms for document and web classification are presented as an introduction. One out of many tools that can be used in method evaluation, application and modification is WEKA (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis). Testing results and conclusions strengthen the principles and bases of classification, while demonstrating the need for a new interlayer in the evaluation of classification methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Tactical communication networking faces complexity, heterogeneity, and reliability requirements. The emerging research area of cognitive networks offers a potential for dealing with these problems. A key feature of cognitive networks is the knowledge base, which is produced during the process of learning and responsible for the decision making. We propose a cognitive network model integrated with the knowledge base, which is a primary part of cognitive networks. And then we focus on the construction of the knowledge base and the expression form of the knowledge in the model. In this paper, we use the Bayesian Network (BN) to construct the knowledge base, which is a unique tool for creating a representation of the dependence relationships among network protocol parameters. The data structure of the dependence relationships of the BN is translated into the knowledge which is expressed by the probability. In the simulation experiments, we create the BN through the sampling data to construct the knowledge base using the mathematical tool MATLAB and prove the efficiency of our cognitive network model for optimizing network performance in the OPENT simulation platform.

RFID is considered as a significant technology which supplies amounts of change in chain management. The most important problem with the RFID system is that the attacker can access the tag's inf.rmation, which leads to the security and privacy problems. Aimed at these problems, a secure hash-based mutual authentication protocol is proposed by utilizing the hash function, the PRNG (pseudo-random number generator) and the secret key. In the proposal, the tag conceals the ID with a random number, the hash function and the secret key. A hash value is transmitted as a substitute for the ID, which realizes the anonymous transmission of the inf.rmation. The reader and the tag authenticate each other, which eliminates intended or meaningless interferences from the attacker. The computational complexity of the proposed protocol is the same with several hash-based protocols, provided adequate security level and efficiency for practical applications.

Self-stabilisation is a theoretical framework for fault-tolerance without external assistance. Adoption of self-stabilisation in distributed systems has received considerable research interest over the last decade. In this paper, we propose a self-stabilising algorithm for 3-edge-connectivity of an asynchronous distributed model of computation. A self-stabilising depth-first search algorithm is run concurrently to build a depth-first search spanning tree of the system. Once such a tree is constructed, all the 3-edge-connected components of the system can be detected in O(h) rounds, where h is the height of the depth-first search tree. The result of computation is kept in a distributed fashion in the sense that, upon stabilisation of the algorithm, each processor knows all other processors that are 3-edge-connected to it. The space complexity of our algorithm is O(n2 log Δ) bits per processor, where Δ is an upper bound on the degree of a processor. Copyright © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper introduces an adaptive scanning order for bitplane image coding engines, which is devised from a rate-distortion optimization perspective that uses recent advances in coefficient modeling and distortion estimation. The main idea is to always select the next coefficient to be coded so that image distortion and code stream length are minimized. The sequence of visited coefficients is adapted as more coefficients are coded without need to explicitly transmit order inf.rmation. Experimental results suggest that the proposed scanning order produces a code stream in which nearly all bits lie on the convex hull of the operation rate-distortion function.
