Considering that large and various contents are shared over thousands of peers across a P2P network, one challenging problem is to locate the target content in such a large and unorganized environment. Hence, a P2P system designed with the content classification and managed distribution is more efficient and reliable than the mass and unclassified ones. We propose a MLTG (multilayer topic-group) based P2P network. Two core concepts are integrated into the system structure: topic-group and hierarchic layer. Peers act as local peers, delegate peers and super-peers. These peers spread on different hierarchic layers and the system distributes the correlative resources among the same groups. Compared with the traditional P2P schemes, the MLTG is out-performed significantly. From the experiments, it saves up to 90% of query cost for the case of a single keyword query. When the query consists of topic and keywords, it saves up to 93% of cost. MLTG guarantees the enhancement of successful search and lower consumption of bandwidth. It also makes the system more available, reliable and efficient.

In this paper the theoretical operation of incremental (charge-balancing) delta-sigma (DeltaSigma) converters is reviewed, and the implementation of a 22-bit incremental A/D converter is described. Two different analyses of the first-order incremental converter are presented, and based on these results two extensions to higher-order modulators are proposed. Since line-frequency noise suppression is often important in measurement applications, modulators followed by sinc k filters are also analyzed. Equations are derived for the estimation of the required number of cycles for a given resolution and architecture. Finally, the design and implementation of a third-order incremental converter with a fourth-order sine filter is briefly discussed

Migrating a thread while preserving its state is a useful mechanism to have in situations where load balancing within applications with intensive data processing is required. Strong mobility systems, however, are rarely developed or implemented as they introduce a number of major challenges into the implementation of the system. This is due to the fact that the underlying inf.astructure that most computers operate on was never designed to accommodate such a system, and because of this it actually impedes the development of these systems to some degree. Using a system based around a virtual machine, such as Microsoft's Common Language Runtime (CLR), circumnavigates many of these problems by abstracting away system differences. In this paper we outline the architecture of the threading mechanism in the shared source version of the CLR known as the Shared Source Common Language inf.astructure (SSCLI). We also outline how we are porting strong mobility into the SSCLI, taking advantage of its virtual machine.

A new image-based real-time flame detection method is proposed in this paper. First, fire flame features based on the HSI color model are extracted by analyzing 70 flame images. Then, based on these flame features, regions with fire-like colors are roughly separated from an image. Besides segmenting fire flame regions, background objects with similar fire colors or caused by color shift resulted from the reflection of fire flames are also separated from the image. In order to get rid of these spurious fire-like regions, the image difference method and the invented color masking technique are applied. Finally, a simple method is devised to estimate the burning degree of fire flames so that users could be inf.rmed with a proper warning alarm. The proposed method is tested with seven diverse fire flame video clips on a Pentium II 350 processor with 128 MB RAM at the process speed of thirty frames per second. The experimental results are quite encouraging. The proposed method can achieve more than 96.97% detection rate on average. In addition, the system can correctly recognize fire flames within one second on the initial combustion from the test video clips, which seems very promising.

The advancement of wireless networks and distributed computing necessitates more advanced applications to be built with adaptability to their changing system services. Today, building adaptive services is a complex task due to the lack of an adequate framework support in the distributed computing environments. In this paper, we propose a metalevel component-based framework (MELC) which uses distributed computing design patterns as components to develop an adaptive pattern-oriented framework for distributed computing applications. We describe our novel approach of combining a meta-architecture with a pattern-oriented framework, resulting in an adaptable framework which provides a mechanism to facilitate system evolution. We show how MELC can be used effectively to enable component integration and to separate system functionality from application functionality and demonstrate how MELC provides an adaptable and dynamic run time environment.

Peer-to-peer grids that seek to harvest idle cycles available throughout the Internet are vulnerable to hosts that fraudulently accept computational tasks and then maliciously return arbitrary results. Current strategies employed by popular cooperative computing grids, such as SETI@Home, rely heavily on task replication to check results. However, result verification through replication suffers from two potential shortcomings: (1) susceptibility to collusion in which a group of malicious hosts conspire to return the same bad results and (2) high fixed overhead incurred by running redundant copies of the task. In this paper, we first propose a scheme called Quiz to combat collusion. The basic idea of Quiz is to insert indistinguishable quiz tasks with verifiable results known to the client within a package containing several normal tasks. The client can then accept or reject the normal task results based on the correctness of quiz results. Our second contribution is the promotion of trust-based task scheduling in peer-to-peer grids. By coupling a reputation system with the basic verification schemes - Replication and Quiz - a client can potentially avoid malicious hosts and also reduce the overhead of verification for trusted hosts.

The main concern of sensor networks is to maintain full coverage of the monitoring areas, not to keep each node alive as long as possible. That is, it is not necessary to keep nodes alive if they are replaceable by their surrounding nodes and the full coverage is still maintained. Thus, we argue that the objective of designing an energy-aware route selection protocol is to prolong the monitoring lifetime of sensor networks, or the duration that sensor networks may maintain full coverage of the monitoring areas, not the power lifetime of individual nodes. In this paper, we propose a density-based route selection protocol, DBR, and introduce a new metric, potential energy, to be used to select the routes that pass through the highly replaceable nodes. We also conduct a simulation to compare DBR with two existing route selection protocols, MTPR and MMBCR, and the result is satisfactory. DBR outperforms MTPR significantly in almost every case, and is better than MMBCR in most cases while slightly worse in some cases.

This paper targets two essential issues in intrusion detection system designs: the optimization of rule selection and the attack discovery in attack analysis. A scenario-based approach is proposed to correlate malicious packets and to intelligently select intrusion detection rules to fire. We propose algorithms for rule selection and attack scenario identification. Potential threats and their relationship for a gateway and Web-server applications are explored as an example in the study. The proposed algorithms are implemented over Snort, a signature-based intrusion detection system, for which we have some encouraging performance evaluation results.

Two main issues need to be covered when dealing with the dependability of component-based systems: quality assurance of reusable software components and quality assurance of the assembled component-based system. By focussing on the assembly, a software architecture specification of a component-based system allows to explicitly model the structure and required system behavior by specifying how components and connectors are intended to interact. Software architecture-based conformance testing techniques can yield confidence on the implementation conformance to expected structural and behavioral properties as specified in the architectural models. In this paper we explore software architecture-based regression testing methods that enable reuse of earlier saved results to test if a different assembly of components conforms to the evolved software architecture. The approach is presented through a running example.

This paper studies two optimization problems in the SNP and haplotype research. The first problem asks for a minimum set of SNPs that can tolerate a certain number of missing data. The second problem asks for a minimum set of haplotypes that can explain a given set of genotypes. We show that both problems are NP-hard and design several approximation algorithms to solve them efficiently. These algorithms have been implemented and tested on both simulated and biological data. Our theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that these algorithms are able to find solutions close to the optimal solutions.
