In this paper, ICA is presented as an efficient feature extraction algorithm used in automatic face recognition task. In a task such as face recognition, important inf.rmation may be contained in the high-order relationship among pixels. ICA is sensitive to high-order statistic in the data and finds not-necessarily orthogonal bases, so it may better identify and reconstruct high-dimensional face image data. ICA algorithms are time-consuming and sometimes converge difficultly. So a modified FastICA algorithm is developed in this paper, which only need to computer Jacobian matrix once time in one iteration and achieves the correspondent effect of Fast-ICA. After obtaining all independent components, a genetic algorithm is introduced to select optimal independent components (ICs). In this paper, ICA is compared with principle component analysis (PCA) based feature extraction method. The experiment results show that modified FastICA algorithm fast convergence speed and genetic algorithm optimize recognition performance. ICA based features extraction method is robust to variations and promising for face recognition.

Environmental sound recognition is an important function of robotic audition. Although HMM- or TDNN-based methods can also be used for environmental sound recognition, unlike speech recognition, it is not possible to create a perfect database covering all kinds of environmental sounds. Environmental sound recognition depends more on the robot computer system task. From this point of view, the methods for environmental sound recognition must also be task-dependent and be evaluated based on accuracy, speed and simplicity. In this research, we tried to use a multilayered perceptron NN system for environmental sound recognition. The input data is the one-dimensional combination of the instantaneous spectrum at the power peak and the power pattern in time domain. The spectrum of environmental sounds do not change as remarkedly as that of speech of voice, so the combination of power and frequency pattern will retain the major features of environmental sounds but with drastically reduced data. Two experiments were conducted using an original database and a database created by the RWCP. The recognition rate for 45 environmental sound data sets was about 92%. The new method is fast and simple compared to the HMM-based methods, and suitable for an on-board system of a robot for home use, e.g. a security monitoring robot or a home-helper robot.

The paper uses the concept of time expansion model (Innoue et al., 2000) to find the test generation for acyclic sequential circuits. It identifies a class of sequential circuits called as max-testable sequential circuits, where test generation can be obtained using a combinational test generator with the capability of detecting multiple faults on a kernel of combinational circuit. Any acyclic sequential circuit without hold registers belongs to this class. For the sequential circuits having hold registers, a subset of such circuits is found to be belonged to max-testable class. The paper also suggests an algorithm to find such class of circuits.

The "random walk on the boundary" Monte Carlo method has been successfully used for solving boundary-value problems. This method has significant advantages when compared to random walks on spheres, balls or a grid, when solving exterior problems, or when solving a problem at an arbitrary number of points using a single random walk. In this paper we study the properties of the method when we use quasirandom sequences instead of pseudorandom numbers to construct the walks on the boundary. Theoretical estimates of the convergence rate are given and numerical experiments are presented in an attempt to confirm the convergence results. The numerical results show that for "walk on the boundary" quasirandom sequences provide a slight improvement over ordinary Monte Carlo. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, a search algorithm is proposed for parameter tuning of production rules in job shop scheduling problems. This algorithm is developed based on the genetic algorithm, which is the core for exploration in the search space. Then an ant system is incorporated, which directs the genetic algorithm to search in the potential regions by marking potential genes for changing during reproduction. The improvement of search ability is verified by several experiments.

The focus of this paper is to propose a service-oriented multi-agent framework to better integrate Web services and agents. In the making of this framework, there are four main components: (1) a possibilistic Petri-Nets (PPN) based service matchmaking mechanism for service discovery, (2) a service description language based on PPN for describing agent services and Web services, (3) a set of ontologies to facilitate the semantic matchmaking, and (4) an extension of tModels to bridge the Web services registered in UDDI to the PPN matchmaker.

In order to fairly access a shared wireless channel and allocate network resources, resource management mechanisms are required for controlling link-sharing in wireless local area networks (WLANs), which are expected to support real-time and multimedia applications. We then propose, in this paper, an extended class-based queueing (CBQ) service, based on a controlled hierarchical link-sharing model with a QoS-aware IEEE 802.11e MAC protocol to support sharing of the link bandwidth among different users in a distributed manner. Dynamically adjusting parameters in IEEE 802.11e, e.g., AIFS, CW/sub min/, and CW/sub max/, which are used to control the probability of accessing the channel, our scheme is able to achieve fair channel sharing. Using a simulation approach, we demonstrate the fairness improvement of our scheme is good.

Time pressure and quality issues are two main challenges facing today's Web development professionals. To achieve quick development of high-quality systems, a lot of methods and techniques have been proposed. A widely recognized strategy in current practice is to emphasize early quality assurance techniques, as the late detection of defects are well known to be expensive and time-consuming. We take robustness as a critically important quality attribute, and propose a general framework for conducting early robustness analysis for Web-based systems, based on Jacobson's analysis method and FMEA (failure mode and effect analysis).

We address two important components of mobility management: location management and handoff management. Location management including update and paging enables the network to discover the current attachment point of the mobile user for call delivery. Furthermore, we divide the process of location management into two phases. The first phase deals with location update or registration so that the MN periodically notifies the network of its new access point, allowing the network to authenticate the user and revise the user's current location. The second phase performs packet delivery. Here the network is queried for the user's location and the packets are forwarded to the current position of the MN. Handoff management enables the network to maintain a user's connection as the mobile terminal continues to move and change its access points or base stations to the network. Moreover, we bring a number of factors in designing an efficient mobility management protocol, inf.uencing handoff performance. They include handoff control, packet loss and duplication, radio behavior, signaling overhead, path efficiency, passive connectivity and paging.
