A constrained Kalman filtering algorithm based on auditory masking threshold is proposed for enhancing speech degraded by colored noise. The auditory masking threshold is used as a constraint to obtain a Kalman gain, which minimizes the estimate error variance under the constraint that the error power is smaller than the masking threshold. From the characteristics of the correlation vector, the power spectrum density and the masking threshold, a nonlinear constrained optimization problem is formed to calculate the Kalman gain. Simulation results show that the algorithm can improve subjective PESQ scores over both classic algorithms and recently published algorithms.

Facial animation has been widely used in different areas such as entertainment and teleconferencing. Using video data to control facial animation is an interesting and difficult problem. In this paper, a novel double B-spline (NURBS) muscle system is proposed to simulate a 3D facial expression and talking animation based on video images. This system can simulate many different expressions of the elastic human face. Each muscle is constructed by two non-uniform rational B-spline curves, which better approximate the real muscle system. There are 14 feature points to represent facial expressions and we apply a lip contour extraction technique to determine lip shapes.

Vibrotactile displays have been studied for several decades in the context of sensory substitution. Recently, a number of vibrotactile displays have been developed to extend sensory modalities in virtual reality. Some of these target the whole body as the stimulation region, but existing systems are only designed for discrete stimulation points at specific parts of the body. However, since human tactile sensation has more resolution, a higher density might be required in factor alignment in order to realize general-purpose vibrotactile displays. One problem with this approach is that it might result in an impractically high number of required tactors. Our current focus is to explore ways of simplifying the system while maintaining an acceptable level of expressive ability. As a first step, we chose a well-studied task: tactile letter reading. We examined the possibility of distinguishing alphanumeric letters by using only a 3-by-3 array of vibrating motors on the back of a chair. The tactors are driven sequentially in the same sequence as if someone were tracing the letter on the chair's back. The results showed 87% successful letter recognition in some cases, which was close to the results in previous research with much larger arrays.

utilize web and database technology to construct a Journal-Based Portfolios Assessment system to realize a Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP)[1] learning community. In this system, we divide system to three layer, the view layer present data by Oracle Portal Server, Data layer store data by Oracle Database Server and Operating Control layer operate workflow by Oracle Database trigger and job Data analysis and questionnaire indicates that Web Journal is effective to promote knowledge exchange, Student can improve learning performance and it can form a LPP structure The purpose of using the journal approach[2] is to emulate the forming of academic societies formed by journals. At the same time, the achievement of students in a course is based on their publications in journals and the positions they played in the journals. First, students submit their work such as homeworks, learning portfolios, reports of organizing contents in the discussion, learning problems, related websites. Each submitted article would be assessed by three peers Then the reviewers will review the submitted works. The reviewers will give comments to students. The journal system will publish good articles. Articles published include submitted works and reviewer's comments hoping that students will contribute and exchange their knowledge.

Although there has been a lot of discussion of "transactions" in mobile e-commerce (m-commerce), very little attention has been paid for distributed transactional properties of the computations facilitating m-commerce. In this paper, we first present a requirement analysis and then present a wireless terminal-based transaction manager (TM) architecture. This architecture is based on the assumption that there is an application that supports certain business transaction(s) and that it uses the TM to store transactional state inf.rmation and retrieve it after a communication link, application, or terminal crash. We present the design of such a TM, including the application interface, modules and log structure. A pilot implementation of this TM for the location-based application is also discussed. We further discuss other alternatives to design such a TM that together can be called "ontological transaction monitor". This acts as an intelligent component between the application and the servers accessed during m-commerce transactions and controls the perceivable communication behavior of the terminal towards the servers, maintains the state inf.rmation and takes care of tight coupling of transactional properties of the computations as well as of security and privacy. © 2003 IEEE.

We have demonstrated that it is possible to use quasicrystals to make circuit with add-drop filter characteristics We employed the Ammann-Beenker tiling as a base to model a photonic quasicrystal lattice of dielectric rods with /spl epsiv/=10. This structure possesses a complete photonic band gap in TM polarization. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of employing photonic quasicrystal as a resonance add-drop filter with respect to the more conventional photonic crystal based filters. © 2003 IEEE.

The Byzantine Agreement (BA) problem has been widely discussed in the literature concerned Most BA protocols can reach a common agreement by way of fault masking. However, in a highly reliable fault-tolerant distributed system, just reaching a common agreement is not enough. We need to take into consideration another related problem called the Fault Diagnosis Agreement (FDA) problem. The goal of solving the FDA problem is to make each fault-free processor detect/locate the common set of faulty components in the distributed system. In this study, we shall solve the FDA problem with the dual failure mode over a multicasting network system. The proposed FDA protocol can detect/locate the maximum number of faulty components with the dual failure mode to solve the FDA problem in a synchronous multicasting network.

computer technology has made a substantial contribution in teaching and learning to higher education during the past two decades (1983-2003). Until recently, Internet technology promises to become even more pervasive in this arena, there is a paradigm shift from classroom based teaching to computer based teaching, such as computer aided learning using Web based learning approach and its corresponding variants. Today more and more learning takes place outside of the classroom, however, most of the time spent as a learner is probably still in a "traditional" classroom. This research work has built a Web learning site on a database design topic and using a quantitative approach by Web mining techniques to discover the effectiveness of Web-based learning from a user's perspective. We have analysed our Web data collected to present our knowledge discovered in this paper. The insight knowledge could be utilized to refine the Web based learning content and design style for better effectiveness. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, we report the results of experimental studies of reflectance and transmission spectra of opal-based metal-dielectric photonic crystals. The evolution of reflectance spectra with increase of the Au content towards emerging the novel resonances is strong evidence in favour of transformation the opal PBG structure from dielectric to metal dielectric type. © 2003 IEEE.

The mobile ad hoc network (MANET), which is characterized by an inf.astructureless architecture and multi-hop communication, has attracted a lot of attention recently. In the evolution of IP networks to version 6, adopting the same protocol would guarantee the success and portability of MANETs. In this paper, we propose a secure bootstrapping and routing protocol for MANETs. Mobile hosts can autoconfigure and even change their IP addresses based on the concept of CGA (cryptographically generated address), but they can not hide their identities easily. The protocol is modified from DSR (dynamic source routing) to support secure routing. The neighbor discovery and domain name registration in IPv6 are incorporated and enhanced with security functions. The protocol is characterized by the following features: (i) it is designed based on IPv6, (ii) relying on a DNS server, it allows bootstrapping a MANET with little pre-configuration overhead, so network formation is light-weight, and (iii) it is able to resist a variety of security attacks. © 2003 IEEE.
