In [S. Castano et al. (1992)], an object-oriented security model was proposed to protect documents in office environments. It defined role as a set of actions and responsibilities played by users to identify the operations that they can execute on documents. This scheme can make representation and realization easy while using modem object-oriented programming languages to model an inf.rmation system. However, it simply considered the authorization of operation from an identified role to the document. The available time slot associated with this operation was not addressed. Moreover, actions and responsibilities to the access authorization of a peripheral device (such as the printer) were not specified. These characteristics are very important for a high-secure system in military or government that must protect inf.rmation of different classifications against unauthorized access. After adoption of the UML 1.1 specification by the OMG membership in November 1997, Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been widely accepted as an object oriented software analysis/design methodology in the software engineering community. It provides most of the concepts and notations that are essential for documenting object oriented models. To demonstrate our approach, we have formulated security models for high secure office systems using the UML model.

Research in computational neuroscience has been following a model-based approach where data is comprised of digitized streams of sampled analog data, images and voice. The data are generally contained in files and specialized programs are used to analyze the data. In this study we developed a prototype system for indexing and retrieving inf.rmation for use by an application that analyzes data. The data in the files consist of channels derived from analog and event driven sources. It is also linked to video images associated with the data acquisition. In this research, we developed an indexing capability that threads into the data acquisition and analysis programs to give the system a broad data base capability. We designed tables and relations within the database for indexing the files and inf.rmation contained within the file. The system has the potential of giving us retrieval capabilities that include analog, event, and video data types.

Combining virtual reality and network multimedia techniques in applications is becoming popular. 3D geometry models are used in such applications. It is difficult to build mathematical models manually, but reverse engineering for building such models. Such a model is suitable for Internet transmission. However, there is still a bottleneck in using reverse engineering to reconstruct a relationship between vertices. The α-Shapes is an old method used for this purpose, and we propose methods to improve its efficiency. Our method can generate a compact model, and the average storage space required by our method is about half that of the original method. The advantage of our method is not the storage space but also reconstruction time. © 2002 IEEE.

A virtual class delivers most of its content through multimedia learning objects. To support such multimedia learning objects, its multimedia data service system should have a capacity to serve the growing number of clients and new data. A streaming server transfers multimedia files to clients from a repository of files in real time. The server must guarantee concurrent and uninterrupted delivery of each video stream requested by clients. To provide efficient services, many stream servers adopt multi-processors, sufficient memory, and RAID or SAN in their systems. In this paper, we propose a Linux-based parallel media streaming server. This system uses a unique striping policy to distribute multimedia files into the parallel storage nodes. If a service request occurs, each storage node transmits striped files concurrently to the client. Its performance is better than the existing single media streaming service. © 2002 IEEE.

An ad hoc wireless network provides inf.astructureless and mobility data networking, each move of the mobile host affects the change of network topology and the route of transmission. The ad hoc backup node setup routing protocol (ABRP) provides more complete consideration of the routing quality. In ABRP, the destination can receive more routes in a given period of time. Those routes from the source node to the destination node may give us ways to analyze and find some backup routes to get more help for reconnection when a link failure happens. The backup route inf.rmation can be saved in a specific on-the-route node. The backup routes can be rapidly discovered and one can trace back these nodes when there would be situations such as disconnections. Moreover, ABRP provides a backup node mechanism to reconnect maintenance quickly for fitting the property of the ad hoc wireless networks.

A new adaptive blind multiuser detector is proposed. The algorithm is founded on minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) but does not require training sequences, and converges to the minimum MSE (MMSE) detector. Like the blind minimum-output-energy (MOE) detector, the proposed detector requires only the signature waveform and timing of the user of interest. We show that the blind MMSE and MOE detectors have similar transient and steady-state performance, and the same level of robustness against imprecise estimation of the desired user's received signature waveform. However, the proposed adaptive detector has 2N+1 fewer multiplications and N fewer summations than the MOE detector, where N is the length of the tap-weight vector.

In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to tackle multi-class classification problems. For a K-class classification task, an array of K optimal pairwise coupling classifiers (O-PWC) is constructed, each of which is optimal to the corresponding class and provides a reliable probability estimation for that class. The classification accuracy rate is improved while the computational cost does not increase too much. At the same time, a more accurate estimation of posterior probabilities for a given pattern can be acquired. This algorithm is applied to face recognition on an ORL face database. Experimental results reveal that our method is effective and efficient.

In the future, many of the physical objects that surround us will be augmented with microprocessors and wireless transceivers. They will communicate with each other, quietly monitor our daily activities and notify us of important events. Any piece of relevant inf.rmation on the Internet will be available to us anytime and anywhere. We call this scenario the Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environment. In our current lifestyle, one of the most precious and scarce resources is human attention. Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments have the potential to make our daily life more comfortable and attractive because they will allow us to focus only on the essential tasks, letting technology take care of itself. However, building Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments requires us to address a variety of technical issues. In particular we have to take into account the software development costs to build such an attractive future. As a road to developing the necessary software in a timely fashion, we propose to base the system on existing inf.astructural software components such as Linux, Java and CORBA. We identify several important architectural problems that builders of Internet-scale ubiquitous computing environments will have to address, and we present some recommendations on the basis of our analysis and implementation experience.

Underground environments are of great interest to intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications, since they occur frequently in both urban and rural situations, and have peculiar propagation characteristics. This investigation includes two of the major fields in ITS applications: road-to-vehicle, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Besides that, the propagation measurements presented also focus on the transition effects when moving between the regions outside and inside a tunnel, which represents its entrance environment. The experimental results of path loss and delay spread profiles are presented and analyzed.
