Underground environments are of great interest to intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications, since they occur frequently in both urban and rural situations, and have peculiar propagation characteristics. This investigation includes two of the major fields in ITS applications: road-to-vehicle, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Besides that, the propagation measurements presented also focus on the transition effects when moving between the regions outside and inside a tunnel, which represents its entrance environment. The experimental results of path loss and delay spread profiles are presented and analyzed.

In the micro-/pico-cellular wireless networks, the frequency of handoffs, and the amount of the traffic for location updating and terminal paging will increase. For the geographical environment, the uncertainty of user behavior and current positions, traditional location updating schemes are no longer applicable to micro-/pico-cellular wireless networks. In the paper a location-updating scheme using fuzzy logic control is proposed to adaptively adjust the size of the location area for each user. Simulation results show that, for the proposed scheme, the total location management cost is reduced by 40.24% on average. Moreover, the proposed scheme can operate normally under the geographical environment with blockage, and reduce the terminal paging cost efficiently.

There are two basic parts to the behavioral specification of distributed systems: safety and progress. In earlier work, we developed a tool to monitor progress properties of CORBA components specified using the temporal operator transient. In this paper, we address the specification and testing of transient properties that are quantified (over both bounded and unbounded domains). We categorize typical quantifications that arise in practical systems and discuss possible implementation strategies. We define functional transients, a subclass of quantified transient properties that can be monitored in constant space and time. We outline the design and implementation of a tool for testing these properties in CORBA components.

The authors revisit the topic of Gabor feature extraction for Chinese OCR. We adopt a very simple discriminant function to construct a maximum discriminant function based character recognizer. We experiment with a simple way of forming a feature vector for each character image by extracting Gabor features using one wavelength at locations uniformly sampled with one spatial resolution. Extensive experiments on large vocabulary Chinese OCR for both machine-printed and handwritten characters are performed by using a large amount of training and testing data to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Gabor features for Chinese OCR. Using Gabor features as raw features, we have constructed several state-of-the-art Chinese OCR engines.

This paper proposes a new query generation method that is based on examples of human-to-human dialogue. Along with modeling the inf.rmation flow in dialogue, a system for inf.rmation retrieval in-car has been designed. The system refers to the dialogue corpus to find an example that is similar to input speech, and makes a query from the example. Current multidimensional indexing structures employed in content based image retrieval systems perform poorly when applied to feature data of high dimensionality. To alleviate this problem, one approach is to reduce the number of dimensions of the image data. The authors present a technique of dimensionality reduction using a neural network that combines heteroassociative and autoassociative functions. We show that besides allowing significant reduction in the number of dimensions, combining these two functions can lead to an improvement in retrieval performance.

Frame latency, as one of the main QoS parameters, quantifies also the level of quality of network devices. We proposed a new metric for ATM frame latency called MIMO (message-in message-out) latency that improves upon other latency metrics commonly used for continuous frame technologies. Analysis of examples and measurement results showed that MIMO is less workload dependent and a better indicator of switch performance. MIMO can be used to measure the frame latency of a single switch or of a network of switches. We showed that the formulation of MIMO aggregation is very useful in understanding the contribution of each network element and their interconnections to the total frame latency.
