This paper proposes an algorithm, called probability-based multicast tree (PBMT) algorithm, for multicast routing in wireless ATM networks. The PBMT is established from a fixed base station (BS) by several steps. First, the network is modeled as a graph with nodes denoting the BS and edges representing links between BS. An edge is added into any two nodes when their coverage areas overlap each other. Then, the degree of each node in the graph is computed. Based on the computed degree of each node, the probability of a mobile user moving to a new node can be determined. In order to identify the importance of each node, the cost of the edge is weighed based on the probabilities of corresponding nodes. Finally, a node with maximal degree is selected repeatedly until a minimal-spanning tree is formed. Nodes that do not belong to the multicast members are pruned. Simulation has been done to compare the performance analysis by our algorithm with these of other algorithms.

Designing effective congestion control strategies for broadband networks is known to be difficult because of the variety of dynamic parameters involved such as link speeds, burstiness of the traffic, and the distances between traffic sources and switching nodes. We propose a traffic management scheme, which is insensitive to the propagation delay between the sources and switching nodes. We achieve this by combining connection admission control with a bandwidth allocation strategy. By seeking the cooperation of the available bit rate (ABR) sources (to limit their peak cell rate, PCR) at the time of admission of a variable bit rate (VBR) source to the network, the scheme eliminates the continuous congestion control. Our simulations show that the strategy is able to eliminate the ABR cell losses, achieves effective server and buffer utilization, and provides bounded delays to the VBR traffic (unlike the case without any controls).

This paper addresses the problem of performance estimation for data-flow algorithms, and proposes a novel approach suitable in IP-based design methodology. It assumes that an algorithm is defined as a set of interacting blocks, where each block is associated with implementations for target processors, and the delay for each implementation has been already measured and is characterized by a delay equation. The estimation is performed using delay equations, rather than considering detailed implementations of the blocks. This assumption matches well with the trend of system design, in which the system behavior is specified by using already characterized components. The estimation procedure takes into account decisions made carefully at compile time, such as inter-block scheduling and static memory allocation. This estimation technique is very fast and accurate, in particular for algorithms with small run-time dependencies such as those in data-flow applications. The procedure has been implemented, and preliminary experimental results are presented for single DSP architectures to demonstrate its effectiveness.

The limiter and microwave soliton behavior were experimentally demonstrated in the microstrip line using the 20 /spl mu/m thick yttrium iron garnet film substrate at S band. These nonlinear phenomena were explained by the strong coupling between quasi-TEM and magnetostatic forward volume wave modes at magnetic resonance frequency of /spl gamma//spl mu//sub 0/H/sub 0//2/spl pi/ from an implicit dispersion relation of the stripline.

We consider a priority cell scheduling in the following scenario. High-speed cell networks accommodate constant bit rate (CBR) streams from real-time sources and unspecified bit rate (UBR) streams from non real-time sources. The real-time traffic requires guarantees of its delay time. On the other hand, the non real-time traffic is relatively tolerable to its delay time. We obtain the queueing delay distribution of cells from CBR streams. Further the average queueing delay of cells from UBR streams is obtained in some special cases. We provide some numerical results and discuss the effectiveness of quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees based on the statistical bound and the inf.uence of UBR streams on the system performance.

A central problem in sensor array processing is the localization of multiple sources and the reception of the signals emitted by those sources. Many approaches have been studied for this problem when the additive noise in the sensor array data is modeled with a Gaussian distribution. However, the schemes designed for Gaussian noise typically perform very poorly when the noise is non-Gaussian. An algorithm is presented for array processing in non-Gaussian noise. The algorithm is based on modeling the noise with a Gaussian mixture distribution. The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is then used to derive an iterative processing structure that estimates the source locations, estimates the source waveforms, and adapts the processing to match the characteristics of the noise. Simulation examples are presented to illustrate the performance of the algorithm.

This paper focuses on two perspectives. First, there are many multimedia presentation systems that do not provide dynamic presentations. In order to improve the drawback, we allow dynamic presentations in our multimedia presentation system. We introduce the concept of data flow and control flow diagram for multimedia presentations have been broadly used in the structured analysis/design of software systems in recent years. Graphical control flow permits the stepwise refinement of the software specifications toward a detailed design and implementation. We introduce some additional graphical components in our multimedia DFD/CFD. It also allows the presentation to change itself. Thus, this dynamic multimedia presentation can let users (audiences) to learn and act according to their individual background. So, a presentation designer may analyze and design a presentation in a systematic way. In order to let our multimedia presentation system also deal with the problem of synchronization, our design tool also uses timed Petri Net.

The distributed object oriented computing model is the next logical step to develop distributed applications. In recent years, several object models have been proposed, such as COM/DCOM, CORBA, and JAVA Bean etc. In CORBA, which was announced by OMG, object request broker is a software bus to connect applications and object components. In addition, multi threaded programming is a well known technique to improve the performance of applications. In a CORBA environment, clients can invoke the remote objects that are shared. If those objects are single threaded it will affect system performance in large distributed applications. We describe in detail the design and implementation of multi threaded object request broker based on CORBA. Our ORB was implemented atop Windows NT and underlying TCP protocol. Finally, we compare our system's performance with IONA's Orbix, which is a well known commercial product, in both one-way and two-way request.

Compressed video is well known to be self-similar in nature. We model VBR carrying long-range dependent, multiplexed MPEG-2 video sources traffic. The actual traffic for the model is generated using fast-Fourier transform of the fractional Gaussian noise sequence. Our model of compressed video sources bears similarity to an MPEG-2 transport stream carrying video, i.e., it is long-range dependent and generates traffic in a piecewise constant bit rate manner. We study, the effect of such VBR traffic on ABR carrying TCP traffic. The effect of such VBR traffic is that the ABR capacity is highly variant. We find that a switch algorithm like ERICA+ can tolerate this variance in ABR capacity while maintaining high throughput and low delay. We present simulation results for terrestrial and satellite configurations.
