The assessment of modeling skills is a topic that has hardly been discussed in literature. Being able to assess a modeler's skill level, however, provides valuable input for planning further educational interventions or allows for upfront estimations of capabilities to successfully perform a real-world modeling task. Literature indicates that skill levels can be estimated based on the capability to identify mistakes in given models. We propose to use the metrics specified in the 3QM framework as a foundation for assessing technical modeling skills. Based on these metrics, we have developed testing items for assessing modeler's capabilities to recognize syntactic, semantic and pragmatic issues in models, which serve as an indicator for their modeling skill level. These items are embedded in a computerized adaptive testing platform, which uses item response theory to estimate skill levels. We introduce the testing platform and finally describe the implementation of our test system prototype, which demonstrated the technical feasibility of the chosen approach. © 2017 ACM.

Existence versus exploitation: The opacity of backdoors and backbones under a weak assumption

Backdoors and backbones of Boolean formulas are hidden structural properties. A natural goal, already in part realized, is that solver algorithms seek to obtain substan-tially better performance by exploiting these structures. However, the present paper is not intended to improve the performance of SAT solvers, but rather is a cautionary paper. In particular, the theme of this paper is that there is a potential chasm between the existence of such structures in the Boolean formula and being able to effectively exploit them. This does not mean that these structures are not useful to solvers. It does mean that one must be very careful not to assume that it is computationally easy to go from the existence of a structure to being able to get one's hands on it and/or being able to exploit the structure. For example, in this paper we show that, under the assumption that P ≠ NP, there are easily recognizable families of Boolean formulas with strong backdoors that are easy to find, yet for which it is hard (in fact, NP-complete) to determine whether the formulas are satisfiable. We also show that, also under the assumption P ≠ NP, there are easily recognizable sets of Boolean formulas for which it is hard (in fact, NP-complete) to determine whether they have a large backbone. In this article, we propose a knowledge-based taxonomic scheme of the objective image quality assessment metrics including the key concepts involved for each approach. Our classification is constructed according to six criteria based on the inf.rmation available at each stage of the design process. The novelty of the present classification scheme is that the six layers are linked via a single concept where each layer represents a single type of knowledge about: 1) the reference image, 2) the degradation type, 3) the visual perception field, 4) the human visual physiology and psychophysical mechanisms, 5) the processes of the visual inf.rmation analysis, and finally 6) knowledge about perceptual image representation and coding. The first layer helps delineate boundaries between full-reference (FR) image quality assessment metrics, that are further classified through layers 2-6, and other families (reduced-reference [RR] and no-reference [NR]). In addition, gradual degrees are considered for knowledge about specific areas related to visual quality evaluation processes. The proposed taxonomic framework is intended to be stepwise, to help sorting out the fundamental ideas behind the development of objective image quality metrics often working on the luminance channel or marginally on the RGB channels. The aim is to congregate the already published classification schemes and to methodologically expand new aspects according to which an efficient and straightforward classification of the image quality assessment algorithms becomes possible. This is significant because of the increasing number of developed metrics. Furthermore, a systematic summarization is necessary in order to facilitate the research and application of image quality techniques. © 2016 Society for Imaging science and Technology.

In this study, we introduce a big data processing framework that provides self-healing capability in the Internet of Things domain. We discuss the high-level architecture of this framework and its prototype implementation. To identify faulty conditions, we utilize a complex-event processing technique by applying a rule-based pattern-detection algorithm on the events generated real-time. For events, we use a descriptor metadata of the measurements (such as CPU usage, memory usage, bandwidth usage) taken from Internet of Things devices. To understand the usability and effectiveness of the proposed architecture, we test the prototype implementation for performance and scalability under increasing incoming message rates. The results are promising, because its processing overhead is negligible.

The Internet of Things (IoT) presents unique challenges in detecting anomaly and monitoring all connected devices in a network. Moreover, one of the objectives of anonymity in communication is to protect the data traffic of devices. The summary status visualization is indispensable to depict all devices/sensors that are most indicative of a pending failure and a predictive power/energy. Thus, this paper proposes a multi-platform monitoring and anomaly detection system that supports heterogeneous devices. The proposed system addresses the problems of: (i) how to monitor the network to prevent device failures and (ii) how to design a comprehensive feature for the early anomaly detection of IoT communication.

Currently, a multitude of studies, whitepapers and roadmaps claim to predict the future of robotics and automation. Unfortunately, all of them are to some extent limited in their scope, by design and/or are biased by some particular interests. In most cases this is not even by intention, but the fact, that the euRobotics Multiannual Roadmap and Strategic Research Agenda only focus on the European robotics community limits it to a certain field of view. The same applies for the U.S. Robotics Roadmap and other documents. In this paper, we suggest the methodology for a Delphi-Study - a guided, unbiased and holistic approach based on neutral interviews with internationally well renowned experts. The necessity for a Delphi-Study has already been laid out by the IEEE RAS Industries Activities Board in the IEEE RAM Magazine [6].

Programming languages form the interface between programmers (the users) and the computation that they desire the computer to execute. Although studies exist for some aspects of programming language design (such as conditionals), other aspects have received little or no human factors evaluations. Designers thus have little they can rely on if they want to make new languages highly usable, and users cannot easily chose a language based on usability criteria. This SIG will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in increasing the depth and breadth of studies on the usability of programming languages, and ultimately in improving the usability of future languages. © 2016 Authors.

Many computer vision problems involve data with multiple views, where each view corresponds to a certain type of feature. To integrate inf.rmation from multiple views in the unsupervised setting, multi-view clustering methods have been developed to cluster multiple views simultaneously. Most existing methods only consider the case that each example appears in all the views. However, data with partial views is often occurred in real applications. For example, several certain sensors sometimes have faults, then the data may not be captured completely, which will lead to the case that only partial views are available. In this paper, we propose a nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) method for partial multi-view clustering, which incorporates the cluster similarity and manifold preserving constraints into an unified framework. The basic idea of the proposed method, named Double Constrained NMF (DCNMF), is to push clustering solutions of different views from the same examples towards a common membership matrice, and to maintain the latent geometric structure of the views simultaneously. Moreover, we develop an efficient optimization scheme for the proposed method. Experiments on several two-view datasets demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method on partial multi-view clustering tasks.

Due to more and more on-premises services are migrating onto cloud, user behavioral analysis then gets popular as a data-driven way to administer lots accounts of on-cloud services. This paper proposes a novel rule-based approach, GMiner, for mining different types of Google cloud drive usages as an unsupervised account-management approach. Experiment results show that GMiner provides accurate, inter-pretable, and visualized clustering results which are helpful for highlighting inactive, quasi-insider accounts, or other potential cyber-security risks from real-environment dataset.
