Reproducibility of computational studies is a hallmark of scientific methodology. It enables researchers to build with confidence on the methods and findings of others, reuse and extend computational pipelines, and thereby drive scientific progress. Since many experimental studies rely on computational analyses, biologists need guidance on how to set up and document reproducible data analyses or simulations. In this paper, we address several questions about reproducibility. For example, what are the technical and non-technical barriers to reproducible computational studies? What opportunities and challenges do computational notebooks offer to overcome some of these barriers? What tools are available and how can they be used effectively? We have developed a set of rules to serve as a guide to scientists with a specific focus on computational notebook systems, such as Jupyter Notebooks, which have become a tool of choice for many applications. Notebooks combine detailed workflows with narrative text and visualization of results. Combined with software repositories and open source licensing, notebooks are powerful tools for transparent, collaborative, reproducible, and reusable data analyses. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. This paper proposes an architecture for tactile-based fabric learning and classification. The architecture is based on a number of SVM-based learning units, which we call fabric classification cores, specifically trained to discriminate between two fabrics. Each core is based on a specific subset of the fully available set of features, on the basis of their discriminative value, determined using the p-value. During fabric recognition, each core casts a vote. The architecture collects votes and provides an overall classification result. We tested seventeen different fabrics, and the result showed that classification errors are negligible.

This paper introduces the problem of detection of landmines and unexploded ordnances. This is a serious humanitarian problem affecting dozens of countries across the world. A solution using robots for cleaning affected areas would have a huge positive impact for the life of persons living there and has for long been foreseen, but this approach has its own difficulties. The paper presents a Challenge aiming to engage researchers across the world into this problem and helping to improve robotics demining. The different phases of the Humanitarian robotics and Automation Technology Challenge (HRATC) are described and the progresses achieved after three years of running the Challenge are analyzed and discussed.

A miniaturized wind turbine cluster intended for educational purposes is used to build a 4×4 model wind turbine farm. This deployment is part of an exercise to model and optimize the output energy associated with the farm. An empirical approach is used to estimate the power and the power coefficient curves from data acquired in the field. An extrapolated power and power factor model is developed for further estimation of the power output of the wind turbines and the efficiency of the turbines at different wind speeds. The proposed approach is simple and requires minimal cost as opposed to other approaches based on wind tunnel measurements. Field experiments are carried out in this regard and the downwind distance and pitch angle are changed in field testing in terms of an experimental parameter study. The work emphasizes the potential of using small-scale models to understand and investigate interaction of wind turbines in a cluster.

In this paper, the optimization of a microgrid operating in a "urban district-like" environment is considered, combining both the optimal scheduling of the microgrid sources and demand response strategies, implemented in the district buildings. In particular, the overall system is optimized in order to schedule generation plants, storage systems, electrical vehicles, deferrable and variable loads with the minimum daily operating costs, taking also into account network constraints. Binary and auxiliary variables have been used to reduce the nonlinearity of the model. Moreover, a technique based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) is proposed to minimize uncertainties coming from renewable resources and to reduce the complexity of the overall decision problem solution. The proposed approach has been developed exploiting, as a reference and practical test-case, the Savona Campus of the Genoa University, where the research infrastructure Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM) is in operation;day-ahead optimization results have been compared with those of the proposed MPC approach.

Optimal control of coastal aquifer pumping towards the sustainability of water supply and salinity

Saltwater intrusion and upconing phenomena affect coastal aquifers worldwide. These phenomena can be partially mitigated by an adequate management of the aquifer. In this work, the optimal pumping schedule for one coastal well has been defined by a decision model that minimizes desalination and pumping costs, while taking into account the aquifer salinity levels near the well. The dynamics of the aquifer is described in terms of two state equations related to salinity concentration in the pumped water and cumulative pumped water up to a specific instant. A case study is presented with application to a well in Hawaii islands. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

This paper describes an approach for designing, formalizing and implementing sentinels that detect errors in fail-uncontrolled multiagent systems, and controllers that identify particular situations in ambient intelligence (AmI) systems. The formalism we use for representing the expected patterns of actions along with exceptions, timeouts, and their handlers, is that of constrained global types extended with features for dealing with these new constructs. We provide the syntax and semantics of the extended constrained global types and examples of their use, in the different contexts of fail-uncontrolled and AmI systems.
