Reliable distance estimation of objects in a visual scene is essential for any artificial vision system designed to serve as the main sensing unit on robotic platforms. This paper describes a vision-centric framework for a mobile robot which makes use of bio-inspired techniques to solve visual tasks, in particular to estimate disparity. Such framework features robustness to noise, high speed in data processing, good performance in 3D reconstruction, the possibility to orientate the cameras independently and it requires no explicit estimation of the extrinsic parameters of the cameras. These features permit navigation with obstacle avoidance allowing active exploration of the scene. Furthermore, the modular design allows the integration of new modules with more advanced functionalities.

In the paper a traffic control strategy based on ramp metering is proposed in order to reduce traffic emissions in freeway stretches. Such strategy is devised to take into account that two vehicle classes are present in the freeway (cars and trucks) and that they are separately controlled. The simulation analysis developed in the paper shows, first of all, that the proposed control strategy is able not only to reduce traffic emissions in the freeway but also to reduce the congestion, by decreasing the total time spent by vehicles in the system. Moreover, the effectiveness of the two-class ramp metering control is shown on different traffic scenarios, that are deeply analysed and discussed in the paper.

In this study, an in vitro cortical culture was stimulated according to the activity exhibited by its in silico counterpart. We connected the latter, an artificial spiking neural network (SNN), to the former, a biological network (BNN), via an open-loop (i.e. unidirectional) configuration, with the ultimate goal of establishing a closed-loop bidirectional connection in future studies. We detected network bursts in the SNN and utilized them as triggers for stimulus delivery to the BNN. We analyzed evoked BNN responses to evaluate whether the BNN activity was entrained by the SNN by correlating stimuli and BNN evoked network burst rates at different timescales. We found that this correlation was nearly constant at all timescales, but its magnitude depended on the efficacy of the stimulation source in entraining BNN activity.

This ongoing study investigates the neural correlates of ankle dorsi-plantar flexion in active, passive, and proprioceptive tasks. Specifically, we investigated two proprioceptive matching tasks that required a simple combination of active and passive ankle movements: (1) a memory-based ipsilateral matching task and (2) a contralateral concurrent matching task. As expected, during the passive tasks, subjects recruited the same brain areas involved in the correspondent active movements (primary motor cortex (Ml), premotor cortex (PM) supplementary motor cortex (SMA) and primary somatosensory cortex (S1)), but the activations were lower. Instead, in both the proprioceptive matching tasks, subjects recruited more motor and sensory-motor areas of the brain and the activations were greater.
