In this study, as the first stage in the development of a non-implantable hearing aid, a new electromagnetic transducer composed of three coils and a magnet was made which generates high-excitation force to vibrate ossicles via the tympanic membrane. To evaluate the excitation force of the electromagnetic transducer, cochlear microphonic (CM) was measured in anesthetized guinea pigs. The non-implantable electromagnetic hearing aid consists of two parts, i.e., an electromagnetic transducer and an amplifier. Results show that over the entire frequency, CM amplitude caused by the electromagnetic transducer is larger than that caused by acoustical stimulus. Because of the linear relationship between the acoustical stimulus level and the CM amplitude, the value of the excitation force caused by the electromagnetic transducer can be converted to the equivalent value in dB SPL. The excitation force generated by the prototype of electromagnetic transducer is 93-106 dB SPL in the frequency range of 0.5 to 10 kHz. This study showed that the electromagnetic transducer is able to generate sufficient excitation force to treat patients with high-frequency hearing loss.

It is generally considered that human behavior includes both regularities and habits. In this paper, the regularities and habits of behavior are called the behavioral pattern, and we wish to learn and recognize them. The conventional approaches considered behavioral patterns but used only infrared sensors or information about whether electrical appliances were on or off. Thus, it was difficult to recognize in detail how a person was performing motions in the room. In order to realize a procedure for the detailed recognition of motion in ordinary environments, on the other hand, a large number of models must be prepared beforehand. To deal with this problem, this paper proposes the following technique. Motions conducted in the learning period are automatically classified and individual models are constructed. Then, motions can be recognized in detail without preparing a large number of models, and behavioral patterns can be recognized by considering the sequence of motions. In experiments, human motions and behavioral patterns in an indoor environment were learned and recognized, and the effectiveness of the method was demonstrated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The outdoor service robot which we call OSR-01 is presently under development intending for cleaning up urban areas by means of collecting discarded trash such as PET bottles, cans, plastic bags and so on. We, in this paper, describe the architecture of OSR-01 consisting of hardwares such as sensors, a manipulator, driving wheels, etc. for searching for and picking up trash, and softwares such as fast pattern matching for identifying various trash and distance measurement for picking up via the manipulator. After describing the vision system in detail, which is one of the most critical parts of the trash collection task, we show the result of an open experiment in which OSR-01 collects plastic PET bottles on a real shopping street in the special zone for robot research and development in Kitakyushucity.

In order to detect and track the small magnet embedded in the vicinity of a target tumor during surgical operation, a magnetic navigation system based on the three-dimensional measurement with micro-fluxgate magnetic sensors was developed. In this paper, we present an image overlay method for superimposing the magnet marker, which is localized by the magnetic navigation system, on the 2D endoscopic view. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system and its applicability in clinical use, we set up an in vivo experiment, in which the surgeons used the system to perform a thoracoscopic surgery on a pig. As a result, the surgeons could operate the partial resection of the target area, which corresponded to the tumor lesions, of the pig lung easily and safely under the guidance of the magnetic navigation system. © 2004, Elsevier Science B.V. In order to detect and track the small magnet embedded in the vicinity of a target during surgical operation, a magnetic navigation system based on the three-dimensional measurement with micro-fluxgate magnetic sensors was developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the target registration error in the magnetic navigation system. First of all, 196 grid points around the magnetic sensors were selected as the sample measurement points for accuracy evaluation and the 2×2×10 mm-sized small magnet was placed precisely at each sample point, then the three-dimensional position of the target was measured using the magnetic navigation system. As a result, the measurement accuracy of the current prototype system was found to be about 10 mm or less. © 2003, Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
