Data Augmentation (DA) is an effective strategy to increase model generalisation. In Natural Language Processing (NLP), DA remains in its early stages, primarily due to the inherent sensitivity of textual data, which complicates the augmentation process. These complexities are further increased in multilingual contexts, as DA techniques effective in one language may not yield comparable results in others. As a result, manually identifying optimal DA techniques that preserve semantic integrity and are language agnostic remains a significant challenge. It emphasises the necessity for automating the text DA process with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which offers a promising approach by calculating word importance scores to effectively guide the augmentation. In this paper, a comprehensive review of existing approaches in auto-text DA is presented, beginning with an exploration of the concept of auto-text DA, followed by a discussion on its cross-lingual applications, and concluding with the integration of XAI for semantic preservation. The paper highlights the critical need for further research to enhance the effectiveness and applicability of XAI in auto-text DA, enabling its use across diverse languages.

The current paper proposes a new approach for peripheral speech emotion analysis and gender estimation incorporating the best machine learning architectures such as CNNs and LSTMs. Its correct depiction of emotions and the variation of the gendered speech to indicate manifold signal-to-noise ratio make the approach accommodate the difficulty inherent in recognizing emotions from the recording of voices as well as predicting the gender of a speaker. It is then able to ally with preprocessing and collection of a vast range of different speech samples, feature extraction of pitch, tone and spectral data. These features serve as input to the CNNs and LSTMs: LSTMs work well at temporal regular features and the CNNs work well in feature extraction by location (spatio feature). The approach is tested on the RAVDESS and IEMOCAP datasets and establishes a near perfect match to prior approaches with reference to recognition accuracy of emotion analysis and gender prediction. Thus, applying the identified dual method approach, which could be described by such characteristics as highly accurate data pre-preprocessing, clear indication of the features of interest, a different CNN-LSTM model joint training, it offers a reasonably good platform to gain certain insights into such characteristics of the speech as our experiment demonstrates. This work offers satisfactory configurations on concerns such as human computer relation, customer relation and mental health surveillance to suggest that other applications could be achieved in future.

In recent years, a new strain of malware, known as mining malware, has emerged, resulting in significant losses for its victims due to its encryption techniques. This research proposes an innovative approach to detect mining malware by integrating hierarchical threat intelligence features, focusing on the static attributes of mining malware. From the perspective of mining malware threat intelligence, we train classifiers using distinct layers of features, including byte-level features, Portable Executable (PE) structure features, and mining operation execution features. By leveraging diverse malicious software attributes for detection preferences, we develop a comprehensive mining malware detector based on a hierarchical feature integration methodology. To evaluate our approach, we conducted experiments in both controlled lab settings and real-world datasets. The results indicate that our hierarchical feature-integrated mining malware detection method achieves an impressive accuracy rate of 97.01% on the simulated real-world dataset, demonstrating a substantial 6.13% accuracy improvement compared to the baseline mining malware detection method. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Approximation Polynomial-Time Algorithms for Consistency-Aware Multi-Server Network Design in Delay-Sensitive Applications

This paper proposes two polynomial-time approximation algorithms for allocating servers to design a consistency-aware multi-server network for delay-sensitive applications. Each algorithm selects servers and determines the main-secondary server pairs to minimize the total delay. Previous work has not provided any polynomial-time algorithm. The proposed algorithms are theoretically guaranteed to output an approximate value within three times the optimal value. Numerical results show that the more computationally efficient of the two algorithms is 46.4 to 5.26 × 104 times faster than an integer linear programming technique, while the maximum delay is, on average, merely 1.0196 times the optimal value. © 2019 IEEE.

The upcoming IEEE 802.11be standard, termed WiFi 7, introduces multi-link operation (MLO), enabling devices to establish multiple simultaneous connections utilizing different frequencies and channels. While MLO has the potential to boost network throughput, optimizing channel allocation in WiFi 7 networks introduces many challenges. In this paper, we propose a best-arm identification-enabled Monte Carlo tree search (BAI-MCTS) algorithm for efficient channel allocation in WiFi 7 networks. Specifically, we first employ an efficient mechanism to calculate the network throughput by capturing the essential features of the CSMA protocol. We then formulate this channel allocation problem as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem. However, solving this MAB problem induces high sample complexity due to the large-arm space. To overcome this challenge, we introduce BAI-MCTS by combining the BAI and MCTS techniques. Notably, BAI-MCTS has a fast convergence rate and low sample complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the baseline algorithms in terms of the convergence rate, which is about 42.40% faster than the UCT algorithm when reaching 95% of the optimal value.

Improving protein–protein interaction modulator predictions via knowledge-fused language models

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play key roles in numerous biological processes and their dysregulation can lead to various human diseases. Modulating these interactions with small molecule PPI modulators has emerged as a promising strategy for treating such diseases. However, current computational approaches for screening PPI modulators often fail to integrate biomolecular expertise and lack the elucidation of interaction mechanisms. Here, we propose a knowledge-fused modulator-PPI interaction prediction method (KFPPIMI) to alleviate these issues. KFPPIMI constructs separate representation models for modulators and proteins, each of which integrates external knowledge from textual and graph-based data sources via a language modeling framework. The fusion of the nuanced expression of natural language with the structural attributes of biomolecules provides KFPPIMI with a holistic view of modulator-PPI interactions. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of KFPPIMI and its individual components. The results show that KFPPIMI outperforms existing methods in different scenarios. Moreover, the modulator and protein representation model can be successfully applied to their respective downstream tasks with comparable performance. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Cost Optimization for Serverless Edge Computing with Budget Constraints using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Serverless computing adopts a pay-as-you-go billing model where applications are executed in stateless and short-lived containers triggered by events, resulting in a reduction of monetary costs and resource utilization. However, existing platforms do not provide an upper bound for the billing model which makes the overall cost unpredictable, precluding many organizations from managing their budgets. Due to the diverse ranges of serverless functions and the heterogeneous capacity of edge devices, it is challenging to receive near-optimal solutions for deployment cost in a polynomial time. In this paper, we investigated the function scheduling problem with a budget constraint for serverless computing in wireless networks. Users and IoT devices are sending requests to edge nodes, improving the latency perceived by users. We propose two online scheduling algorithms based on reinforcement learning, incorporating several important characteristics of serverless functions. Via extensive simulations, we justify the superiority of the proposed algorithm by comparing with an ILP solver (Midaco). Our results indicate that the proposed algorithms efficiently approximate the results of Midaco within a factor of 1.03 while our decision-making time is 5 orders of magnitude less than that of Midaco. © 2025, CC BY.

There are several situations where it would be convenient if a quantity of interest essential to support a medical or regulatory decision could be predicted as a function of other measurable quantities rather than measured experimentally. To do so, we need to ensure that in all practical cases, the predicted value does not differ from what we would measure experimentally by more than an acceptable threshold, defined by the context in which that quantity of interest is used in the decision-making process. This is called Credibility Assessment. Initial work, which guided the elaboration of the first technical standard on the topic (ASME VV-40:2018), focused on predictive models built from available mechanistic knowledge of the phenomenon of interest. For this class of predictive models, sometimes called biophysical models, a credibility assessment practice based on the so-called verification, Validation, Uncertainty, Quantification and Applicability (VVUQA) analysis is accepted. Through theoretical considerations, this position paper aims to summarise a complex debate on whether such an approach can be extended to predictive models built without any mechanistic knowledge (machine learning (ML) predictors). We conclude that the VVUQA can be extended to ML-based predictors;however, since there is no certainty that the features used to predict the quantity of interest are necessary and sufficient, according to the VVUQA framework, such credibility assessment is limited to the test sets used for the validation studies. This calls for a Total Product Life Cycle approach, where periodic retesting of ML-based predictors is part of post-marketing surveillance to ensure that no "unknown bias"may play a role. © 2013 IEEE.

Our research demonstrates a discrete speech system that empowers those afflicted with speech impairments to convey ideas by internally articulating words without producing audible sound. This method harnesses the minimal movements involved in articulation, making it less arduous than conventional vocalization, especially for individuals facing communication challenges. Silent Speech Interfaces (SSIs) form the foundation of our research, enabling the decoding of neuromuscular signals associated with internal speech articulation to facilitate non-invasive and effective communication for individuals with speech impairments. This research entails the utilization of a multi-electrode configuration to capture subtle, low-voltage electrical signals positioned on the surface area of the subject’s neck. These signals emerge as a consequence of neural activation within the speech articulator muscles, signifying the internal articulation of words within the oral cavity, accompanied by minimal physical movement. Subsequent to signal acquisition, a comprehensive analysis of the data is conducted using a biosensing board (Cyton), facilitated by the implementation of the OpenBCI GUI interface and visualization via Python plotting tools.

Network virtualization (NV) allows service providers (SPs) to instantiate logically isolated entities called virtual networks (VNs) on top of a substrate network (SN). Though VNs bring about multiple benefits, particularly in terms of economic costs and elasticity, they also force various technical challenges to be addressed. The primary one is the issue of optimally allocating resources to VNs, also termed virtual network embedding (VNE). This paper presents an exhaustive survey of VNE by extensively covering the state-of-the-art research field in this very active field and focusing on the emerging research trends in industry and academia over the last decade. In addition, this survey originally contributes to the literature by proposing a novel taxonomy for existing VNE solutions and providing a thorough comparative study of their strategies. © 1998-2012 IEEE.
