To overcome Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), which can cause hyperglycemia due to diminished insulin secretion of β-cell function, islet transplantation has been developed with various strategies including pseudo-islet. However, conventional pseudo-islet formation techniques combining with other cells depend on natural cellular aggregation, which requires at least 5 days to form and even show segregation of distinct cell types, leading to diminished cell viability and function. Herein, we applied a subaqueous free-standing 3D cell culture (FS) device, which can reduce the spheroid formation time by trapped cell in nodes of acoustic standing wave. Briefly, Culturing with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) to form heterotypic pseudo-islet (Hislet) in FS device dramatically reduced formation time less than one day. Hislet demonstrated enhancement of cell viability than conventional pseudo-islet formation method. Additionally, ADSCs combined Hislet proved strong secretion of various paracrine factors. Also results showed significantly increased angiogenesis effect and immunomodulation effect for various type of immune cells in Hislet compared to islet, which can enhance transplantation survival. Furthermore, Hislet validated glucose-regulating capacity and enhanced angiogenesis effect in vivo T1DM model. Throughout this study, we propose a novel strategy for forming Hislet that can overcome the limitations of conventional Islet and pseudo-islet for T1DM. © 2025 The Authors

This paper concentrates on the examination of a class of nonlocal initial value problems for Langevin fractional differential equations featuring the ψ-Caputo fractional derivative within Banach spaces. By utilizing Banach’s fixed-point theorem, we establish the uniqueness of the solutions to these problems. The existence of solutions is then confirmed using Schaefer’s and Darbo’s fixed-point theorems. Bounded and Uniform Energy-based Out-of-distribution Detection for Graphs

Given the critical role of graphs in real-world applications and their high-security requirements, improving the ability of graph neural networks (GNNs) to detect out-of-distribution (OOD) data is an urgent research problem. The recent work GNNSAFE (Wu et al., 2023) proposes a framework based on the aggregation of negative energy scores that significantly improves the performance of GNNs to detect node-level OOD data. However, our study finds that score aggregation among nodes is susceptible to extreme values due to the unboundedness of the negative energy scores and logit shifts, which severely limits the accuracy of GNNs in detecting node-level OOD data. In this paper, we propose NODESAFE: reducing the generation of extreme scores of nodes by adding two optimization terms that make the negative energy scores bounded and mitigate the logit shift. Experimental results show that our approach dramatically improves the ability of GNNs to detect OOD data at the node level, e.g., in detecting OOD data induced by Structure Manipulation, the metric of FPR95 (lower is better) in scenarios without (with) OOD data exposure are reduced from the current SOTA by 28.4% (22.7%). Adaptive iterated local search algorithm for dynamic patient admission scheduling problems

Healthcare resource management is essential for ensuring the quality of patient care. However, it can be a complex and costly task. This work addresses the patient admission scheduling (PAS) problem, a complex aspect of healthcare resource management. PAS aims to allocate patients to hospital beds within a planning horizon, subject to a variety of healthcare constraints. The goal is to maximize management efficiency and patient comfort to improve medical treatment. In this work, we consider a practical variant of PAS known as dynamic PAS (DPAS). DPAS considers several factors and constraints, such as the daily registration of new patients, urgent patients, uncertainties in stay lengths, operating theatre resources, and the surgery scheduling process. An effective and efficient adaptive iterated local search (AILS) algorithm is proposed to solve DPAS. To enable the search to explore the search space efficiently, the proposed AILS adaptively integrates a number of components. Two adaptive perturbation strategies are devised to locate unexplored areas in the search space. To exploit the newly discovered areas effectively, we propose an adaptive local search mechanism as an intensification strategy to find a high-quality solution. The proposed AILS algorithm is compared to benchmark problems used by existing algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach. Learning-Enhanced Riemannian Gradient Descent Method for Transmit-Receive Joint Design Towards ISRJ Suppression

The interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) can create false targets that obscure real targets, leading to radar target detection failures. This study investigates the ISRJ countermeasure in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar through transmit-receive joint design. We model the transmit-receive design problem as a jointly constrained optimization problem, aiming to minimize the waveform sidelobes, ISRJ energy, and mutual interference among various waveform-filter pairs. To address the difficulties posed by non-convex constraints, we transform the original constrained problem in Euclidean space into an unconstrained one in Riemannian manifold space. To simultaneously and adaptively update the transmit waveforms and receive filters, we propose a learning-enhanced Riemannian gradient descent (LE-RGD) method, which unfolds the classical Riemannian gradient descent (RGD) method into layers of a neural network. The LE-RGD algorithm directly optimizes transmit waveforms and receive filters through implicit gradient descent iterations, where the optimization strategy is dynamically and adaptively determined by a parameterized network at each iteration. Furthermore, the LE-RGD network is randomly initialized at each problem instance and updated iteratively, facilitating its application in diverse jamming environments without the need for labeled training data. Numerical experiments conclusively show that the LE-RGD method can effectively design transmit waveforms and receive filters with high performance in terms of pulse compression and ISRJ suppression. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

Performance and emissions of gas turbine engines fueled with karanja oil-based biofuel blends: a machine learning approach using Lasso regression

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of gas turbine engines operating on biofuel blends derived from karanja oil as a potential alternative to conventional Jet-A fuel. Design/methodology/approach: The study tested three biofuel blends: JA20 (20% karanja oil, 80% Jet-A), JA30 (30% karanja oil, 70% Jet-A) and JA40 (40% karanja oil, 60% diesel). Engine performance parameters, including thrust output, thrust-specific fuel consumption (TSFC) and turbine inlet temperature (TIT), were measured at engine speeds ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 rpm. Exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were analyzed using a gas analyzer. Additionally, a Lasso regression model was used to predict micro gas turbine (MGT) performance and emissions based on experimental data. Findings: Increasing the karanja oil content in the fuel blends reduced overall thrust output, increased TSFC and lowered TIT compared to Jet-A fuel. The JA40 blend exhibited the most significant performance reduction, with a 20% decrease in thrust output, a 7.5% increase in TSFC and a 4.1% decrease in TIT. However, biofuel blends consistently resulted in lower CO, CO2 and NOx emissions compared to Jet-A fuel, with reductions of up to 36%, 6.9% and 13.6%, respectively, for the JA40 blend. The Lasso regression model effectively captured the influence of engine speed and fuel blend composition on emissions, achieving an R² of 0.95 for CO2 and 0.94 for CO predictions. Originality/value: This study provides insights into the feasibility of using karanja oil-based biofuels in gas turbine engines, demonstrating their potential to reduce emissions while highlighting tradeoffs in performance. The use of a Lasso regression model for predicting emissions offers a novel approach to assessing biofuel performance in MGTs. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.

TlBa2Ca2Cu3DyxO8+δ superconductor samples (x = 0–0.075) were prepared by a two-step solid-state reaction technique to investigate the impact of Dy2O3 (dysprosium sesquioxide) addition on the formation and the transport properties of the Tl-1223 phase. The samples were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction, ac susceptibility, and high-harmonics temperature dependence to study the effects of Dy2O3 on phase formation, superconducting transition temperature Tc, and the intergrain critical current density Jc. XRD results revealed that the prepared samples are nearly single-phases Tl-1223 with a tetragonal structure. Tc is not suppressed as Dy content increased, while Jc increased up to x = 0.025, then decreased with a further increase in x. Our findings show that the presence of dysprosium sesquioxide promotes the high-Tc phase and enhances the transport critical current densities. © I. R. Metskhvarishvili, Melita Menelaou, T. E. Modeling the Electricity Generation Processes of a Combined Solar and Small Hydropower Plant

This article proposes the concept of an integrated system consisting of two components: a small hydropower plant (SHPP) and a solar power plant (SPP), where the SHPP operates as a pumped-storage hydropower plant, and the SPP supplies energy for lifting water to the upper reservoir. A methodology is proposed for evaluating the joint operation of a solar power plant and a small hydropower plant. The methodology is based on modeling the electricity generation processes of combined solar and small hydropower plants. Additionally, a novel hybrid method is proposed for identifying interval models of small hydropower plants (SHPPs) and solar power plants (SPPs). This method integrates a metaheuristic algorithm for model structure synthesis, inspired by the behavioral model of a bee colony, with gradient-based methods for parameter identification. Using the proposed method, interval models have been developed for both small hydropower plants and the electricity generation of solar power plants. This study confirms the feasibility of using interval models to describe the relationship between electricity generation in a small hydropower plant and factors such as head difference, reactive power, and water level in the reservoir (i.e., available water resources). Furthermore, a mathematical model in the form of a difference equation is used to describe the daily electricity generation of a solar power plant. This model accounts for the characteristics of compressors that pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir. Based on the developed models, an assessment is conducted on the efficiency of the pumped-storage SHPP in ensuring operational stability during peak loads in the power grid and addressing seasonal variations. © 2025 by the authors.

GMOCSO: Multi-objective Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm based on a Grid System

This paper presents a multi-objective version of the Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm called the Grid-based Multiobjective Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm (GMOCSO). Convergence and diversity preservation are the two main goals pursued by modern multi-objective algorithms to yield robust results. To achieve these goals, we first replace the roulette wheel method of the original CSO algorithm with a greedy method. Then, two key concepts from Pareto Archived Evolution Strategy Algorithm (PAES) are adopted: the grid system and double archive strategy. Several test functions and a real-world scenario called the Pressure vessel design problem are used to evaluate the proposed algorithm's performance. In the experiment, the proposed algorithm is compared with other well-known algorithms using different metrics such as Reversed Generational Distance, Spacing metric, and Spread metric. The optimization results show the robustness of the proposed algorithm, and the results are further confirmed using statistical methods and graphs.
