The escalating visibility of secure direct object reference (IDOR) vulnerabilities in API security, as indicated in the compilation of OWASP Top 10 API Security Risks, highlights a noteworthy peril to sensitive data. This study explores IDOR vulnerabilities found within Android APIs, intending to clarify their inception while evaluating their implications for application security. This study combined the qualitative and quantitative approaches. Insights were obtained from an actual penetration test on an Android app into the primary reasons for IDOR vulnerabilities, underscoring insufficient input validation and weak authorization methods. We stress the frequent occurrence of IDOR vulnerabilities in the OWASP Top 10 API vulnerability list, highlighting the necessity to prioritize them in security evaluations. There are mitigation recommendations available for developers, which recognize its limitations involving a possibly small and homogeneous selection of tested Android applications, the testing environment that could cause some inaccuracies, and the impact of time constraints. Additionally, the study noted insufficient threat modeling and root cause analysis, affecting its generalizability and real-world relevance. However, comprehending and controlling IDOR dangers can enhance Android API security, protect user data, and bolster application resilience. © 2023 IEEE.

Design of Restricted Normalizing Flow towards Arbitrary Stochastic Policy with Computational Efficiency

This paper proposes a new design method for a stochastic control policy using a normalizing flow (NF). In reinforcement learning (RL), the policy is usually modeled as a distribution model with trainable parameters. When this parameterization has less expressiveness, it would fail to acquiring the optimal policy. A mixture model has capability of a universal approximation, but it with too much redundancy increases the computational cost, which can become a bottleneck when considering the use of real-time robot control. As another approach, NF, which is with additional parameters for invertible transformation from a simple stochastic model as a base, is expected to exert high expressiveness and lower computational cost. However, NF cannot compute its mean analytically due to complexity of the invertible transformation, and it lacks reliability because it retains stochastic behaviors after deployment for robot controller. This paper therefore designs a restricted NF (RNF) that achieves an analytic mean by appropriately restricting the invertible transformation. In addition, the expressiveness impaired by this restriction is regained using bimodal student-t distribution as its base, so-called Bit-RNF. In RL benchmarks, Bit-RNF policy outperformed the previous models. Finally, a real robot experiment demonstrated the applicability of Bit-RNF policy to real world. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. A hybrid deep learning-based approach for rolling bearing fault prognostics

Predictive Maintenance (PdM) has the potential to revolutionize the industry by providing advanced techniques to assess the condition of an industrial system and yield key information that can help optimize maintenance planning and prevent unexpected faults and breakdowns. Nevertheless, PdM is far from being universally applied and it is still the subject of increasing research. Thus, developing new approaches has great relevance to help PdM become a practical reality for the industry. PdM can also bring benefits in terms of sustainability, by reducing human and material resources waste, which is one of the main objectives of Circular Manufacturing initiatives. In this context, rolling bearings are one of the most studied components, as most industrial systems with rotating mechanisms contain bearings, which are prone to a number of faults caused by natural and unnatural wear. In this work, an hybrid Deep Learning (DL) approach is proposed, combining a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network to predict Remaining Useful Life (RUL) using rolling bearing vibration data preprocessed with the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). This model was trained and validated using the PRONOSTIA public dataset, which is a popular benchmark for rolling bearing prognostics. The obtained results are satisfactory, providing RUL estimates close to the true values in most test cases, proving the competitiveness of the approach and its potential.

Secure Blockchain Integration Approach for Knowledge Discovery in Industrial Internet of Things

The field of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is now being duly recognized as a revolutionary area in industrial automation. With the budding interest of knowledge discovery that helps the businesses in applying technology on a large scale, researchers are now faced with several major security concerns. Blockchain integration is one of the suggested applications of technology that could help secure the data during transmission, storage, and knowledge discovery. Moreover, by integrating smart contracts, a secure architecture could also assimilate accountability during data exchange. Thus, we propose a four-layer security architecture that isolates IIoT devices from user-oriented layers and maintains a record of all IIoT devices registered in the organization to prevent malicious devices from corrupting the database and discovery process. Further, by choosing proof of authority (PoA), we ensure the fair functioning of the Blockchain nodes. Through proxy re-encryption for clients, PoA consensus for Blockchain nodes, and Whitelist-based access control for IIoT Devices, we ensure the legitimacy of all participating nodes. We also implement a prototype using a private Ethereum network with proof of authority consensus and present the time taken for the entire exchange and the gas (ethereum currency) consumed per exchange by the contracts. Also we implemented the secure knowledge discovery to understand the significance of the developed scheme. The results show that the exchange can be implemented in an IIoT environment and work with a reasonable amount of resource consumption.

Automating the documentation, explanation, and modification of source code has been an area of intense research interest for several decades. This paper proposes a novel framework for analyzing source codes to generate natural language summaries, answer complex user queries by reasoning, and even support syntactic error checking and code conversion to other languages. The framework incorporates transformer-based models and knowledge graphs to understand the context of the code and the user’s queries. The contributions of this proposed approach represent a significant leap forward by overcoming the limitations of the most advanced ChatGPT model. Effective Image Representation using Double Colour Histogram for Content-Based Image Retrieval

Image representation is critical to the successful realisation of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems. The choice of features to represent the image affects retrieval performance. Nowadays, image databases are heterogeneous and different feature types can be used for appropriate descriptions. This paper proposes an image representation for CBIR that combines Stacked Colour Histogram (SCH) and Conventional Colour Histogram (CCH) to improve image retrieval precision. This presented technique is designed to capture the colour and texture information of the image. The colour properties of an image are represented by CCH and that of texture by SCH. The weighted similarity measure is used to estimate the proportion of similarity values in the retrieval task. The novel descriptor has been widely tested on four standard image datasets, namely Batik, Coil100, Corel10K and Outext. Batik, Coil100 and Outext are used to assess texture discrimination. Corel10K is used to assess the discrimination of heterogeneous images. Experimental results and comparisons with SCH, CMTH, MTH, TCM, CTM and NRFUCTM demonstrate that the proposed descriptor has superior retrieval performance. © 2021 Slovene Society Informatika. Stress, as a reaction to threatening situations, can raise heart rate and result in serious conditions that might cause significant damage or even be life-threatening. Traditional methods for evaluating stress, which rely on subjective self-reporting and clinical assessments, often suffer from biases and inconsistencies. Artificial intelligence models have been explored to predict stress levels more accurately. This paper investigates the application of Extreme Gradient Boosting in classifying psychological stress using the WESAD dataset, which includes parameters such as acceleration, electrocardiogram, electromyography, electrodermal activity, temperature, and respiration. The dataset was balanced and sampled to create a manageable subset for experimental. Extreme Gradient Boosting was chosen for its efficiency and scalability in handling complex datasets. The model was trained and validated, achieving a 95% accuracy in predicting stress levels. This study highlights the potential of integrating Extreme Gradient Boosting models into wearable devices for real-time stress monitoring. Future work involves optimizing the model to utilize fewer sensors without decreasing accuracy, ensuring it can be integrated into portable/wearable systems using tiny microcontrollers. © 2024 IEEE.
