Identifying different vehicle types can help manage traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion, and improve public safety. This study aims to create a classification model that can recognize vehicle types based on the sound of passing vehicles. To achieve this, a database of raw audio files containing 1763 samples from two sources was assembled. The time-domain signals were converted to a time-frequency representation using the short-time Fourier transform to generate Mel Spectrograms. Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) were also generated using the discrete cosine transform. In our experiments we compared these approaches. Since the data was imbalanced we applied online augmentation. Based on the literature review, we chose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier because it is particularly well suited for analyzing large datasets due to its automatic feature extraction, parameter sharing and sparsity. The results showed that Mel Spectrograms were more effective for audio data preprocessing in this particular use case, achieving the highest accuracy of 0.875 and the highest f1-score of 0.877 compared to MFCCs. © 2025 IEEE Computer Society. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a pivotal genetic marker influencing the efficacy of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer. Traditional MSI examination often requires additional genetic or immunohistochemical tests, whereas histology images, widely available in colorectal cancer diagnosis, offer a valuable alternative for MSI prediction. Although Transformer-based models have demonstrated promising outcomes in predicting MSI from histology images, they are hampered by traditional local attention mechanisms that struggle to capture long-range interdependencies and establish a comprehensive global receptive field. In this study, we introduce DiNAT-MSI, a novel framework for histology-based MSI prediction that incorporates the Dilated Neighborhood Attention Transformer (DiNAT). This model enhances global context recognition and substantially expands receptive fields, all without additional computational burden. Our results demonstrate that DiNAT-MSI achieves a superior patientwise AUROC compared to ResNet18 and Swin Transformer, along with commendable explainability. Our work not only illustrates a more accessible diagnostic tool for leveraging histological data but also underscores the potential of Transformerbased models with sophisticated attention designs in advancing precision medicine for colorectal cancer patients. © 2024 IEEE.

Ceramic membranes are one of the emerging separation technologies with extremely high separation factors. In this work, natural Kaolin clay collected from the western of Algeria was characterized in detail to see its feasibility in a ceramic membrane preparation. The ceramic membrane was prepared by solid-state reactive firing under the slip casting method. The aim is to favor the mullite phase, once the alumina is added a part will be dispersed in the mullite matrix to form a mullite-alumina composite. The mineralogical, morphological structure, particle size distribution, thermal stability, and chemical composition of prepared alumina oxide membrane were carried out using several techniques. They reveal the apparition of two main phases the mullite and the alumina. The kaolin provides the membrane with a well homogeneous morphology, good hydrophobicity, and thermal stability. The obtained membrane presented a mesoporous membrane character that can use successfully for ultrafiltration applications. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Industrial internet of things (IIoT) is the usage of internet of things(IoT) devices and applications for the purpose of sensing, processing andcommunicating real-time events in the industrial system to reduce the unnecessary operational cost and enhance manufacturing and other industrial-relatedprocesses to attain more profits. However, such IoT based smart industriesneed internet connectivity and interoperability which makes them susceptibleto numerous cyber-attacks due to the scarcity of computational resourcesof IoT devices and communication over insecure wireless channels. Therefore, this necessitates the design of an efficient security mechanism for IIoTenvironment. In this paper, we propose a hyperelliptic curve cryptography(HECC) based IIoT Certificateless Signcryption (IIoT-CS) scheme, with theaim of improving security while lowering computational and communicationoverhead in IIoT environment. HECC with 80-bit smaller key and parameterssizes offers similar security as elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) with 160-bitlong key and parameters sizes. We assessed the IIoT-CS scheme security byapplying formal and informal security evaluation techniques. We used Realor Random (RoR) model and the widely used automated validation of internet security protocols and applications (AVISPA) simulation tool for formalsecurity analysis and proved that the IIoT-CS scheme provides resistance tovarious attacks. Our proposed IIoT-CS scheme is relatively less expensivecompared to the current state-of-the-art in terms of computational cost andcommunication overhead. Furthermore, the IIoT-CS scheme is 31.25% and 51.31% more efficient in computational cost and communication overhead,respectively, compared to the most recent protocol.

In the evolving landscape of smart cities, optimizing energy consumption and enhancing cybersecurity in Internet of Things (IoT) networks are crucial. This study leverages LoRa (Long Range) technology, Bayesian Inference, and Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs) to advance cyber threat intelligence and energy efficiency in large-scale IoT deployments. The proposed algorithms address key challenges within LoRa networks by implementing a novel energy consumption model, kernel-based ELM fine-tuning, Bayesian parameter tuning, and data fusion. Through Bayesian Inference, our approach dynamically adjusts network parameters to optimize packet transmission and collision rates, ultimately reducing power consumption across smart city applications. The Kernel-ELM algorithm fine-tunes LoRa network applications by adapting kernel parameters to the unique demands of IoT environments. Additionally, our Anomaly Detection and Fusion Algorithm (ADFA) integrates data from multiple sources to detect potential cyber threats, enhancing network security. Experimental results validate these algorithms on various datasets, demonstrating improvements in both energy optimization and threat detection. Ultimately, this study provides actionable insights into the deployment of scalable, energy-efficient, and secure IoT networks for smart city infrastructure.

Joint System Latency and Data Freshness Optimization for Cache-enabled Mobile Crowdsensing Networks

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) networks enable large-scale data collection by leveraging the ubiquity of mobile devices. However, frequent sensing and data transmission can lead to significant resource consumption. To mitigate this issue, edge caching has been proposed as a solution for storing recently collected data. Nonetheless, this approach may compromise data freshness. In this paper, we investigate the trade-off between re-using cached task results and re-sensing tasks in cache-enabled MCS networks, aiming to minimize system latency while maintaining information freshness. To this end, we formulate a weighted delay and age of information (AoI) minimization problem, jointly optimizing sensing decisions, user selection, channel selection, task allocation, and caching strategies. The problem is a mixed-integer non-convex programming problem which is intractable. Therefore, we decompose the long-term problem into sequential one-shot sub-problems and design a framework that optimizes system latency, task sensing decision, and caching strategy subproblems. When one task is re-sensing, the one-shot problem simplifies to the system latency minimization problem, which can be solved optimally. The task sensing decision is then made by comparing the system latency and AoI. Additionally, a Bayesian update strategy is developed to manage the cached task results. Building upon this framework, we propose a lightweight and time-efficient algorithm that makes real-time decisions for the long-term optimization problem. A Contend Node-Restricted Receiver-Initiated MAC Protocol With Consecutive Packet Transmission

The medium access control (MAC) protocol plays a crucial role in wireless communications, influencing key performance metrics, such as energy consumption, delay, collision, and throughput. This paper introduces the Contend Node Restricted Joint Consecutive Packet Transmissions Receiver-Initiated (CNR-CPT-RI) protocol, specifically designed to minimize collisions and reduce energy consumption in wake-up radio-enabled wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The CNR-CPT-RI protocol is an effective communication protocol that is mainly applied with nodes in the one-hop range of the sink. Since the sink has the ability to control each node, it becomes feasible to manage the nodes in a way that effectively reduces collisions and enhances network lifetime as well as throughput. Moreover, the CNR-CPT-RI protocol can adaptively adjust the number of nodes participating in channel contention, maintaining it within an optimal range to balance reduced collisions, decreased energy consumption, and sustained high throughput. Furthermore, the winning node in channel contention employs Consecutive Packet Transmissions (CPTs) method to further diminish competition. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the number of collisions of the CNR-CPT-RI protocol is only 42.4%, 35.9%, and 32.5% of the baseline protocol when the number of nodes is 10, 20, and 30, respectively. The energy consumption of the CNR-CPT-RI protocol is reduced by 5.7%, 15%, and 22.6%, and the delay is decreased by 6.7%, 16%, and 32%, respectively, compared with that of the existing protocol. © 2017 IEEE.

AHP-Powered LLM Reasoning for Multi-Criteria Evaluation of Open-Ended Responses

Question answering (QA) tasks have been extensively studied in the field of natural language processing (NLP). Answers to open-ended questions are highly diverse and difficult to quantify, and cannot be simply evaluated as correct or incorrect, unlike close-ended questions with definitive answers. While large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong capabilities across various tasks, they exhibit relatively weaker performance in evaluating answers to open-ended questions. In this study, we propose a method that leverages LLMs and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to assess answers to open-ended questions. We utilized LLMs to generate multiple evaluation criteria for a question. Subsequently, answers were subjected to pairwise comparisons under each criterion with LLMs, and scores for each answer were calculated in the AHP. We conducted experiments on four datasets using both ChatGPT-3.5-turbo and GPT-4. Our results indicate that our approach more closely aligns with human judgment compared to the four baselines. Additionally, we explored the impact of the number of criteria, variations in models, and differences in datasets on the results. © 2024, CC BY.

This study examines the academic field of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AI-ED) by examining the publications and indexed documents in Scopus from 2010 to 2023. Consequently, we examined the publishing trends, exemplary articles, and the most engaged participants and funding institutions in the domain of AI-ED research. A bibliometric analysis was performed to examine the network of co-authorships, keywords, and citations in the domain of AIED research. The Scopus search resulted in the discovery of 10,474 published documents on AI-ED. Additionally, trends analysis indicated a significant increase of over 3,000% in publications between 2010 and 2023. Conference papers are the most often utilized document type, including 6757 publications or 64.5% of the overall amount. The ACM International Conference Proceeding Series is the primary source for published materials, accounting for 675 publications or 6.44% of the total publications on the topic. The most prolific researchers in the field of AI-ED are Breazeal, C and Chai C.S, each having published 18 documents. Additionally, the two institutions that have produced the highest number of published documents are Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the University of NC State University (NCSU). The output of the affiliations active in the topic is primarily attributed to the funders, specifically the National science Foundation, which is the leading funding institution based in the United States and has contributed to 354 publications. An analysis of keyword co-occurrence revealed 6 main study areas that cover the essential tools, theories, methodologies, and socioeconomic and financial aspects of artificial intelligence in education (AIED). Future research in the field of artificial intelligence in education will focus on employing sophisticated deep learning, machine learning, and neural network algorithms to precisely predict students' learning patterns. © 2024 IEEE.
